You can run a 24/7 YouTube radio station with OBS on Linux, but OBS alone cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. You need a supported graphics and display environment, an encoder configuration matched to your upload capacity, a host and network that stay available, monitoring and a recovery plan. Before relying on one continuous stream for a replay, note YouTube’s warning: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.

What you need before you start

  • A Linux computer that supports OpenGL 3.3 and runs an X11 or Wayland session. OBS warns that meeting its system requirements does not mean a computer can handle the encode you want; resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene complexity all affect load. Check OBS system requirements.
  • A reliable wired or wireless internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for your chosen bitrate, plus headroom for normal fluctuations.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. Verify eligibility before scheduling a launch; YouTube explains the requirements in its live-streaming getting-started guide.
  • Audio and video you have the necessary rights to transmit live and, if applicable, archive. OBS cannot resolve copyright or licensing problems.

Install OBS and build the radio station scene

Install OBS Studio using a supported source for your Linux distribution. Installation methods vary by distribution; OBS’s installation instructions describe available approaches. Open OBS in the graphical session you intend to use for the station.

  1. Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then check and test the actual production settings rather than assuming the wizard’s result is suitable for continuous operation.
  2. Create a scene for your station. Add the sources needed for its audio and visuals, such as a playlist player or a static station graphic. Source availability and playback behavior depend on your Linux setup; verify that the selected source continues playing as intended.
  3. Check audio routing in OBS. Play the program and watch the audio meters; listen for silence, clipping, unexpected system sounds and abrupt transitions.
  4. If you want a local backup, configure recording as well as streaming, choose a destination with sufficient free space, and confirm that the recording file grows during a test. Continuous recording can consume substantial disk space.

The OBS overview guide covers the interface and basic setup. A station scene should be simple enough for the host to render and encode continuously.

Set YouTube ingest and encoder settings

In OBS, open Settings > Stream and select YouTube if it is offered. Otherwise, enter the YouTube server URL and stream key supplied for the stream. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in screenshots, logs or public documentation. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to create a stream and obtain its connection details.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For YouTube’s standard SDR encoder workflow, its recommendations are H.264 video, CBR rate control, progressive scan, and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). It recommends AAC or MP3 audio and 128 Kbps stereo audio. Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s table for the exact resolution and frame rate you will use; its 720p at 30 fps entry recommends 2 Mbps video and lists 6 Mbps as the maximum. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that every Linux encoder exposes each option or that a particular connection can sustain the selected bitrate. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.

  • Resolution and frame rate: Choose a mode your computer can encode and your upload can sustain. An audio-led station may not benefit from a high frame rate or resolution unless its visuals require them.
  • Video bitrate: Use the recommendation for your selected mode as a starting point. Do not apply the 720p/30 figure to other resolutions or frame rates.
  • Rate control and keyframes: Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval for the standard SDR workflow; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 and 128 Kbps stereo. Check that your actual output contains the intended program audio.
  • Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Use the server option provided for your stream.

Test the whole broadcast before going public

  1. Schedule or create a private or unlisted test stream in YouTube Studio, then start streaming from OBS with the production scene and settings.
  2. Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that an incoming preview appears and that stream health is acceptable before making the stream public.
  3. Listen to the stream, not just the local source. Confirm the right audio is present, levels are clean, and the picture is stable.
  4. Let the test run long enough to reveal sustained encoding, upload or playback problems. Watch OBS for rendering or encoding overload and check the YouTube stream-health indicators.
  5. If you enabled local recording, confirm the file grows and can be played back. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend monitoring stream quality and checking the local archive.
  6. After the test, fix any issue and repeat it at the intended production settings. Start the scheduled encoder feed, verify the preview in Live Control Room, and click Go live when ready.

OBS recommends testing before the first public broadcast. A successful short test is useful, but it does not prove a host, connection or power supply will remain available indefinitely.

Keep the Linux host running and plan for failures

For unattended operation, keep the Linux graphical session OBS needs alive and prevent routine sleep or suspend. Configure OBS to launch with the station session and enable its automatic reconnect behavior. Reconnect can help with a brief network interruption, but it does not replace monitoring or recover every failure.

Arrange out-of-band monitoring and an alert path an operator will actually see. Test what happens after network loss and a host restart, including whether OBS starts, reconnects to YouTube and resumes the correct scene. Power loss, a crashed host, a failed router or an expired stream key may need human intervention. A UPS may help with some power interruptions, but it does not address network or host failures. No particular Linux service, watchdog script or uptime target is established here as a guaranteed solution.

Decide whether one 24/7 broadcast or shorter blocks fit your archive needs

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. That makes a single continuous 24/7 stream a poor choice if you need a dependable complete YouTube replay. Keep a local recording if the archive matters, and verify it is being written.

You can instead schedule shorter blocks that finish under 12 hours, giving each broadcast a chance to be archived separately. That is a scheduling choice, not a guarantee: YouTube does not promise in its guidance how a particular channel’s segmented broadcasts will appear. Read YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance before choosing.

Clear music rights for both live use and archives

YouTube’s livestream terms say the content provider represents that it has all necessary rights for live and archived content, including music rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can cause a placeholder and warning, and continued use may lead to interruption or termination. Even licensed third-party material can be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist.

Confirm that your permissions cover the territories where viewers may access the stream, live transmission, and any archive or VOD use you intend to keep. If applicable, coordinate allowlisting with the rights owner. A generic music subscription does not by itself establish that these uses are covered. See YouTube’s livestream terms and guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
OBS cannot start or behaves poorly in Linux The graphics/display environment may not meet OBS requirements, or the machine may be overloaded by the chosen encode. Confirm OpenGL 3.3 support and an X11 or Wayland session. Reduce scene complexity or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then run another sustained test. Requirements alone do not establish encode capacity.
YouTube shows no incoming preview OBS may be using the wrong server or key, the stream may not have started, or the channel may not be eligible to go live. Check Settings > Stream, carefully replace the key from YouTube Studio if needed, start the encoder, and verify channel eligibility. Keep the key private.
Stream health is poor or the picture stalls Upload capacity may be insufficient or unstable, or the computer may be struggling to encode. Check OBS load and YouTube stream health. Test at a lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate appropriate to YouTube’s table, and repeat under production conditions.
There is no audio or it sounds wrong Incorrect source or routing, a muted source, or a playback problem. Check OBS audio meters and source routing, then listen to the incoming preview and a local recording. Verify the program source continues playing.
The stream disconnects and does not return Automatic reconnect may not resolve a prolonged outage, host restart, power failure or other system-level problem. Check the host and network, confirm OBS is running and the stream key remains valid, and use the monitoring and recovery procedure you tested.
A long broadcast has no complete YouTube replay YouTube warns that broadcasts over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a verified local recording or plan shorter scheduled broadcasts if separate archives matter; neither choice guarantees a particular YouTube archive outcome.
Music triggers a warning or interruption A third-party match may be detected, including where the channel has not been allowlisted by the rights owner. Confirm the relevant live and archive rights and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting. OBS settings cannot clear rights issues.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the YouTube station to continue without keeping a Linux computer on at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. • Nothing has to stay powered on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
  • Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required.
