Schedule the event in YouTube Studio, load the video into an OBS Media Source, connect OBS to the event’s stream key, and start sending the feed early enough to preview it. Scheduling creates the event and watch page; it does not start OBS or play the file automatically. You must check the feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room and click Go live when you are ready.
Before you begin
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Have the prerecorded video file ready and confirm that you can play its picture and sound in OBS.
- Plan to configure the encoder at least two hours before the event and start it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time, as YouTube recommends. YouTube live streaming tips
Schedule the YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, then open Manage.
- Choose Schedule stream. Create a new event or reuse settings from an existing stream.
- Set the event’s title, description, audience, privacy, and scheduled start time. Review these details before saving; they appear with the scheduled event.
- Copy the event URL if you want to share the watch page or promote the stream. Scheduling makes a destination viewers can visit and lets them set reminders; it does not transmit your local video. YouTube Help: Schedule a live stream
Add the video to an OBS scene
- Open OBS and select the scene you intend to use, or create one for this broadcast.
- In Sources, select + and add a Media Source. Give it a recognizable name and choose the video file.
- Fit the source to the canvas so the image fills the intended output. Check the OBS preview for cropping, black bars, or an unexpected aspect ratio.
- For a single playback, leave Loop off. Turn it on only if you want the file to repeat after it finishes.
- Restart playback when source becomes active is on by default in the documented OBS Media Source controls. It restarts the file when the source becomes visible in the current scene. Check the setting and preview the scene before the broadcast. OBS Project: Media Sources
- Play the source and confirm that both video and audio are present. Check OBS’s audio meters while the file plays; silence in the preview or meters is easier to fix before going live.
OBS documents MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among the Media Source formats. Its Media Sources knowledge-base page is dated January 11, 2022; labels or behavior may differ in a later installed version.
Connect OBS to the scheduled stream
- Open the scheduled event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- In OBS stream settings, select YouTube as the service if that option is available and connect as prompted. Otherwise, copy the event’s stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into OBS.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it, send it to viewers, or share it in a public screenshot. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Confirm OBS is sending the intended scene and that its output settings match the video you prepared. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth above the total streaming bitrate, with 20% headroom. If using primary and backup ingestion, allow for both bitrates plus that margin. YouTube live streaming tips
Preview, go live, and end the broadcast
- Start streaming from OBS at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event, following YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- In Live Control Room, wait until YouTube shows the incoming OBS preview. Check that the video is moving, the audio is present, and the correct event is selected.
- When the preview is correct and you are ready for viewers, click Go live in Live Control Room. The OBS encoder feed and the YouTube event are separate steps: starting OBS sends the feed, while the control-room handoff starts the event for viewers.
- Monitor the broadcast while it runs. At the end, end the stream in YouTube and stop streaming from OBS. YouTube automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
Copyright and stream-content checks
Use video and audio you have the rights to broadcast, including music, game footage, and any other third-party material in the recording. A scheduled event and an OBS connection do not grant permission to use copyrighted content. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules before broadcasting, especially if the recording includes licensed music or material from another creator. Do not assume that looping or labeling a recording as live changes how YouTube evaluates its content.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The event is scheduled, but nothing starts | Scheduling creates the event; it does not start OBS or send the file. | Open the event in Live Control Room, start streaming from OBS, wait for the preview, then click Go live. |
| No preview appears in Live Control Room | OBS may not be sending, or its service, stream URL, or key may not match the scheduled event. | Check OBS’s streaming status and confirm the event’s stream settings. Ensure OBS is connected to the scheduled event’s key, not an unrelated stream. |
| The preview has no picture or the wrong picture | The Media Source may be missing, hidden, inactive, or outside the canvas. | Check that the source is visible in the selected scene, select the intended file, and fit it to the canvas. Confirm playback in OBS before starting the encoder. |
| Viewers cannot hear the recording | The source may not be producing audio or its audio may not be reaching the stream mix. | Play the file in OBS and watch the audio meters. Check the source and OBS audio routing, then verify sound in YouTube’s preview before clicking Go live. |
| The video plays again unexpectedly | Loop is enabled, or the source restarted when it became active. | For one-time playback, turn Loop off and check Restart playback when source becomes active. Make the source active before the event if you need to avoid a restart on scene change. |
| The stream stutters or disconnects | Upload capacity may be insufficient or unstable for the total outgoing bitrate. | Compare available upload bandwidth with the stream bitrate and leave at least YouTube’s recommended 20% margin. For primary plus backup ingestion, account for both bitrates plus the margin. Test ahead of the event rather than relying on a last-minute start. |
| Live streaming is unavailable on the channel | The channel may not be verified, may have a restriction within the preceding 90 days, or may still be waiting for first-time activation. | Check channel eligibility in YouTube Studio, complete verification if needed, and allow up to 24 hours for initial activation. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a one-off scheduled broadcast, OBS gives you direct control over the encoder and the YouTube preview-to-live handoff. If you want uploaded video to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
