These are separate steps: scheduling creates the event, but it does not start FFmpeg or make the broadcast live. At the scheduled time, start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and click Go live.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with livestreaming enabled and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can remain running and connected to the internet throughout the stream.
- The video files you want to play, in the intended order.
- The scheduled event’s server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it.
YouTube’s encoder workflow requires entering the server URL and stream key in your encoder settings. Interface labels and available ingestion settings can change, so use the values shown for your event in Studio rather than reusing an old key or assuming a particular server address. Schedule the YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, open Manage and select Schedule stream.
- Choose to reuse previous settings or create a new scheduled event, then enter the event details and schedule it.
- Open the scheduled event’s stream settings and note its server URL and stream key. Keep the event open or store these details securely for FFmpeg setup.
Scheduling gives viewers an event they can find and share, and allows promotion and reminders. It does not launch the encoder. You still need to start FFmpeg and take the event live in Live Control Room. YouTube Help: Schedule a live stream.
Build the concat playlist file
Create a plain-text file listing each video in playback order. Save it beside the videos as playlist.ffconcat:

file 'part-02.mp4'The ffconcat version 1.0 line must be the first line exactly for FFmpeg to recognize the format automatically. Each file line names the next input. Relative paths are resolved from the playlist file’s location. The concat demuxer reads the listed files consecutively. FFmpeg Formats: concat demuxer.
Paths, spaces, and the safety default
Keep the playlist and media in a straightforward directory and use relative paths where practical. The demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1, which rejects paths and directives it considers unsafe; absolute paths and some special characters may be rejected. If you use paths containing spaces or other special characters, quote and escape them according to the concat file syntax rather than assuming shell quoting rules apply inside the playlist.

You can explicitly set -safe 0 when the playlist requires paths that the default rejects, but this relaxes a safety check. Only do that for a playlist you control and trust. Do not use it to process untrusted playlist files. FFmpeg Formats: concat demuxer.
Check whether the files can be concatenated without re-encoding
The concat demuxer joins media at the packet level, so the files need compatible stream layouts. FFmpeg’s requirement is: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” In practice, compare the files’ audio and video streams, codecs, time bases, and stream arrangement before relying on direct concatenation. Duration metadata matters too. The demuxer adjusts timestamps globally; if streams in a file have different lengths, gaps can result. Inaccurate or missing duration information can cause artifacts or timestamp problems. A duration directive in the playlist can override a file’s duration when you know the correct value, but it is not a fix for mismatched codecs or stream layouts. FFmpeg Formats: concat demuxer.
Choose the method that matches your media

Configure FFmpeg and connect it to the event
There is no universal FFmpeg command that can be guaranteed to work with arbitrary media, FFmpeg builds, and current YouTube ingestion settings. YouTube’s guidance establishes the required encoder details—the event’s server URL and stream key—but your command must also match the source codecs, output format, and settings displayed for your event. - Confirm the concat playlist works locally and that its listed files expose compatible streams.
- Build an FFmpeg command for your media and installed FFmpeg version. Use the concat playlist as the input, select or encode audio and video as needed, and configure the output for the protocol and settings YouTube currently shows for the scheduled event.
- Supply the event’s server URL and stream key in the output configuration. Avoid putting a real key in a shared script, screenshot, public post, or command history accessible to others.
- Start FFmpeg early enough to confirm that it is sending a feed and YouTube has received it. Check FFmpeg’s output for input, timestamp, connection, or encoding errors.
The official material cited here does not provide a tested, universal FFmpeg command or prescribe a particular bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or looping command for every setup. Follow the current encoder guidance shown in Studio and adapt the command to your files; do not copy a command that assumes different codecs, paths, or ingestion settings.

Go live at the scheduled time
- Start FFmpeg so it sends the playlist output to the scheduled event.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the stream preview to appear.
- Click Go live to begin the broadcast for viewers.
YouTube’s instructions explicitly place the preview and Go live action after the encoder is started. A scheduled event alone does not start the FFmpeg process or publish its feed. YouTube Help: Schedule a live stream.
Looping the playlist and rehearsing
If the sequence needs to repeat, configure repetition in the FFmpeg input workflow for the version you are running; do not assume that listing files once makes them repeat. The concat demuxer documentation describes playlist mechanics, but the sources here do not establish a YouTube-specific looping command that works for every FFmpeg build and media set.
Rehearse with the exact playlist, files, event settings, and command you intend to use. That gives you a chance to catch path errors, incompatible streams, bad duration metadata, and encoder-setting problems before the scheduled broadcast. A rehearsal is practical preparation, not a guarantee that a different file set or later configuration will behave identically.
Recurring events: reusing a stream or separating them
For channels managing recurring broadcasts, YouTube’s API distinguishes the liveBroadcast—the viewer-facing event—from the liveStream resource used for encoder delivery settings. The API documentation describes reusing one stream configuration for events at different times; in that arrangement, only one such event is live at a time. Separate stream resources can make sense when shows may overlap or need separate encoder configurations. This is API-level context, not a requirement to use the API for a Studio-scheduled event. Troubleshooting
FFmpeg rejects the playlist or cannot open a file
- Likely cause: The header is missing, misspelled, or not the first line; a path is wrong; or the default safe-path checks reject it.
- Fix: Put
ffconcat version 1.0on the first line exactly, verify each path relative to the playlist, and correct quoting or escaping. Use-safe 0only for a trusted playlist that genuinely needs paths rejected by the default.
The concat input reports stream or timestamp errors
- Likely cause: Files have different stream layouts, codecs, time bases, or unreliable duration metadata.
- Fix: Compare the files’ streams and durations. Use the concat filter with re-encoding when the inputs are not suitable for demuxer concatenation; correct known duration issues with playlist duration directives only when you have accurate values.
YouTube does not show a preview
- Likely cause: FFmpeg is not running, the output connection failed, or the server URL or stream key does not match the scheduled event.
- Fix: Check FFmpeg’s output and connection, then verify the current event’s encoder details in Studio. Do not rely on an old stream key.
The event is scheduled but viewers cannot see a live broadcast
- Likely cause: The event was scheduled, but the encoder has not started or the event has not been taken live.
- Fix: Start FFmpeg, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and click Go live.
