YouTube scheduling creates the event and its watch page; it does not send videos from your NAS. To livestream a NAS playlist, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, then use an encoder to read the NAS files and send their audio and video to YouTube. The encoder can run on a computer on your network, or—if your exact NAS supports the software and workload—on the NAS itself. Test the complete setup before relying on it unattended.
What you need: an event and an encoder
Think of the setup as two connected parts: YouTube provides the scheduled Live event, while an encoder supplies the actual feed. The encoder connects to the event using YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Your NAS is the media source; its ability to store or play videos does not by itself mean it can encode and publish a playlist as YouTube Live.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current requirements page says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check eligibility in Studio because platform requirements can change. YouTube Live streaming requirements.
- Videos stored on the NAS and accessible to the machine or process running the encoder.
- An encoder that can send the playlist’s video and audio to YouTube. Use a computer on the network for the most straightforward local arrangement; NAS-hosted encoding depends on the particular model, software support, codecs, and capacity.
- A reliable network upload connection and a way to keep the encoder process running for the intended duration.
If the video is prerecorded and you do not need a live feed or live-chat experience, consider whether a YouTube Premiere meets the goal instead. It is a different format, not a way to make a NAS playlist into a Live encoder feed.
Choose where the encoder runs
| Workflow | Best fit | Main trade-off | Verify before relying on it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer runs encoder; NAS stores files | Local control, existing hardware, scenes or overlays | The computer and network must remain available | NAS access and permissions, codec compatibility, playlist order and looping, encoder scheduling and recovery |
| NAS runs encoder software | Only when the exact NAS model supports the required software and workload | Model, CPU, transcoding ability, packages, and containers vary | Current model documentation, codec support, process supervision, and upload capacity |
| Cloud prerecorded-stream service | Avoiding an always-on home encoder | Media is uploaded to an external service; capabilities and terms vary | Playlist limits, scheduling, YouTube integration, retention, price, and service terms |
For example, Synology DSM 7.2 Video Station documentation describes managing NAS media, playlists, and playback to browsers or devices, but does not establish a folder-playlist-to-YouTube-Live encoder workflow. Synology says Video Station is unavailable in DSM 7.2.2. QNAP’s Video Station tutorial likewise describes organizing videos and streaming to local-network media devices, not publishing a YouTube Live feed. Check current support for your model and software before treating either player as an encoder. Synology Video Station specifications; QNAP Video Station tutorial.

Synology Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast feature is a separate camera-feed use case: its documentation describes selecting a camera and entering a YouTube RTMP path and key, with H.264 in that context. It is not evidence that Surveillance Station streams arbitrary media-folder playlists. Synology Live Broadcast documentation.
Schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create > Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, open Manage > Schedule Stream and set up the event’s title, visibility, and start time. YouTube’s scheduled-stream workflow creates an event viewers can find and receive reminders for; you can share its URL. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
- In the event’s stream settings, obtain the stream URL and key for your encoder. YouTube describes a stream key as the destination and credential used to accept the encoder’s feed. Keep it private: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
- Configure the encoder to send the NAS playlist to the event. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted RTMP option; reveal the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room and copy it and the key into the encoder. YouTube RTMPS instructions.
- Start the encoder and confirm the feed appears in Live Control Room preview. For a scheduled-event workflow, review the preview and use Go live in Live Control Room when ready. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings can automate aspects of starting and ending an event, but they do not replace an encoder sending the content. YouTube stream settings.
HLS is another option only when the encoder and codecs support it. YouTube’s HLS instructions specify TS segments of 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and note higher latency. Those are HLS requirements, not settings to apply to an ordinary RTMPS setup. YouTube HLS instructions.

Connect the NAS playlist to the encoder
Make the NAS folder available to the encoder host using the network-share method supported by your NAS and operating system. Confirm that the account running the encoder can read every file. Then configure a playlist or file pipeline in the encoder to play those files in the intended order and send their audio and video to the YouTube event’s URL and key.
The exact steps for building a playlist differ by encoder, version, operating system, and NAS. The available YouTube guidance documents the connection to the event, but does not establish universal OBS or FFmpeg playlist commands, automatic NAS folder discovery, or loop and recovery behavior. Treat those as implementation details to validate in your own setup rather than assuming a NAS player or encoder offers one-click scheduling.

- Check that every file opens and that its audio and video are compatible with the encoder’s output path.
- Confirm the playlist order, what happens at the end, and whether playback repeats or stops.
- Test the precise scheduled-event handoff, including what viewers see if the encoder starts early or the event is not yet live.
- Do not put the stream key in a public script, repository, or shared log. Restrict access to the encoder configuration that contains it.
Test the whole path before the scheduled time
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not measured guarantees. Its streaming tips also advise checking the Live Control Room preview, event access through channel and watch pages and on mobile, local archives, and audio/video quality. YouTube streaming tips.
- Run a private or unlisted test stream where appropriate, and confirm the correct scheduled event is selected.
- Verify the NAS is reachable and the encoder account has permission to read the media folder.
- Watch enough of the playlist to verify file order, transitions, sound, picture, and whether it loops or ends as intended.
- Confirm YouTube receives the feed and that the preview and audio are correct before using the scheduled event’s Go live control.
- Check that the event can be opened from its watch page and on a phone.
- If the stream must be unattended, test the failure cases you care about: a NAS disconnect, network interruption, encoder restart, and playback reaching the end of the list. Confirm how your encoder and event behave after each interruption.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube event exists, but no picture or sound appears | The event is scheduled, but the encoder is not sending a feed, or it is configured for a different destination | Start the encoder; verify its URL and key against the selected event; check Live Control Room preview |
| Encoder cannot open playlist files | The NAS share is unavailable, permissions are missing, or the process runs under a different account | Test access as the encoder’s actual user; verify the NAS is online and the share path is correct |
| Playlist stops or repeats unexpectedly | End-of-list and loop behavior depend on the encoder’s playlist configuration | Test the full list and its end behavior before scheduling; configure the desired repeat or stop behavior in the encoder |
| The scheduled stream does not go live when expected | The encoder feed has not arrived, or the event handoff still needs action | Check the preview and the event’s auto-start/auto-stop settings; use the documented Go live flow when applicable |
| Stream drops during unattended playback | The encoder, NAS, or network may have stopped or lost connectivity | Test restart and recovery behavior for the actual encoder and NAS; do not assume YouTube scheduling restarts a stopped encoder |
| Key or connection is rejected | The encoder may be using the wrong event’s key or URL, or an incorrect protocol endpoint | Copy the current event’s details from Live Control Room; use the RTMPS endpoint if configured for RTMPS |
