You can use FFmpeg on a Windows PC to send a playlist to YouTube Live, but a continuous broadcast takes more than a looping command: playlist playback, readable media, the FFmpeg process, YouTube’s ingest connection, and the PC’s power and network each need to keep working. The exact loop command depends on your FFmpeg build and playlist format, so verify it on your setup rather than relying on an untested one-size-fits-all command.
What must stay working for a 24/7 stream
A Windows-based stream is only continuous while all of these parts hold:
- Playlist: playback reaches the end and starts again in the intended order.
- Media: every file remains available and its audio and video streams can be read and encoded.
- FFmpeg: the process stays running and continues producing output.
- YouTube ingest: the publishing session remains connected or is restarted after failure.
- Windows and network: the PC stays awake and connected to the internet.
These are separate failure points. FFmpeg protocol reconnection options do not by themselves make a playlist loop, guarantee that a YouTube publishing session recovers, or relaunch an exited FFmpeg process.
Prepare Windows and FFmpeg before configuring YouTube
Choose and verify your build
FFmpeg’s official documentation covers its command-line tools, formats, protocols, encoders, filters, and demuxers, but it does not establish one version-specific Windows recipe for cycling every kind of multi-file playlist. Choose the FFmpeg build and version you intend to run, then verify the playlist method and command against it. Do not assume options or behavior from another build apply unchanged.

Check your playlist and media
Decide whether you are looping a single file or a multi-file playlist, and confirm how the chosen method behaves at the end of playback. Test the actual files in sequence. Check that each file exists at its Windows path and contains compatible streams for the output you plan to send. A missing file or incompatible audio/video stream can interrupt playback even if the playlist syntax is correct.
Before relying on the setup, test these independently: that the playlist starts over, that source files remain readable, and that FFmpeg continues running when a file ends or an error occurs. Do not call transitions gapless unless you have verified that with your chosen files and method.

Account for paths and Windows uptime
Use the paths and quoting that work with your selected Windows build, and test the exact command from the same account and launch context you plan to use continuously. Prevent the PC from sleeping, and arrange a way to notice and relaunch FFmpeg if it exits. Windows power and Task Scheduler details depend on the Windows version and setup; verify those settings on your machine rather than assuming a particular menu path or task configuration.
Set up YouTube Live ingest
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the URL as the server address and the key in the encoder’s stream-key field. The key is a credential: YouTube describes it as like your stream’s password and address. Keep it private.
- Enter both values in your FFmpeg output configuration. Use the ingest URL and key shown for that stream; do not substitute a URL or key from another broadcast.
- Test privately or with a planned test broadcast. Confirm that YouTube receives the expected video and audio, then check stream health in Live Control Room before depending on the setup.
If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the value used by FFmpeg. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and use settings your connection can sustain.

Choose output settings and test stream health
Bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate; it is not a universal value for every stream. As examples, YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations accessed in 2026 list 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of quality or connection capacity. Consult the current YouTube bitrate table for your output mode, then test it on the internet connection that will carry the stream.
- Use CBR as recommended by YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Set keyframes at 2-second intervals where your encoder configuration permits; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Match the output resolution and frame rate to the content and a bitrate the connection can sustain.
- Include movement and audio similar to the real playlist in your test, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
A successful start does not prove the connection will remain healthy overnight. Test a realistic duration and watch for dropped connection, missing audio, stalled playback, and FFmpeg errors.

Plan for disconnects, process exits, and archiving
Separate reconnecting from relaunching
FFmpeg documents HTTP input reconnection options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_streamed, and retry-delay limits. These concern protocol behavior; they are not a guarantee that a YouTube RTMP or RTMPS output session will recover, and they do not solve playlist looping. Verify the options against your actual FFmpeg build and test the failure cases you expect.
Test what happens when the internet drops, YouTube stops receiving, a source file becomes unavailable, and FFmpeg exits. Determine separately whether the process reconnects, whether it needs to be relaunched, and whether the stream must be started again in YouTube. A PC that remains powered on is not sufficient if the process has stopped or the ingest session has failed.

Do not assume one 24-hour archive
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not guarantee a complete archive of one continuous 24/7 broadcast. If archived segments matter, review YouTube’s current live-stream archive guidance and decide whether to end and restart scheduled streams; the suitable schedule depends on your channel’s needs.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Confirm that the URL and stream key are the values for the selected Live Control Room stream, and that the key has not been reset. | Copy the current values into the encoder configuration and check YouTube stream health. |
| Playback stops at the end of the list | The playlist method may not loop, or its loop behavior may differ on your FFmpeg build. | Verify the loop method against that build; do not treat network reconnection settings as a playlist loop. |
| Playback stops on one item | Check whether the file exists at the expected Windows path and whether its streams are compatible with the output. | Test the problem file by itself, correct the path or media issue, then retest the full playlist. |
| FFmpeg exits and the stream ends | Inspect FFmpeg’s error output and determine whether the process stopped because of a source, encoding, or connection error. | Fix the underlying failure and arrange monitoring and relaunch; protocol retry options alone do not restart an exited process. |
| The PC stops streaming after a period of inactivity | Check Windows sleep and power behavior, plus whether the network remains connected. | Configure and verify the PC to stay awake during the broadcast, then run a longer test. |
| The stream starts but health is poor | Compare actual output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current guidance and the capacity of the connection. | Adjust to a sustainable configuration and repeat a representative test while monitoring stream health. |
