You can schedule the livestream in YouTube Studio, but YouTube does not provide a setting that switches to a backup playlist when a media file is missing. Set up that content fallback in your encoder or automation software, then test the missing-file case before the event. YouTube’s backup encoder and HLS backup server features address a different problem: keeping a feed reaching YouTube if an encoder or ingestion path fails.
What YouTube scheduling does—and does not—do
YouTube Studio lets you schedule a stream and connect an encoder with a stream URL and key. It does not select replacement content when a file referenced by the encoder is absent or unreadable. You must configure that behavior in the encoder or a compatible automation layer, and the result depends on that software and its configuration.
Keep the two kinds of fallback separate:
- Content fallback: switch from missing or unusable media to a backup clip, scene, or playlist. Configure and verify this in the encoder or automation software.
- Encoder or ingestion failover: keep a feed reaching YouTube if the primary encoder or its network path fails. YouTube documents backup encoder testing and, for HLS, a Backup server URL. Neither feature substitutes for missing content.
A backup encoder could continue sending a feed that still contains the same missing-media problem. Conversely, a content fallback could work while the encoder or connection remains a single point of failure.
Schedule the stream in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open Manage and choose Schedule stream. Reuse settings or create a new scheduled stream, then set its title, description, visibility, and other metadata. YouTube says a scheduled stream may appear in subscribers’ feeds as upcoming, where subscribers can choose a reminder: Manage live stream settings.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key as private: YouTube describes stream keys as credentials that tell the encoder where to send its feed. Use the settings for the scheduled stream rather than an unrelated key or destination. See Create a live stream with an encoder.
- In the encoder, prepare the intended primary media and the fallback content or behavior. Confirm that the machine or service running the encoder can access every media path. Do not assume that a playlist will skip a missing item or start a backup playlist automatically.
- Run a rehearsal that reproduces the failure: use a test copy of the media, then remove it, rename it, or otherwise make it unavailable. Check the actual video and audio output and revise the fallback configuration if needed. Test absent, unreadable, and moved-file cases if those could occur during your event.
- Follow YouTube’s preparation guidance: set up encoders at least two hours before the event and start them at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Wait for the Live Control Room preview and inspect it before selecting Go live. These are YouTube’s published preparation intervals, not guarantees that a particular encoder will recover from missing media. See YouTube live streaming tips – Computer.
- At airtime, confirm that the preview has the expected picture and sound, then select Go live. Monitor the event, and when finished, end the event in YouTube and stop the encoder.
Configure and verify the missing-file fallback
The exact steps depend on your encoder and automation setup. YouTube’s scheduling controls do not define a universal rule for what an encoder should do when a playlist entry is missing. Decide what viewers should see—such as a designated fallback clip, a holding scene, or a manually selected item—and implement that behavior in the software that plays or schedules the media.

- Check the media paths from the environment that will run the stream. A file visible on your editing computer may not be available to a remote encoder or service.
- Use copies for failure tests so you do not damage your broadcast media library. Test missing, unreadable, and moved files, and verify both sound and picture in the output.
- Record the encoder version, operating system, source type, media paths, and any automation or plugin version used in a working configuration. Re-test after changes that could affect playback.
- If the fallback is manual, make sure someone can select it promptly and knows how to confirm the result in the preview. Do not describe a manual recovery as automatic.
Using an OBS playlist
OBS documents a VLC Video source that can play video and other media in a playlist, with options for Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist. OBS also documents Media Source for individual media files. These features establish playlist playback; they do not promise that a missing playlist entry will trigger a chosen backup playlist.
To use the VLC Video source, VLC must be installed for the source to appear. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Add the source, configure its playlist and available loop or shuffle options, then rehearse the missing-file cases on the same system and configuration you intend to broadcast with. If you require conditional switching to a particular fallback playlist, verify that behavior in your own OBS version and setup; the documented playlist controls alone do not establish it. Include any automation or plugin in the rehearsal and test the actual viewer output.
Test YouTube encoder failover separately
If you also need protection from encoder or network failure, configure a separate backup encoder or supported backup ingestion path. That is independent of the missing-media fallback. YouTube’s preparation guide recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet, then confirming that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. Test this before an event; it does not test whether your content fallback works. For HLS, YouTube documents a Backup server URL in its HLS ingestion guide.

Troubleshoot common failure cases
- The stream is scheduled, but no feed appears: check that the encoder is using the scheduled stream’s URL and key, that it is running, and that the Live Control Room preview receives a feed before you go live.
- The playlist stops or shows an error when a file is missing: do not assume YouTube will replace it. Check the encoder’s documented behavior and configure a fallback in the encoder or automation layer; reproduce the failure in rehearsal.
- The fallback works locally but not on the broadcast system: confirm that the runtime environment can access the media path and that the file is readable there. Paths on a different computer or service may not resolve.
- The OBS VLC Video source is unavailable: install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- The backup encoder does not take over: verify the backup path’s configuration and test it using YouTube’s prescribed failover exercise. A backup encoder is not a remedy for missing media if it sends the same content.
- The preview looks or sounds wrong: delay going live, inspect the encoder output and media selection, and verify the fallback again. The preview is the opportunity to catch a bad feed before viewers see it.
