You can keep a prerecorded playlist streaming to YouTube while your own computer is off by running FFmpeg on an always-on cloud VM. YouTube Studio schedules and promotes a live event; FFmpeg supplies the media feed. Scheduling alone does not automate a continuous playlist, and a single uninterrupted stream is different from a sequence of scheduled events.
Choose the right workflow: scheduled events or continuous playout
| Need | Workflow | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| A watch page viewers can find before a stream starts, with a defined start time | Schedule a YouTube event in Studio | Creates and promotes an event page. An encoder still has to send the feed when it is time to go live. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow. |
| One ongoing playlist that plays while your computer is off | Run FFmpeg on an always-on VM | Reads media from persistent storage, paces it in real time, and sends it to YouTube. You must supervise the process and prepare recovery. |
| A series of separate events with the same encoder settings | Schedule separate broadcasts and reuse an ingest configuration | YouTube’s API distinguishes a liveBroadcast event from a reusable liveStream ingest resource. Multiple broadcasts can use one stream resource, but only one event is live at a time in the documented pattern. See YouTube Live Streaming API documentation. |
If you need a truly continuous channel feed, treat scheduling as event promotion and configuration—not as playlist automation. If you need distinct starts, stops, and watch pages, plan separate broadcasts rather than assuming one scheduled event becomes a permanent channel.
Schedule the YouTube event in Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room. Choose Manage, then schedule a stream.
- Set the event’s title, visibility, date and time, audience designation, and other applicable event settings. Review the details before saving; they describe the event and its watch page.
- In the encoder setup shown for the event, note the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- When you are ready to broadcast, configure FFmpeg with the ingest URL and key, then start sending media. YouTube’s documented encoder workflow ends when the encoder stops sending content.
A scheduled event does not start playing a file on its own. You need to start the encoder at the right time and check the Live Control Room to confirm the incoming feed and stream health.
Prepare an India-region VM and media storage
A cloud VM removes the need to leave a home computer running, but it does not remove the need for persistent media, a stable outbound connection, or operational monitoring. An Indian region is a location choice, not proof that a VM has enough capacity or suitable terms for continuous streaming.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Persistent media: Keep the playlist files on storage that remains available across VM restarts, either attached persistent disk or another accessible storage service. Verify that the files are readable by the account running FFmpeg.
- Encoding capacity: Check sustained CPU performance for your chosen encoding mode. Software encoding can consume substantial CPU; hardware acceleration depends on the VM and must be supported and tested. No universal instance size is established for this workload.
- Network and transfer: Confirm outbound bandwidth and transfer limits against the bitrate and duration you intend to run. A generous peak speed does not itself establish unlimited sustained transfer.
- Restart and availability behavior: Check what happens after a host restart, maintenance event, or service interruption. Configure the process to start again and determine how you will detect a failed feed.
- Provider terms and region availability: Confirm current India-region availability and service terms directly with the provider. Capacity, pricing, and limits vary; there is no evidenced provider or price that fits every channel.
Build a reliable FFmpeg playlist workflow
The basic signal path is: persistent media on the VM, FFmpeg reading and pacing that media, then FFmpeg sending the output to YouTube’s ingest address with your event’s stream key. FFmpeg’s official documentation describes -re (also called -readrate 1) as reading input at its native frame rate, which is useful when output timing matters, such as live streaming: FFmpeg documentation. That option does not by itself make a process reliable for days, guarantee seamless looping, or verify that a particular file and output configuration will work.
- Validate your media first. Test every file and transition in the playlist. Check that the chosen inputs, codecs, frame rates, audio tracks, and durations are compatible with the output settings you plan to use.
- Decide how the playlist loops. Choose an input or playlist arrangement that continues through the intended files and returns to the beginning. Test end-of-file behavior and transitions; do not assume that one looping flag will handle every mix of media.
- Set real-time pacing. Use FFmpeg’s real-time input pacing where appropriate so files are not read and sent as fast as storage permits. Confirm that the output timing remains stable with the actual media.
- Configure the YouTube destination. Use the stream URL and key shown in Live Control Room. Keep credentials out of public scripts, screenshots, and logs, and restrict access to the VM and configuration files.
- Supervise the process. Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor or equivalent restart mechanism, retain logs, and monitor both the VM and YouTube Live Control Room. A restart policy can bring a process back; it cannot guarantee a successful reconnection or a healthy stream.
- Test recovery before relying on it. Simulate a process restart and, where safe, a connection interruption. Confirm whether FFmpeg reconnects, whether the event remains usable, and what manual action is needed if YouTube no longer accepts the feed.
There is no single production command that can be declared reliable for every combination of files, codecs, output settings, and VM. Use the actual playlist and intended settings for a test broadcast, inspect Live Control Room health, and verify recovery behavior before leaving it unattended.

Plan archives and longer broadcasts
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on one complete YouTube archive for a continuous stream lasting 12 hours or longer. If complete on-demand copies matter, arrange separate shorter events or make and store an independent recording. The archive rule is a platform limit, not a guarantee about how a longer stream will be handled. See YouTube’s live stream archiving guidance.
When a managed cloud video pipeline is different
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a separate managed transcoding architecture, not simply FFmpeg running on a VM. Its documented output is HLS or DASH saved to Cloud Storage: Google Cloud Live Stream API overview. That describes a different delivery and storage path; it does not establish that the API directly sends an encoder feed to YouTube. Choose it only if managed transcoding and those output formats fit your design. With a VM, you control the FFmpeg process and YouTube ingest configuration; with a managed pipeline, the service handles a documented transcoding workflow, while setup and delivery architecture still need to be planned.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube event exists, but viewers see no feed: Scheduling creates the event page, not the media feed. Start FFmpeg and check that its destination URL and stream key match the event’s encoder setup.
- The stream key is rejected or the wrong event receives video: Recheck the key and ingest URL in Live Control Room. Avoid reusing a key unintentionally across configurations, and replace an exposed key through YouTube’s controls.
- FFmpeg stops at a file boundary: Inspect the playlist and loop behavior with the actual files. Check logs for unreadable paths, unsupported media, and end-of-input errors; test the transition before going live.
- The VM runs, but playback stutters or the feed drops: Check sustained CPU usage, outbound network stability, transfer limits, and Live Control Room health. Region alone does not guarantee adequate capacity.
- The process does not return after a VM restart: Check the supervisor or startup configuration, file mount availability, credentials, and logs. A successful machine restart is not proof that FFmpeg resumed the correct stream.
- A long stream has no complete archive: YouTube’s stated automatic archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours. Use shorter separate events or an independent recording plan if a complete copy is required.
