You can schedule a YouTube Live event in Studio, but scheduling alone does not start a broadcast. A video feed still has to be sent from a camera, phone, console, or encoder. For an encoder stream, YouTube’s documented flow is to start the encoder, wait for the preview, then click Go live. You can enable YouTube’s Auto-start setting to control starting from the encoder, but it does not turn on your computer or launch the encoder for you.
What “go live automatically” means on YouTube
A scheduled stream and a live broadcast are separate states. Scheduling creates an upcoming event that viewers can find and set a reminder for; it does not produce or send the video feed. YouTube’s Auto-start setting can let you start streaming from a connected encoder when enabled, but it does not wake a powered-off computer, open your streaming software, choose a source, or create a prerecorded program. YouTube’s scheduled-stream instructions and Auto-start settings help describe those separate steps.
So if you need a broadcast to begin at a precise time without anyone present, scheduling and Auto-start by themselves are not a complete unattended-start system. The device or cloud service supplying the feed must also be running and configured to transmit.
Check channel eligibility first
YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance says your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The general eligibility guidance also sets a minimum age of 16 to livestream. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements if the option is unavailable or you are setting up a channel for the first time; platform requirements can change.

Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- Open the live-stream manager. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live, then open Manage.
- Create the scheduled stream. Select Schedule stream. Choose whether to reuse settings from an earlier stream or create a new one.
- Enter event details. Set the title, privacy, date and time, and the other details shown in Studio. Confirm the time zone and event details before saving.
- Share the upcoming event. A scheduled event can appear as upcoming. Viewers can select Notify me to request a reminder; that reminder does not start your broadcast.
For the current Studio flow and how scheduled events work, see YouTube Help: Schedule a live stream.
Choose how you will send the video feed
YouTube supports webcam, mobile, encoder, and console livestreaming. Pick the method that matches the production rather than assuming every method can start unattended.

| Method | Best suited to | What to expect for automatic start |
|---|---|---|
| Webcam | A straightforward stream from a computer camera and microphone. | YouTube’s documented Auto-start and Auto-stop settings do not apply to webcam streams. |
| Mobile | Streaming from a phone or tablet. | YouTube’s settings documentation includes mobile streams in its Auto-start/Auto-stop scope; it does not mean the phone will open the app or begin transmitting on its own. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, overlays, multiple sources, or a more controlled production using streaming software or hardware. | Auto-start can control starting from the encoder when enabled, but the encoder and feed still need to be running. |
| Console | Broadcasting gameplay directly from a supported console workflow. | Do not assume the encoder Auto-start instructions apply; follow the console’s own broadcast workflow. |
YouTube describes professional-grade hardware encoders as suitable for higher-production events, while also noting that expensive equipment is not necessary to get started. See YouTube’s overview of streaming methods.
Set up an encoder stream and its start behavior
- Open the scheduled stream in Live Control Room. From Studio’s live-stream manager, select the scheduled event you created.
- Copy the connection details into your encoder. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder’s YouTube or custom-stream settings. YouTube describes the stream key as password-like access information: keep it private, do not include it in public screenshots, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed. The connection details are shown in the event’s stream setup. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Decide whether to enable Auto-start. In the event’s stream settings, turn on Auto-start if you want starting from the encoder to start the YouTube broadcast without a separate Studio start action. YouTube’s help says that with the setting on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder. The setting does not launch or configure the encoder.
- Start the encoder and verify the incoming preview. Select the correct scheduled event and source in your encoder, then start sending the feed. Wait until the preview appears in Live Control Room.
- Use the standard Go live control if Auto-start is off. After the preview appears, click Go live in Live Control Room. This is the documented encoder workflow; scheduling alone does not replace this control.
The Auto-start setting is documented for encoder or mobile streams, not webcam streams. You can check the current setting behavior in YouTube’s live stream settings help.

Prepare and test before the scheduled time
- Allow setup time. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder two hours before a livestream and starting encoders at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. These are operational recommendations, not guarantees of a successful start. Details are in YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Test the complete path. Check that the selected source has picture and sound, the encoder is connected to the intended scheduled event, and the Live Control Room preview appears before relying on the event.
- Check your content rights. Use video, music, and other material you are authorized to broadcast. A scheduled event or automatic start setting does not bypass YouTube’s copyright rules or live-stream restrictions.
- Keep a local recording when the stream matters. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local archive backup. Archiving behavior is not a substitute for recording a copy yourself. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
Troubleshooting a scheduled stream that does not start
- The event exists, but viewers see no live video. The event page is only scheduled. Start the camera, phone, console, or encoder feed; for an encoder, wait for the preview and click Go live unless Auto-start is enabled and functioning as configured.
- Starting the encoder does not start the YouTube broadcast. Confirm Auto-start is on for the scheduled event, verify that the encoder is sending to that event’s stream key, and check for the preview in Live Control Room. If Auto-start is off, use the Studio Go live control.
- No preview appears. Check that the encoder is online, the correct source is selected, and the YouTube server URL and stream key match the scheduled event. Re-enter the key privately if necessary; do not post it for troubleshooting.
- The Auto-start option is missing or does not apply. The documented setting excludes webcam streams. Confirm which broadcast method is active and consult YouTube’s current stream settings instructions.
- You cannot access livestreaming. Check channel verification, recent restrictions, and the age requirement against YouTube’s eligibility guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud

It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams at the quality uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast a camera feed. Try StreamNeo’s free first day.
