You can run vMix on AWS EC2, but the key requirement is an instance with graphics hardware that vMix can access through a virtual display. The setup is not simply “install vMix on any Windows server”: choose a GPU-backed Windows instance, use the appropriate NVIDIA Grid driver, make its graphics-connected display the active Windows display, and operate the desktop without RDP. The available vMix EC2 guide was last updated April 16, 2020, so treat its specific instance-family and Windows-version references as historical guidance and verify current AWS offerings before deploying.
What you need to confirm before launching EC2
Plan around the production you intend to run: input sources and formats, output resolution and frame rate, whether you will record, how many streams you will send, and where the operator will connect from. The cited vMix EC2 guidance does not establish a current EC2 size for a particular workload, so there is no evidence-based instance-size recommendation to apply universally.
- Graphics access: vMix says it requires directly attached graphics with virtual-display support. Its EC2 article says G4 or higher supports that technology and calls for NVIDIA Grid drivers, warning that normal NVIDIA drivers will not work. That article dates to 2020; verify the current AWS GPU instance catalog and driver procedure before choosing an instance.
- Windows and CPU: The same guide names Windows Server 2019 x64 and at least four allocated CPU cores. Treat both as the guide’s documented baseline, not a guarantee of present-day compatibility or adequate performance for your workload.
- Remote operation: vMix recommends avoiding Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to operate vMix. It suggests a direct screen-capture tool such as VNC, TeamViewer, or AnyDesk, or a cloud desktop login solution such as Teradici; licensing may add cost.
vMix cautions that shared cloud services do not guarantee performance and advises thoroughly testing the setup before production. A successful installation alone does not establish that a particular EC2 configuration can handle a full show.
Set up vMix on an EC2 Windows instance
- Define and document the workload. List all video and audio sources, graphics, target output resolution and frame rate, recording requirements, stream destinations, and the operator’s remote-access needs. Use this list for a representative rehearsal.
- Select a Windows EC2 instance with virtual-display graphics. Confirm that the current instance family provides directly attached graphics and the virtual-display capability vMix requires. The 2020 vMix article’s “G4 or higher” guidance is not a current AWS catalog guarantee. Check current AWS documentation for supported instance families, Windows images, and drivers before launch.
- Install the EC2-specific NVIDIA Grid driver. vMix’s EC2 guide identifies Grid drivers as necessary and says ordinary NVIDIA drivers will not work. Follow AWS’s current driver documentation for the selected instance rather than assuming a generic driver package is suitable.
- Make the graphics-backed display primary in Windows. In Windows display settings, set the display connected to the graphics adapter as the primary display. Disable extra displays attached to a Microsoft Basic Adapter or a similar virtual/basic display adapter if they interfere with the active graphics display.
- Check that vMix can use the GPU. Open vMix and add an MP4 file as an input. Confirm that its video is visible and plays. vMix’s guide says a blank video indicates that vMix cannot access the graphics card; resolve display and driver configuration before proceeding.
- Choose a non-RDP control method. Set up and test your selected direct screen-capture or cloud desktop solution. Confirm that it remains usable during a representative production load; remote access that works on an idle desktop may not be sufficient for live operation.
- Configure the stream for the receiving service. In vMix’s streaming settings, select an encoder and output settings supported by the destination. The current vMix streaming help recommends FFMPEG for most situations and lists H.264, AV1, or HEVC video with AAC audio. The destination’s ingest requirements and your output workload determine which combination is appropriate; verify compatibility with the receiving service rather than treating one codec as universal.
- Rehearse the whole production. Run the planned sources, graphics, recording, streaming destinations, remote-control connection, and network path together. Check playback, output, and operator control under the intended load. vMix explicitly recommends thorough testing because cloud performance is not guaranteed.
Streaming settings depend on the destination
There is no single bitrate or resolution that can be prescribed for every vMix-on-EC2 production from the cited guidance. Choose a resolution, frame rate, video codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval that both the receiving service accepts and the EC2 workload can sustain. Check that service’s current ingest requirements, then test the actual vMix output and network path in rehearsal. Do not infer a supported setting from an EC2 instance’s GPU capability alone.

Keep the stream key private. Enter the key supplied by the receiving platform in vMix’s streaming configuration, and do not include it in screenshots, recordings, or shared logs. If the destination rejects the stream, confirm the selected service and key, then compare the encoder and output settings with that service’s current ingest guidance.
vMix on EC2 is not AWS’s managed live-streaming architecture
Running vMix on EC2 puts the production and mixing application on a Windows virtual machine that you operate. AWS’s separate Live Streaming on AWS reference solution uses MediaLive for ingest and transcoding, MediaPackage for packaging, and CloudFront for delivery. Its guide describes redundant source feeds and adaptive-bitrate output. That managed pipeline is an architectural alternative, not a method for installing or operating vMix.

The AWS guide says supported regions matter for MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaConnect, and advises stopping the solution’s resources after an event to help avoid unnecessary charges. Those instructions refer to that managed solution, not specifically to vMix on EC2. No current EC2 hourly cost or region availability is established here; check AWS’s current pricing and regional availability for the exact resources you plan to use.
Copyright, permissions, and YouTube live rules
If YouTube is a destination, use only footage, music, graphics, and other material you own or have permission to broadcast. A technically successful stream does not establish that you have the necessary rights, and using a prerecorded recording does not bypass copyright rules or YouTube’s policies on reused content. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright policies for your channel and content before going live. Keep any stream key confidential, and use a private or unlisted rehearsal when appropriate for testing.

Common problems and fixes
- MP4 input appears blank in vMix: vMix may not be accessing the graphics card. Confirm the NVIDIA Grid driver is installed for the selected EC2 instance, set the graphics-backed display as primary, and disable interfering Microsoft Basic Adapter or similar displays.
- vMix starts, but the production stutters or fails under load: A successful launch does not prove the cloud instance can sustain the show. Rehearse with the actual sources, graphics, recording, outputs, and remote connection. Revisit the workload and instance choice if the complete configuration does not meet production needs.
- Remote control behaves poorly during operation: vMix recommends against RDP. Use a suitable direct screen-capture or cloud desktop method and test it while the production is running.
- The destination does not accept the stream: Check that the stream key and destination are correct, then verify the encoder and output configuration against the receiving service’s current requirements. vMix recommends FFMPEG for most situations, but destination compatibility still governs the choice.
- The stream works in rehearsal but not reliably in production: Cloud performance is not guaranteed. Repeat testing under realistic conditions and include the full network path and operator location; do not assume that a prior brief test establishes sustained performance.
