You can run several 24/7 YouTube streams from one DigitalOcean Droplet by running a separate encoder or relay process for each feed, but there is no reliable universal stream count per Droplet. Capacity depends on whether each process simply forwards an already encoded feed or decodes and re-encodes it, plus the video settings, CPU, memory, and outbound network capacity. Build and test the exact workload you intend to leave running before relying on it.
What one Droplet can—and cannot—tell you about stream capacity
A Droplet is a Linux virtual machine. You can run one or more encoder processes on it, each sending a feed to YouTube with its own ingest destination and stream key. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a streamable digital format; its setup guidance explains how to enter the stream URL and key in encoder settings (YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; Manage live stream settings).
Do not confuse YouTube’s platform limits with the Droplet’s compute capacity. YouTube currently publishes limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key (Get started with live streaming). Those limits govern YouTube activity, not how many simultaneous encoder processes a server can sustain. DigitalOcean and YouTube do not publish a universal number of continuous encodes per Droplet.
The workload matters. Forwarding or remuxing an already encoded feed may require substantially less CPU than decoding and re-encoding separate videos, scaling them, compositing overlays, or producing different resolutions. Treat that as a workload distinction, not a guaranteed performance ratio: measure the actual processes and media you plan to run.

Plan the stream settings and total outbound bitrate
Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate for each output before selecting a server. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not promises about Droplet capacity (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
- For each stream, note its intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and target bitrate.
- Add the target bitrates to estimate the encoder traffic leaving the Droplet. For example, two feeds targeting 10 Mbps each require roughly 20 Mbps of video payload before protocol overhead and other traffic.
- Allow headroom rather than sizing right at the plan’s maximum throughput. A listed ceiling is not an assurance of sustained application throughput.
- Use the intended video, including its motion and audio, in a test. A static image is not a realistic substitute for a demanding feed.
Choose a Droplet for CPU, memory, and network—not a guessed stream count
For CPU-heavy encoding, DigitalOcean identifies video and live streaming as workloads suited to CPU-Optimized Droplets. Its documentation says shared CPU resources can vary with host contention, while dedicated CPU provides guaranteed access to the full hyper-thread. This is a reason to consider dedicated CPU when consistent CPU access matters, not a stream-count recommendation (Choosing the Right CPU Droplet Plan; Droplet Features).

Check the current plan’s public throughput limit and the transfer allowance available to your DigitalOcean team. DigitalOcean documents maximum public throughput of 2 Gbps for non-GPU Droplets generally and up to 10 Gbps for Premium CPU Droplets. These are ceilings, not expected sustained rates for your application (Droplet Limits).
Transfer costs are separate from throughput. DigitalOcean says inbound transfer is free and outbound transfer beyond the included allowance is billed at $0.01 per GiB; allowance and use are pooled at the team level. Confirm the current allowance and rate for the plan before deployment because pricing can change (Droplet Pricing).

For continuous streams, estimate egress over the billing period as well as peak concurrent bitrate. A stream sent continuously at a steady rate accumulates data transfer throughout the month; multiply the combined bitrate by operating time, convert bits to bytes, and compare the result with the team’s available transfer pool. Then monitor actual usage rather than treating the estimate as a bill guarantee.
Set up multiple YouTube streams on the Droplet
- Create each YouTube live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the events and retrieve the ingest URL and stream key for each output. Configure the corresponding encoder process with the right URL and key (Manage live stream settings).
- Protect stream keys. A key can authorize an encoder to send to your stream, so treat it like a password. Do not publish it in scripts, logs, screenshots, or shared support messages. Reset or rotate it if it is exposed.
- Configure one output per feed. Set the intended codec and video parameters, use RTMPS, CBR, and YouTube’s recommended keyframe interval, then verify each process points to the correct event and key (YouTube encoder settings).
- Select the Droplet based on the actual pipeline. Account for encoding CPU, memory used by the processes and media buffers, disk needs for local source files, and the sum of outbound bitrates. Do not map a plan size to an assumed number of streams.
- Test all streams together. Start every planned process with representative media and intended settings. Check YouTube’s stream health and the Droplet’s CPU, bandwidth, memory, and disk graphs. DigitalOcean provides Droplet performance graphs and monitoring features; use alerts where appropriate (How to Track Performance with Droplet Graphs; Monitoring Features).
- Run the test long enough to expose sustained issues. Watch for CPU saturation, memory growth, network congestion, dropped frames, and rising transfer use. Adjust the workload or plan, then repeat the test before treating the setup as ready for continuous operation.
- Plan recovery and maintenance. Decide how processes restart after a crash, how you will respond to a network interruption, and how you will handle Droplet maintenance. A single Droplet concentrates all the streams on one host; separating streams across hosts can reduce that concentration of failure risk, though it adds management and cost.
Benchmark before committing to a stream count
Use a staged test rather than starting every planned stream and assuming a clean launch proves 24/7 capacity. Start with one real feed, record resource use and YouTube stream health, then add the next feed and observe the change. Repeat until you reach the intended concurrency. Test the most demanding mix of resolution, frame rate, and processing that you expect to run.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- CPU remains busy or frames drop: determine whether the processes are re-encoding, scaling, or compositing. Reduce transformation work or move to a plan with more suitable CPU resources, then retest.
- Network approaches the plan ceiling: lower target bitrates or spread outputs across hosts. Check actual outbound throughput, not just the sum of configured values.
- Transfer allowance is being consumed faster than expected: verify stream duration and bitrate, then recalculate monthly egress and check team-level pooled usage.
- Memory or disk pressure appears: inspect process counts, buffers, and where source media is stored. Add suitable capacity or simplify the pipeline and test again.
These are operational checks, not a promise that a particular DigitalOcean plan will sustain a particular number of feeds. Size from observed load under realistic conditions.

| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong ingest URL or stream key, or a mismatched event | Recheck the event’s URL and key in Live Control Room and the encoder configuration. If the key may have leaked, reset it and update the encoder. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames | Encoder overload, unstable outbound path, or settings that do not match the tested capacity | Check YouTube stream health alongside CPU and outbound traffic graphs. Test lower bitrate or less processing and validate the revised configuration with all outputs active. |
| One feed works alone but several do not | Combined CPU or outbound demand exceeds what the tested setup can handle | Add feeds incrementally while monitoring. Reduce per-feed processing or distribute streams across Droplets if the shared host is the bottleneck. |
| Streams stop after a process or host interruption | No restart or incident-recovery plan | Configure and test process recovery, and define how you will restore service after a host or network interruption. Do not assume a single Droplet guarantees uninterrupted operation. |
| Unexpected transfer overage | Continuous outbound data exceeded the included pooled allowance | Compare actual team-level transfer use with the plan allowance and reassess bitrates, operating duration, and the number of active feeds. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a YouTube live stream rather than manage encoder processes on your own Droplet, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera-live encoder. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.

YouTube policy still applies to every channel
A stream that remains technically online is not automatically eligible for every YouTube feature or free of rights issues. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to use, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules for your channel and content. A Droplet, encoder, or cloud loop does not grant rights to music, game footage, or other material, nor does continuous playback guarantee monetization or audience reach.
