Scale Wowza Streaming Engine by measuring the real workload first, then adding capacity where the bottleneck actually sits: stream processing, origin ingest, viewer delivery, or network throughput. For a larger live event, a common pattern is for encoders to publish to origin server(s), with edge servers serving viewers; for HTTP playback, HTTP Origin mode can let a cache or CDN absorb some delivery demand. There is no dependable universal viewer limit per server: load-test the codecs, bitrates, protocols, transcoding profile, and audience behavior you expect to run.

Start by finding the workload and its bottleneck

Before adding servers, write down what the deployment must handle. Scaling a game tournament stream with one fixed feed is a different problem from scaling several feeds that Wowza must transcode, or an event whose audience is spread across distant regions.

  • Incoming streams: count concurrent encoder feeds and record their bitrates, codecs, and protocols.
  • Viewer demand: estimate expected peak viewers, where they are located, and whether demand could spike unexpectedly.
  • Delivery mix: identify how viewers will play the stream, including whether delivery is HTTP-based, such as HLS or MPEG-DASH.
  • Processing: establish whether Wowza will transcode, and which output renditions and profiles the event requires.
  • Capacity and cost: compare the cost of keeping peak capacity online with adding cloud capacity for an event and removing it afterward.

Wowza says a server’s comfortable concurrent-stream capacity depends on hardware, network configuration, stream type, bitrate, and connection type. Its documentation includes cluster scenarios labelled up to 50,000 concurrent connections and above 50,000, but these are scenario descriptions—not a per-server rating or guarantee. Wowza’s guidance is to load-test the particular configuration; no universal maximum applies to every deployment.

Choose an architecture for the part that needs to scale

Origin and edge servers for live delivery

In a repeater deployment, encoders publish their feeds to an origin, and edge servers deliver streams to viewers. The origin can also handle transcoding. Edges reduce the repeated work an origin would otherwise do for viewers; Wowza’s overview describes one connection per stream for each player type between an origin and an edge. Add edge capacity as demand grows, and use a load-balancing method to direct player connections across the edges.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Wowza’s current setup documentation supports configuring a primary origin and an optional secondary origin. The secondary is for failover: the documentation says clients may wait up to 12 seconds for failover to the backup origin when the primary fails. Treat that as documented behavior, not a guaranteed recovery time for every client, network, or failure.

Pick repeater mode based on stream availability and playback behavior

Mode How it behaves Best fit and tradeoff
On-demand An edge requests a stream when a player asks for it. It is the default for Live Edge applications. The origin packetizes HTTP segments, so edges can use the same segment sequence. Useful when viewers’ requests should trigger edge connections and you want a simpler setup that can scale quickly. Wowza says matching segment sequences can support seamless player migration between edges.
Persistent Configured streams connect in advance, using Stream Files or Java API methods. HTTP segments may differ between edges. Useful when streams should be available before the first viewer arrives. A player moved between edges may be interrupted if segment sequences differ. For continuously requested multiple protocols, Wowza says persistent mode is more likely to use less bandwidth over a long period; on-demand connections disconnect when no longer requested.

Neither mode is the best choice for every event. Weigh whether streams must be available before viewers arrive, the protocols in use, bandwidth over the event’s duration, the risk of player migration, and the operational work of maintaining configured connections. Wowza’s repeater overview dates to 2021; confirm setup details against the documentation for the Engine version you deploy.

HTTP Origin with a cache or CDN for HTTP playback

Normal HTTP playback sessions have unique session IDs, which Wowza says prevent HTTP proxies from caching them. HTTP Origin mode is sessionless, allowing caching proxies to cache and re-stream HTTP content. For HLS or MPEG-DASH workflows, this can reduce requests reaching the Engine when viewer connections exceed what one server can handle. It is a delivery offload for HTTP playback, not a general-purpose fix for every protocol or for a transcoding bottleneck.

Wowza documents Amazon CloudFront as a ready-built HTTP caching proxy that can sit in front of an Engine server and scale automatically. It also names third-party CDN options such as Akamai and EdgeCast. Its developer guide describes a Wowza CDN on Fastly workflow: stream directly to that CDN from a Live HTTP Origin application, or send a stream to Wowza Video for transcoding and CDN delivery. Check the relevant service’s current availability, configuration requirements, and pricing for your region and workload; the cited documentation does not establish current prices, and a CDN is not automatically the cheapest choice. Wowza notes that CloudFront can be costly for long periods of heavy use in one cluster scenario.

Temporary cloud edges for a short event

If a tournament, launch, or one-off broadcast needs more delivery capacity only for a short period, cloud Engine instances can be added as edges and removed when demand falls. Compare the full runtime and setup cost with keeping peak-capacity infrastructure running continuously. Cloud instances can provide temporary capacity, but they do not eliminate the need to test the architecture or plan how viewers will be routed.

Multicast only for a controlled private network

For viewers on a controlled private network where routers can be configured for multicast, UDP multicast can move the fan-out work to network routers instead of a Wowza server cluster. Wowza documents RTP and MPEG-TS over multicast and recommends RTP; its documentation notes MPEG-TS licensing requirements. This is not a default option for public-internet audiences whose networks you do not control.

Keep transcoding capacity separate from viewer-delivery capacity

Wowza Transcoder decodes incoming audio and video and re-encodes outputs for target devices. That work can make CPU or supported hardware acceleration the constraint even when delivery of already encoded segments is manageable. Aligned keyframes in output renditions support adaptive-bitrate delivery, so the transcoding profile is part of the workload to reproduce in a capacity test.

The current Transcoder guide says video scaling uses CPU by default. It documents supported NVIDIA CUDA and AMD Xilinx U30 acceleration options that can reduce CPU use for scaling, subject to platform and configuration limits; AMD Xilinx U30 acceleration is Linux-only. A GPU identifier setting does not itself provide automatic GPU load balancing. Do not select a GPU or assume a performance gain without checking compatibility with your Engine version and platform and benchmarking the intended profile.

Load-test the deployment before the event

  1. Recreate the production workload. Use representative source streams, codecs, bitrates, protocols, transcoding settings, and viewer behavior. A test with a different profile does not establish the capacity of the production setup.
  2. Increase demand in stages. Ramp source-stream and viewer load rather than relying on a single peak snapshot. Include the expected peak and any plausible audience spike.
  3. Record both server and playback signals. Track CPU and other server-resource use, network throughput, startup time, buffering, and errors. Note when quality begins to degrade, not just when a server stops responding.
  4. Test the failure path. Take an origin or edge out of service in a controlled test. Confirm how the load balancer detects failures and removes servers, what clients experience, and whether the secondary origin or regional delivery plan behaves as intended.
  5. Set a tested operating limit. Use the point where quality begins to degrade to leave room for normal variation; do not treat a short-lived maximum as a safe event capacity.

Wowza’s documentation index points to a load-testing guide using Apache JMeter, but the reviewed guidance does not provide a universal benchmark or a standard load profile. Choose a test that reflects your actual streams, audience, and infrastructure.

Build the deployment in a practical sequence

  1. Establish the baseline. Run the intended stream and transcoding profile on the proposed server and network configuration. Measure delivery and processing separately where possible.
  2. Decide where to add capacity. If the limiting work is viewer delivery, evaluate edge servers or—when playback is HTTP and cache-compatible—HTTP Origin with a cache or CDN. If transcoding is the constraint, evaluate the processing profile and supported acceleration options instead of assuming more delivery edges will solve it.
  3. Configure origin and edge routing. Send encoder feeds to the origin and direct player connections to the edges through a load balancer. Choose on-demand or persistent mode to match stream availability, protocol, bandwidth, and migration needs.
  4. Plan origin redundancy and edge health checks. Configure a secondary origin if the deployment requires it, and test client behavior during failover. Configure the load balancer to detect and stop routing to failed servers, then verify the behavior under load.
  5. Repeat the load test on the complete architecture. A single-server result does not prove that origin, edges, cache, load balancer, and network together will handle the event. Test the final path, including failure scenarios, before relying on it live.

Wowza’s scaling guidance does not prescribe a universal bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or viewers-per-server figure. Keep the event’s real encoder and transcoder settings in the test, and use the tested deployment—not a generic setting or server count—as the capacity basis.

Troubleshoot scaling symptoms by layer

Symptom Likely area to investigate Next action
Playback quality degrades as viewers increase Viewer delivery capacity, network throughput, or the load balancer’s distribution. Check throughput and server-resource measurements during the same load ramp. Test additional edges or HTTP caching for cacheable HTTP playback, then repeat the full workload test.
CPU rises sharply when outputs are enabled Transcoding or video scaling, rather than viewer fan-out alone. Compare the tested transcoding profile with production. Check the platform and configuration requirements for supported acceleration; verify any proposed change with a benchmark.
An edge does not have a stream ready before the first viewer requests it On-demand repeater behavior. If streams must connect in advance, assess persistent mode through Stream Files or Java API methods, accounting for its bandwidth and player-migration tradeoffs.
Playback is interrupted after a player moves to another edge In persistent mode, HTTP segment sequences may differ between edges. Test player migration with the selected mode and routing behavior. On-demand mode uses origin-packetized HTTP segments so the same sequence is available at edges, but validate it in the deployed setup.
HTTP requests still place heavy load on the Engine The HTTP workflow may not be using HTTP Origin’s sessionless, cacheable delivery path, or the cache/CDN may not be configured for the stream. Verify that the playback workflow uses HTTP Origin mode and test the cache path end to end. HTTP Origin addresses HTTP delivery, not unrelated processing or network limits.
Origin failure takes longer than expected to recover Client behavior, network conditions, or backup-origin failover. Test primary-origin failure with representative clients and networks. Wowza documents that clients may wait up to 12 seconds for failover to a secondary origin; do not assume every client recovers on that exact schedule.

Which starting architecture fits?

Situation Starting point Main tradeoff
One stream and a modest, predictable audience One Engine instance, then load-test and monitor it. Simplest to operate, but its capacity is limited to what that exact configuration has been tested to handle.
A large audience served by Wowza servers One or more repeater origins, edge servers, and load balancing. Adds server capacity and control, along with routing and cluster operations.
Mostly HLS or MPEG-DASH viewers and a bursty event HTTP Origin with a CDN or caching proxy. Can offload HTTP delivery; requires a cache-compatible workflow, configuration, and workload-specific cost review.
A short event that needs temporary Wowza capacity Add cloud Engine instances as edges for the event. Avoids buying permanent peak hardware, but runtime and setup still need budgeting.
Viewers on a controlled private network Consider UDP multicast if network routers support it. Routers provide fan-out; it is not a general solution for uncontrolled public-internet viewers.
