How to Schedule a YouTube 24/7 Stream Playlist with Google Sheets and Apps Script

Google Sheets and Apps Script can automate YouTube broadcast scheduling, but an encoder or playout system must send the continuous feed.

You can use Google Sheets and Apps Script to organize a schedule and automate YouTube live-broadcast tasks, but they do not play or transmit video. A continuous YouTube feed still needs an encoder or another playout system. First decide whether you want to schedule separate live events or change the video playing inside one continuous event: YouTube’s API treats those as different jobs, and a minute-based Apps Script trigger is not a frame-accurate playlist scheduler.

What “schedule a 24/7 stream playlist” can mean

There are two distinct tasks hidden in that phrase. You might want to create and schedule YouTube live-broadcast events using rows in a spreadsheet. Or you might want different videos to play at set times inside one continuous live broadcast. Google’s API documentation describes broadcast events and the streams that carry their audio-video feed; the documented workflow does not provide a ready-made Sheets-driven system for switching playlist items inside a continuous feed.

  • Schedule events: Apps Script can read event details from a Sheet and make authorized requests to YouTube’s Live Streaming API to create or manage broadcast resources.
  • Play or switch videos: An encoder or playout system must produce and transmit the feed. The Sheet can be a schedule or data source, but Apps Script’s time-driven triggers do not play video or guarantee precise media changes.

Google for Developers describes a broadcast as a distinct YouTube video or event and a stream as the resource that carries audio-video content. Each broadcast is associated with one stream. The same stream can be bound to as many as three live broadcasts, and YouTube documents reusing a stream for different broadcasts at different times. Its example of a continuous feed with a separate interview broadcast illustrates why event scheduling and feed production should be planned separately.

Choose the right setup for your channel

Approach Best suited to What it does not do
YouTube Studio scheduling A creator scheduling a small number of events and managing their viewer-facing details in YouTube’s interface. It does not remove the need for an encoder or playout system to send the video feed.
Google Sheets, Apps Script, and the YouTube API An operator who wants a structured schedule and automation for broadcast metadata or state changes. It is not, by itself, a continuous video playout system or precise playlist-switching clock.

YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room lets creators schedule a stream, reuse settings from a prior stream, or create new settings. A scheduled event can appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds, where viewers may choose “Notify me.” Choose Studio if managing a few events manually is enough; use Sheets and Apps Script when you need schedule data and API-driven event administration.

Plan the spreadsheet and the separate video feed

Use the Sheet as structured schedule data

Create a schedule tab with one row per event or planned playlist item. Keep event administration separate from media playback. For event scheduling, useful columns include a unique row or event identifier, title, planned start time, privacy status, and a processing status such as “pending” or “created.” If you are also tracking media for a separate playout system, keep its file or playlist reference in its own column; do not treat that reference as a command that Apps Script can play.

Apps Script’s Spreadsheet service can read a rectangular range as a two-dimensional array. Your script can use that data to validate rows, decide which API operation to request, and record the outcome. Validate required fields and timestamps before making API calls, and make each row’s processing repeatable without creating duplicate events when a run is retried.

Arrange a feed-producing system

The encoder or playout system is responsible for sending the continuous audio-video feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance calls for entering the server URL and stream key in the encoder. Hardware video encoders are one possible option, but they are optional infrastructure for this spreadsheet logic; the cited guidance also covers encoder software. Confirm that the chosen system can provide the continuity and playback behavior you actually need.

Automate scheduled broadcast events with Apps Script

The following is the API workflow documented by Google for managing broadcast resources. It explains the operations your automation needs to perform; it is not a tested, copy-and-paste Apps Script project. Set up and authorize the YouTube API access for your own project, and test the channel’s behavior before relying on automation.

  1. Prepare and validate a row. Read the schedule range with the Spreadsheet service. Check that each event has a title, scheduled start time, and privacy status before proceeding. Keep a status or identifier in the Sheet so a retry can distinguish an unprocessed row from an event already created.
  2. Create the broadcast. Use liveBroadcasts.insert to create the event with its title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. A broadcast is the YouTube event or video page, not the video feed itself.
  3. Create or select a stream. Use a liveStream resource for the incoming feed, with CDN transmission settings such as ingestion type, resolution, and frame rate. The encoder or playout system must use the corresponding feed details to transmit video.
  4. Associate event and feed. Use liveBroadcasts.bind to bind the broadcast to the stream. YouTube documents that one stream may be bound to up to three broadcasts.
  5. Move the event through its state. Use liveBroadcasts.transition when the event needs to enter testing or live state. The API can also list upcoming broadcasts, which can help your automation check what is scheduled.
  6. Record the result and handle errors. Store the returned event details or an error against the Sheet row. Make retries safe, log failures, and provide a way to review rows that need attention rather than assuming every timed run succeeded.

YouTube’s broadcast guidance recommends enabling the monitor stream and disabling auto-start when you want a testing phase. Auto-start and auto-stop can simplify operation: with them enabled, YouTube starts after feed transmission begins and ends about a minute after transmission stops. Metadata can be updated, but scheduled start and end time updates have state constraints. Verify the current API behavior and the state of your own event before changing a schedule that has progressed beyond its initial state.

Use Apps Script triggers carefully

An installable time-driven trigger can run as often as every minute, but that does not make it a reliable media-playout clock. Google notes that trigger times can be randomized: a recurring trigger chosen for 9 a.m., for example, may be assigned a time within the following hour and continue at that timing. Do not use one to promise that a specific video will switch at an exact second.

  • Installable triggers run as the account that created them, even when another editor interacts with the Sheet. Use an account whose access to the channel and project will remain appropriate.
  • Script executions and API requests do not themselves cause installable triggers to run. Build an explicit processing flow rather than expecting one script action to trigger another automatically.
  • Google’s Apps Script quota documentation, accessed in 2026, lists a six-minute maximum for an individual script execution, along with different daily trigger-runtime and URL Fetch allowances for consumer and Workspace accounts and a limit on triggers per user per script. Limits can change without notice; check the current quotas for the account type you use.

Design for batches, idempotent processing, error logging, and recovery. A trigger should pick up eligible rows and exit, not act as a permanently running script. Keep the feed running independently of spreadsheet execution.

Configure stream access and protect the key

The stream key is a credential used by the encoder to send the feed to YouTube. YouTube’s setup guidance says to enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder. Treat the key as secret: do not put it in a publicly shared Sheet, a public script, or a log that other people can read. Channel owners or managers can reset it in Live Control Room; if it is reset, update the encoder with the replacement details or the feed may stop reaching YouTube.

Before a scheduled event, verify the event’s title, time, privacy setting, stream association, and encoder configuration. If you want a test before going live, use the broadcast setup options intended for monitoring and keep auto-start disabled as YouTube recommends for that scenario.

Protect the channel and the content

Only schedule and transmit recordings you have the necessary rights to use, and check YouTube’s current rules for live content and reused material before building a recurring playlist. A scheduling script does not grant permission to use music, video, or other people’s recordings, and the API workflow described here does not determine whether a channel or a particular video complies with YouTube’s policies. Review the current rules that apply to your content and channel rather than assuming that an uninterrupted or repeated stream is automatically eligible for every YouTube feature.

Keep a human review step for new playlist items and changes to event metadata. For a long-running channel, also decide who can access the Sheet, script, channel, and stream key, and how you will respond if an item needs to be removed or the feed needs to be stopped.

Test the workflow before depending on it

  1. Start with a non-public test event or the appropriate testing configuration for your channel. Confirm the script can read the intended rows and that API authorization works.
  2. Check the created broadcast in YouTube Studio. Confirm its title, scheduled start time, privacy status, and association with the intended stream.
  3. Start the encoder or playout system and verify that YouTube receives the feed. A successful API call creating a broadcast does not prove that video is being transmitted.
  4. Test a failed or delayed script run. Confirm that the log identifies the problem and a retry does not create duplicate broadcasts.
  5. Test your recovery procedure for an encoder interruption, a changed stream key, or an event that was not moved into the intended state. Do not treat a spreadsheet status as proof that the viewer-facing stream is live.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The event exists, but viewers see no video: The broadcast resource and the media feed are separate. Check that the encoder or playout system is transmitting to the correct server URL and stream key, and that the broadcast is bound to the intended stream.
  • A scheduled row was not processed at its exact time: Apps Script time-driven triggers may be randomized and are not precise playback schedulers. Check the trigger execution and process eligible rows on a recovery run; use the playout system, not the trigger, for content timing.
  • A run fails after another person edits the Sheet: Installable triggers execute as their creator. Check that account’s authorization and access rather than assuming the editor’s permissions are used.
  • A retry creates or risks creating a second event: Make processing idempotent. Record the created broadcast identity and status, then check them before issuing another insert request.
  • The feed stops after a credential change: If a channel owner or manager reset the stream key, update the encoder with the current stream details and confirm transmission resumes.
  • A scheduled event cannot be moved as expected: YouTube places state constraints on scheduled start and end time updates. Check the event’s current state and the API’s current requirements before changing it.
  • A long continuous stream is not archived as expected: YouTube’s encoder help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is a platform detail that can change; check current YouTube guidance for the feed length and archive behavior you need.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube channel rather than automating event metadata, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed.
