First identify what stopped: if OBS is still open, use its automatic reconnect; if OBS has closed, schedule OBS to relaunch with its --startstreaming parameter; if YouTube ended the broadcast, check the event and encoder settings in YouTube Studio. These are separate recovery jobs. A scheduled restart can reopen OBS, but it cannot fix a bad network route, an invalid stream key, or a YouTube-side problem.
Identify which part disconnected
- OBS is open, but its stream output dropped: OBS automatic reconnect can retry the running output.
- OBS crashed or closed: automatic reconnect cannot help once the process is gone. Use an operating-system scheduler or supervisor to launch OBS again.
- OBS is still sending, but YouTube’s broadcast ended: check the YouTube event, stream status, stream key, and auto-start/auto-stop settings. YouTube’s event controls are not a documented way to relaunch a crashed encoder.
Keep these responsibilities distinct: OBS retries an output, a scheduler relaunches a process, and YouTube manages the broadcast event.
Set up OBS automatic reconnect for a dropped output
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and configure Automatic Reconnect. The retry count and starting wait are configurable; OBS’s API documentation says the retry time doubles on each retry. The setting is for a running OBS output, not a restart schedule, and it does not guarantee recovery.
- Confirm OBS is still running and that its output is attempting to reconnect.
- Open Settings → Advanced and enable automatic reconnect. Set the retry behavior appropriate to your connection and the expected length of an interruption.
- Save the setting, then test it under supervision by briefly interrupting the connection. Confirm OBS resumes output and YouTube receives the feed.
Schedule OBS to relaunch if it exits
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter for starting a stream when OBS is launched, including through scheduled tasks and other automation. Configure your operating system’s scheduler or process supervisor to launch OBS with that parameter. OBS also calls out a working-directory requirement: set the working directory to the folder containing the OBS executable.

- Prepare the OBS setup: confirm the intended profile, scene, and YouTube destination are selected. A relaunch is only useful if OBS opens the correct setup.
- Configure the launch: use the OBS executable and its documented
--startstreamingparameter in the scheduler or supervisor. Set the working directory to the OBS executable folder. - Decide how to handle an existing process: configure the scheduler so it does not create overlapping OBS instances. The appropriate option varies by operating system, scheduler, and OBS version; test the behavior on the machine that will run the stream.
- Test recovery: with the stream supervised, close OBS and verify that the scheduler relaunches the intended profile and starts streaming. Confirm the YouTube event receives the feed before relying on unattended operation.
A relaunch schedule is not a substitute for OBS automatic reconnect. Use reconnect for temporary output drops while OBS remains open; use a scheduler for a process that has exited.
Check YouTube Live Control Room after a broadcast ends
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check that the intended event is still active and that the encoder is using the correct stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address,” so do not share them publicly. If an authorized channel owner or manager resets a compromised key, update the encoder with the new key.

Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop choices as well. Those options control whether the encoder can start or stop streaming in relation to the event; they do not relaunch OBS after a local crash. If the event has ended, resolve the event status rather than repeatedly restarting the encoder.
Troubleshoot recurring drops before adding more restarts
OBS’s troubleshooting guidance frames dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a possible network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. That is a useful diagnostic direction, not proof that every failure has the same cause.

- Upload capacity or unstable connection: lower the stream bitrate and check whether the connection can sustain it reliably.
- Ingest server path: try another available server and compare whether the disconnects continue.
- Network configuration: investigate VPN or security software and network settings that may interrupt the connection.
- Modem, router, or ISP: check the local network equipment and contact the ISP if the connection remains unstable.
- Key or event mismatch: verify the stream URL, key, and active YouTube event before setting the scheduler to retry repeatedly.
Repeated automatic launches can mask a persistent connection, key, event, or source-file problem. Resolve the underlying fault instead of treating a reboot as the fix.
