YouTube’s event scheduler does not choose, advance, or loop the files. For a local setup, OBS Studio’s VLC Video source can play a playlist in order and repeat it; for episode-by-episode clock-time scheduling, you need a separate automation system that explicitly supports it.
First, know what you are scheduling
There are two separate schedules: when the YouTube broadcast starts, and which episode plays next. YouTube Studio handles the broadcast event. An encoder such as OBS, or a hosted streaming service, supplies the video and controls its playback.
- Start time: Schedule an upcoming live event in YouTube Studio so viewers can find it and, where eligible, receive reminders.
- Episode order and looping: Set this in the encoder or hosted service that feeds YouTube.
- Exact episode start times: YouTube’s event scheduler does not schedule individual files at specified times. The reviewed OBS playlist documentation describes ordered, shuffled, and looped playback, not time-of-day automation.
If you need custom event automation, YouTube’s Live Streaming API separates the scheduled broadcast from the transmitted stream; it does not provide episode-level playlist scheduling. See the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation and liveBroadcast resource documentation.
Prepare the episodes and confirm you can stream them
Check rights before building the playlist
Cartoons are not free to rebroadcast just because they are available online or intended for children. Get the necessary rights for both the video and audio. YouTube says copyright strikes or a match with another copyrighted live broadcast can result in live-streaming restrictions or loss of access. Review YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions before going live.

Choose files and audience settings
For a local OBS playlist, put the authorized episode files somewhere the computer can access continuously. OBS documents support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Test every file’s picture and audio in advance; a playlist that advances correctly is not useful if an episode is silent, incorrectly framed, or unreadable by the source.
Set the audience designation accurately. If the stream is designated “made for kids,” YouTube restricts or disables features including live chat, live chat replay, and reminder notifications for upcoming streams. Personalized ads are disabled, though contextual ads may be shown. Plan the stream’s interaction features around the designation rather than choosing it to gain or avoid features.

Run an ordered, looping playlist with OBS
This method keeps the playback and encoder on your computer. It is suitable when you want episodes to run in a fixed sequence and repeat the whole list, and you can leave the machine and internet connection available for the broadcast.
- Install VLC and OBS Studio. The VLC Video source appears in OBS only when VLC is installed. Use media files stored locally or on storage that stays connected.
- Create a scene and add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will be sent to YouTube. Add the episode files to its playlist in the order you want them played.
- Set playback behavior. Leave shuffle off for a predictable sequence. Turn on Loop Playlist if you want the full list to repeat after the last episode. OBS documentation says shuffle is off and looping is on by default, but check the source settings rather than relying on defaults.
- Check the scene and playback. Confirm the video fits the canvas, audio is audible, and the source advances to the next episode in the intended order. Let the playlist run through a transition before announcing the stream. OBS’s playlist controls do not by themselves guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
- Schedule the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live, choose Manage, then Schedule Stream. Reuse settings or create a new event, and set visibility and audience details deliberately.
- Connect OBS to the event. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password; do not publish or share it.
- Start the encoder and go live. Start streaming from OBS, wait for the preview in YouTube Live Control Room, then select Go live for the scheduled broadcast. Check that the intended episode is playing and that the feed remains connected.
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that an indefinitely running feed will be archived as one video, so make a separate plan if you need to preserve episodes or the broadcast. When you need episodes to start at exact times
An ordered, looping playlist means the next episode starts when the current file ends; it does not guarantee that an episode begins at a chosen wall-clock time. The reviewed OBS documentation does not describe time-of-day scheduling for individual playlist items. If, for example, one episode must begin at 8 p.m. regardless of the previous episode’s runtime, choose a playback system that explicitly documents timed scheduling or build and test a separate automation workflow. Do not assume that scheduling a YouTube event creates that capability.
Choose between a local encoder and a hosted stream

Troubleshoot common playlist-stream problems
- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source list again.
- Episodes play in the wrong order: Turn shuffle off and review the playlist order in the source properties.
- The list stops after the last episode: Enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat.
- YouTube does not show the feed: Check that OBS is using the correct stream URL and key for the scheduled event, then confirm the encoder is started and the Live Control Room preview appears before going live.
- The broadcast is restricted or interrupted: Check YouTube Studio for a policy or copyright notice. YouTube identifies copyright strikes and matches with other copyrighted live broadcasts as possible causes of live-stream restrictions.
- A viewer cannot use chat or reminders: Check the stream’s audience designation and the feature limitations YouTube applies to made-for-kids content.
