To preserve a YouTube livestream, make a local recording while you stream, then keep a separate copy in cloud storage. YouTube may automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but says streams longer than that may not be captured at all. After the stream, find the replay in YouTube Studio or export your uploaded videos with Google Takeout.
Choose the copy you need
A channel replay and an independent backup are different things. The replay is managed on YouTube: you can change its visibility or delete it. A downloaded or exported copy gives you a file outside your channel. For important recordings, keep both a local original and an additional cloud copy.
| Method | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Local recording during the stream | Keeping the original capture | YouTube recommends making a local archive as a backup. Retain the recording created by your streaming software or capture setup. |
| YouTube Studio download | Getting one uploaded video | YouTube documents an MP4 download at 720p or 360p, depending on video size, subject to eligibility restrictions. |
| Google Takeout | Exporting uploaded videos in bulk | You can select YouTube data and choose an available cloud destination or download the export and upload it yourself. The cited Google instructions do not promise that every livestream export is byte-identical to your local source. |
Before and during the livestream
Record a local backup
If keeping the footage matters, start a local recording in your streaming software or capture setup before you go live, and confirm that it is actually writing to storage. YouTube Help explicitly recommends recording a local archive as a backup. This is the best route to preserve the original local recording rather than relying on a platform-generated download.
Do not rely on the automatic archive for very long streams
YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours, including encoder, webcam, and mobile streams. It warns that if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. If you expect a longer broadcast, make sure your own local recording is running instead of treating the channel replay as your only copy. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Find and manage the YouTube replay
- Sign in to YouTube Studio for the channel that hosted the stream.
- Open Content, then select Live.
- Select the past stream you want. YouTube says archives are uploaded to the channel by default; use the available controls to manage visibility or delete the archive.
If the stream is missing, first check that you are in the right channel or Brand Account and inspect Content > Live. A stream longer than 12 hours may not have been captured, so a missing replay is not proof that a separate local recording or backup exists. YouTube’s archive guidance is at Archive live streams; its live-stream help also describes archive management at Promote your live stream.
Download one of your own livestreams from Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Content and locate the uploaded replay.
- Open the video’s options menu and choose Download.
- Save the MP4 to your computer, then upload it to your chosen cloud account if you want a separate cloud copy.
YouTube says the downloaded MP4 is 720p or 360p depending on video size. This may not be the original camera or encoder file; use the local recording if you need that source. YouTube’s individual-download workflow also has limits: the video must not have been removed, have a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, or use a pre-approved audio track. An individual video can be downloaded up to five times in 24 hours. See YouTube Help: Download YouTube videos that you’ve uploaded.

Export videos in bulk with Google Takeout
- Open Google’s data-download page and select YouTube data for export.
- Choose an export destination offered for your account. Google documents options including Drive, Box, OneDrive, and Dropbox; availability can depend on the export flow.
- If you prefer, download the export and upload the files to the cloud account you want to use.
- Check that the destination has enough available space before starting. If your videos belong to a Brand Account, switch to that account if needed so the export includes the right videos.
Google says an export copies your data and does not delete it from Google’s servers. Takeout is useful for a larger archive, but the cited help page does not guarantee that each livestream export is identical to the original local recording. Read Google Account Help: How to download your Google data.

Plan storage and keep copies organized
There is no universal storage figure for a livestream archive. File size depends on recording length, resolution, bitrate, and how many streams you retain. Check the actual file sizes of a few recordings, estimate how long you plan to keep them, and confirm the cloud destination has enough space. Cloud quotas and plan terms vary; compare the current terms with your own retention needs rather than assuming a fixed allowance.
- Keep the original local recording when quality or editing flexibility matters.
- Store a separate cloud copy for access outside the streaming computer.
- Use clear filenames with the stream date and title so you can find recordings later.
- Remember that exporting does not delete the YouTube archive; manage channel visibility separately if needed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube livestream—not to make an archive of a live camera broadcast—StreamNeo is a separate option. Upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or current plans. To try it, start your free day.
