You can send one video file from a single FFmpeg process to two YouTube Live events by encoding it once and using FFmpeg’s tee muxer to duplicate the output. First create two events in YouTube Live Control Room and collect each event’s server URL and stream key. This setup sends the same audio and video to both events; different programs or output settings require separate input, filter, or encoding paths.

Prepare two YouTube Live events

Create or schedule both events in YouTube Live Control Room before starting FFmpeg. Each event has its own destination details; pair each stream key with the intended event and use the current server URL shown for that event. YouTube’s encoder workflow explains how to set up a stream and enter its destination details.

  1. In Live Control Room, create or schedule the first event and note its server URL and stream key.
  2. Create or schedule the second event and note its server URL and stream key separately.
  3. Keep each key secret. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, commit it to scripts, or expose it in screenshots or logs.
  4. Before going live, confirm which event is associated with each destination. A key paired with the wrong event can send the feed to the wrong broadcast.

YouTube currently allows up to 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key, with both limits enforced at the same time. Two streams are within those limits, but other active streams on the channel or either key can count too. Check YouTube’s current active-stream limits before starting.

Choose an FFmpeg output design

Use tee when both events should show the same program

FFmpeg’s Formats Documentation says, “The tee muxer can be used to write the same data to several outputs, such as files or streams.” With tee, FFmpeg can encode the selected audio and video once and write that encoded output to both destinations. The two events receive the same program, timing, and encoded settings.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Tee does not automatically select streams, so map the video and audio you want explicitly. FFmpeg’s tee muxer documentation describes this behavior and the output-specific format options.

Use separate output paths for different programs or settings

If one event needs different content, timing, resolution, frame rate, or codec settings, a single tee output is not the right design: it duplicates the same encoded data. Use separately mapped inputs, outputs, and, where necessary, filters or encode paths. Encoding separately can increase the server’s processing work; the amount depends on the media and host.

Set YouTube-compatible encoding settings

YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Its recommended bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec; use the table on the current guidance page for the exact target rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream.

  • Choose a resolution and frame rate your upload connection can sustain for both destinations.
  • Use a two-second keyframe interval where your chosen encoder settings permit it, and do not exceed four seconds.
  • Use CBR and an audio/video codec supported by YouTube’s current guidance.
  • Test with representative motion and audio, then monitor each event’s preview and stream-health indicators.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. Reveal or copy the current RTMPS server URL from Live Control Room for each event instead of relying on a remembered endpoint. See YouTube’s secure ingest guidance.

Build the FFmpeg command safely

The following is a schematic, not a ready-to-run command: actual tee syntax, escaping, muxer availability, input options, and authentication handling depend on your installed FFmpeg build and destination values. Verify it locally against your version’s command-line documentation and tee documentation. Do not paste real stream keys into a public example.

  1. Select the file and input behavior. Place input options before the input URL. For a file intended to play in real time, configure reading accordingly. If it must repeat, verify the installed build’s loop options and test a loop boundary; do not assume a loop setting will work correctly for every media file.
  2. Map the intended streams. Explicitly map the video and audio streams from the input. Tee does not choose them automatically.
  3. Choose encoding or stream copy. Encode to settings compatible with YouTube unless you have confirmed that the file’s existing codecs, bitrate, timestamps, audio layout, and keyframe spacing are suitable for stream copy. Copy mode is file-dependent, not a universal shortcut.
  4. Configure tee outputs. Use tee as the output muxer and declare the appropriate output format for each destination. Supply the two event URLs and keys through protected configuration, not hard-coded credentials in a published command.
  5. Check option placement. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output URL and reset between files. Put input options with the input and output options before the output they control; consult the installed version’s documentation.
  6. Run a private test first. Check that both event previews receive the intended audio and video, that playback remains correct through any loop point, and that stream health is acceptable before relying on the setup.

There is no universally valid looping command for every file in the official guidance cited here. Container, timestamps, codec layout, audio, and keyframe spacing can affect whether looping or stream copy behaves correctly. Validate the specific file and FFmpeg build.

How much bandwidth and server capacity do two streams need?

With tee and one encode, FFmpeg sends the same encoded program to two destinations, so the server must sustain outgoing traffic to both. The required upload capacity depends on the bitrate of the feed and network overhead; allow headroom rather than sizing the connection exactly to the nominal combined bitrate. If you encode separate outputs, CPU or other processing demand can rise because FFmpeg may perform more than one encode.

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends choosing a quality your upload connection can sustain and testing representative content, but it does not specify a universal CPU or bandwidth minimum for two FFmpeg outputs. A VPS is one possible remote place to run FFmpeg, not a guarantee of capacity: validate the actual host, network route, file, and encoding plan with a trial run.

Troubleshoot missing or unstable streams

  • One event has no preview: check that its destination is present in the tee output and that the correct key is paired with that event.
  • Both outputs behave unexpectedly: check for accidental key reuse, a key copied from the wrong event, or other activity that may reach YouTube’s active-stream limits.
  • Stream health reports network trouble: measure the server’s upload path while both outputs are active and confirm it has headroom for the outgoing feeds.
  • FFmpeg reports a muxer or output-format error: verify the tee output syntax, each destination’s declared format, and that the installed FFmpeg build includes the required muxers.
  • Video arrives without sound: inspect the input’s audio streams and confirm the intended audio stream is explicitly mapped and encoded or copied compatibly.
  • Playback breaks at a loop boundary or stream copy fails: inspect timestamps, container and codec compatibility, audio layout, and keyframe spacing. Test the specific file rather than assuming copy or looping will work.
  • YouTube shows a stream-health warning: compare the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current guidance, then test again with representative content.
