You can schedule YouTube live mid-roll ads while keeping the broadcast live: in YouTube Studio, turn monetization on and choose Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual under live ad settings. Scheduled mode lets you set a repeating interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. That interval is not an exact clock-time guarantee, and YouTube does not guarantee that an ad will run for every viewer.
What “without interrupting” means on YouTube Live
An ad break does not necessarily stop the broadcast itself. YouTube says viewers who are not served an ad continue watching the live stream; viewers who receive an ad can rejoin when it ends or skip it. So the channel can stay live, but you cannot promise every viewer an uninterrupted view of the content. Ads may not serve at all.
YouTube Help puts the intended behavior this way: “YouTube shows mid-roll ads to viewers at natural breakpoints during a live stream.” Its guidance also says, “If no ad runs, viewers will continue to watch your live stream.”
How to turn on and schedule live mid-roll ads
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Start a stream from the Stream tab, or schedule one from Manage.
- Open Edit → Monetization and switch monetization to On.
- Under live ad settings, choose Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual. For Scheduled, choose an interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes.
- Save or apply the settings in Live Control Room. For a stream that is already live, use the live controls to insert manual breaks or adjust the available ad settings.
For future streams, monetized channels without rights management can set channel-level mid-roll defaults in Live Control Room settings. YouTube’s help page says the default is On with automatic medium. It also says channels with rights management currently do not have channel-level settings. Interface labels and controls can change, so confirm the options shown in your Studio account.

Choose the ad mode that fits the stream

Pause automatic ads before an important moment
If you use Automatic mode, select Delay ads in Live Control Room before a high-value moment. This pauses automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. YouTube displays a five-second countdown before automatic ads resume. Manually placed breaks still display during the delay, so avoid inserting one if you are trying to protect that moment from a manual mid-roll as well.
Side-by-side ads and control hardware
YouTube describes side-by-side mid-rolls as an option that can show an ad next to the stream with less disruption on eligible streams. It is not guaranteed for every stream. YouTube also says streams with captions turned on will not show side-by-side ads.

For manual insertion, YouTube documents using an Elgato Stream Deck with its YouTube plugin. It is optional hardware, not a requirement for automatic or interval-based scheduled ads, and it does not schedule recurring intervals.
What the published revenue figure does—and does not—say
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour in January 2024. The comparison covered channels that turned on live automatic mid-roll ads versus channels that did not, across 207 countries. It is a historical comparative average, not a forecast or promised result for an individual channel.

Keep a continuous stream running separately from ad settings
YouTube’s ad controls determine how mid-rolls are offered; they do not create a special 24/7 broadcast mode. YouTube’s stream-settings guidance says scheduled streams can appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds, where viewers can opt into notifications. It discusses encoder and mobile streams, not webcam streams. A scheduled ad interval should therefore be treated as a repeating setting—not a promise of an ad at an exact time or to every viewer.

Troubleshooting ad-break expectations
- No ad appeared at the scheduled interval: the interval does not guarantee delivery. YouTube says ads are not guaranteed to serve.
- Automatic ads are close to a key game moment: use Delay ads before the moment; it applies to automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes, not manual insertions.
- No manual ads are appearing: check monetization is On and insert a mid-roll while live. YouTube says no mid-roll will be served if you insert none.
- A viewer reports the stream stopped during an ad: distinguish the broadcast from that viewer’s playback. Viewers who receive an ad can rejoin after it ends or is skipped; viewers not served an ad continue watching.
- Side-by-side ads are absent: this format is limited to eligible streams, and streams with captions turned on will not show them.
- Channel-level defaults are unavailable: YouTube says channels with rights management currently do not have channel-level mid-roll settings.
