You still need an encoder running on the laptop, a reliable internet connection, and media you have the rights to stream. Before you start, check that your channel is eligible and plan around YouTube’s limits on archiving very long streams.
What “schedule a 24/7 channel” means
A scheduled stream gives viewers an upcoming YouTube event they can find and set a reminder for. The laptop and encoder supply the live video and audio; they must be running when the broadcast begins and stay operational for as long as you want to stream. Scheduling does not start the laptop, create a playlist feed, or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
For a channel intended to run continuously, you also need an operations plan: keep the laptop powered, prevent sleep, monitor sustained heat and stability, and decide how you will handle interruptions and replays. YouTube’s cited guidance does not set a universal CPU or RAM minimum for this use. An unspecified old laptop cannot be assumed to encode reliably for days; test the actual machine with your chosen settings.
Check YouTube eligibility before preparing the stream
- The channel must be verified and have no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current general guidance sets the minimum age for live streaming at 16.
- Enable live streaming early. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until the scheduled start.
- Prepare only media you are entitled to stream. Rights need to cover the intended uses and territories, including music where relevant.
YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content. A match can lead to a placeholder, interruption, or termination if the content remains in the stream. Having a license does not necessarily prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. Public availability of a song or video is not permission to rebroadcast it.

Schedule the YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream.
- Create a new scheduled event or reuse settings, then set the title, description, privacy, and scheduled time. Check the displayed time and time zone before confirming.
- Review the event in Live Control Room. A scheduled event can appear as upcoming, where viewers may choose Notify me.
Studio creates the event and its watch-page presence. You will still need to connect an encoder and send a live feed for the event to actually broadcast.
Configure the spare laptop and encoder
- Choose an encoder that the laptop can run continuously while processing your playlist. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders; the specific choice depends on the device and media. There is no YouTube-published universal laptop specification for this job.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, get the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your channel. Reset it if it is exposed.
- Load the rights-cleared videos into the encoder’s playlist or playback workflow and configure it to repeat them. Check both picture and sound in the preview; the event schedule alone does not make a playlist loop.
- Keep the laptop on reliable power and disable sleep while streaming. Check that its cooling remains effective and that it stays stable under sustained load. These are practical precautions, not an official minimum hardware standard.
Test the connection and go live
Check outbound upload capacity, not just download speed. The connection needs to sustain the encoder’s selected bitrate, with headroom for normal variation and other devices sharing the network. A wired Ethernet connection can be useful where available, but it does not guarantee continuity. As YouTube puts it, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.”

- Set up the encoder at least two hours before the scheduled event, as YouTube recommends.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event so you can check the Live Control Room preview and confirm that audio and video are reaching YouTube.
- Check the stream from another device if possible. Confirm the correct event, picture, sound, and playlist playback before relying on the broadcast.
- Keep an eye on the live preview and laptop while it runs. If the stream stops, inspect the encoder, power, connection, and YouTube Live Control Room before restarting.
Plan for long streams and replays
A single stream lasting more than 12 hours may not be captured in YouTube’s archive at all. DVR features may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Do not promise viewers a complete replay of a continuous 24-hour broadcast.
Decide before launch whether you will end and restart shorter sessions, and how you will preserve the original videos or local recordings. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. Its guidance does not establish an official restart cadence for a 24/7 channel, so choose a schedule that fits your operation and test how you will manage each transition.

Common problems and fixes
- The scheduled event exists, but viewers see no live video: Scheduling does not send a feed. Start the encoder and confirm it has the correct stream URL and key.
- Studio will not let the channel go live: Check channel verification, the 90-day restriction requirement, and whether first-time activation has completed. Activation can take up to 24 hours.
- The stream drops or becomes unstable: Check outbound upload capacity, competing network use, laptop power and sleep settings, and encoder status. YouTube notes that a connectivity disruption can break a stream; no connection method guarantees uninterrupted service.
- The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: Remove or replace the identified material and verify that you have the necessary streaming rights. A license may not prevent a Content ID interruption unless the rights owner has allowlisted the channel.
- There is no complete replay: A stream over 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR may be limited or unavailable. Keep your own media or recording backup and plan the broadcast length with this limitation in mind.
