How to Schedule a YouTube Livestream to Start Automatically After a Server Reboot

A YouTube event and an encoder must both be configured: schedule the stream, launch OBS when the server boots, and test whether YouTube still requires Go live.

Scheduling a YouTube livestream creates the event; it does not, by itself, make your encoder launch after a server reboots. For an OBS setup, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, configure OBS to start streaming when it launches, and arrange for OBS to launch at boot—on a Linux server, that usually means an enabled systemd service. YouTube’s scheduled-stream instructions may still require you to click Go live; automatic encoder start is a separate setting, so test the complete workflow before relying on it for a public broadcast.

What has to happen after a reboot

There are two separate systems to configure: YouTube must have a scheduled event ready to receive the feed, and the server must launch an encoder that sends that feed. A scheduled event does not start OBS, and starting OBS does not necessarily publish the event without an additional YouTube action.

  1. YouTube: Create the scheduled livestream and configure its encoder settings.
  2. Server: Launch the encoder after reboot and ensure its media, scene, network, and required user session are available.
  3. Go-live behavior: Confirm whether YouTube’s Auto-start setting lets the encoder start the event without a manual click. The standard scheduled encoder workflow describes checking the preview and clicking Go live, so do not assume scheduling alone removes that step. See YouTube’s encoder workflow and live stream settings.

Use an unlisted or private test event to verify the exact behavior of your channel, encoder, and YouTube settings before depending on an unattended public start.

Schedule the event and configure YouTube ingest

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage, then schedule a stream. Set its title, privacy, date and time, and other event details. Scheduling can create an upcoming watch page where viewers may opt in to notifications.
  2. Open the scheduled event in Live Control Room and note its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.”
  3. In OBS, enter the URL and key in the stream settings for the scheduled event. Use the RTMPS URL if your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends RTMPS as the encrypted RTMP option. Check YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance if the connection fails.
  4. In the event’s stream settings, review Auto-start and Auto-stop. Auto-start concerns whether encoder activity can start the event; it is distinct from scheduling and from launching OBS at boot. Verify its effect with your test event rather than assuming it overrides every step in YouTube’s scheduled-stream workflow.
  5. Keep the key out of public scripts, source control, screenshots, shared command history, and logs. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration.

Make OBS start streaming when it launches

OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter. It tells OBS to begin streaming when the application launches; it does not configure YouTube’s event, guarantee an available desktop session, or make a scheduled stream public without the applicable YouTube start behavior. See the OBS launch parameters documentation.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Windows desktop or server

Configure the Windows startup mechanism you use to launch OBS to run OBS with the --startstreaming argument. OBS’s documentation also notes a working-directory consideration for Windows scheduled or automated launches; follow its launch-parameter instructions for the method you choose. Confirm that the account running OBS has access to the saved profile, scenes, media, and any required devices. A process launched before an interactive desktop session is ready may not have the sources or environment your setup expects.

Linux host using systemd

For Linux, use a service appropriate to the actual host and OBS installation, then enable it so systemd arranges to start it at boot. The exact unit cannot be universal: the executable path, account, environment, session/display access, sources, and network dependencies differ between machines.

  • systemctl enable arranges for a unit to start during boot; enabling is not the same as starting it immediately.
  • A restart policy such as Restart=always governs what systemd does after the service process exits. It is not a substitute for enabling the service at boot, and systemd documents cases where a restart is not applied, including an intentional stop by the service manager.
  • Consider whether OBS needs a graphical user session, GPU access, audio devices, or capture devices that are unavailable to a boot-time service. Resolve those host-specific requirements instead of assuming OBS will run headlessly because systemd launched it.

Consult the systemctl manual for enablement and the systemd.service manual for restart behavior. These documents establish the relevant systemd controls, not a tested, universal OBS unit file.

Choose the launch setup that fits the host

Setup What to verify Typical constraint
OBS launched in a desktop session Startup launch uses --startstreaming; the logged-in account can access the OBS profile, scenes, and media. Automatic launch may depend on a user session being available after reboot.
OBS managed as a Linux systemd service The unit is enabled for boot; the service account, environment, sources, and network are ready; restart behavior suits the process. A boot-time service may lack the graphical session, GPU, or capture devices OBS expects.
RTMP ingest The encoder accepts the YouTube ingest URL and stream key. It is not the encrypted RTMPS option.
RTMPS ingest The encoder supports RTMPS and uses the corresponding YouTube URL and settings. Compatibility depends on the encoder configuration; consult YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

For video output, use YouTube’s recommendations for the specific resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate rather than choosing one bitrate for every stream. The YouTube encoder settings table lists recommended combinations.

Test the reboot and scheduled start end to end

  1. Create a private or unlisted scheduled test event with the intended settings.
  2. Confirm OBS has the correct event’s URL and stream key, and that the intended scene or media is ready to load after reboot.
  3. Reboot the actual host. Verify that the configured startup mechanism launches OBS and that the encoder begins sending a feed.
  4. Open the intended event in Live Control Room. Check the preview and stream health, then determine whether the event starts through Auto-start or still needs a manual Go live action.
  5. Check both video and audio, and confirm the scheduled event—not a different event or key—is receiving the feed.
  6. Repeat the test after any change to the OBS profile, service unit, login behavior, network setup, event settings, or stream key.

YouTube advises setting up the encoder in advance, previewing the feed, and monitoring the stream. Its live-stream tips recommend setting up at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand. These are operational recommendations, not guarantees of a successful unattended start. See YouTube live streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • OBS did not open after reboot: Check that the startup task or systemd unit is configured for boot, enabled where applicable, and launching the correct executable under the intended account.
  • OBS opened but did not stream: Confirm the launch includes --startstreaming, the profile has the correct service and event credentials, and OBS can access its saved configuration.
  • OBS is streaming but the scheduled event is not live: Check that the correct event is open, inspect its preview, and verify Auto-start behavior. You may still need to click Go live in Live Control Room.
  • The feed is black, silent, or missing media: Check whether the scene’s files and devices are present and accessible to the boot-launched account. A desktop session, GPU, or capture device may not be available in a service context.
  • systemd does not restart OBS: Check the service status and logs, the configured restart policy, and whether the stop was an intentional action for which systemd does not apply that policy.
  • YouTube rejects the connection: Check encoder compatibility with the selected ingest protocol, URL, and stream key. If using RTMPS, follow YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting.
  • The wrong feed reaches the event: Verify the scheduled event’s stream key in both YouTube and OBS. Reset an exposed or incorrect key in Live Control Room and update OBS.
