That sets a cadence for available ad breaks, not a guarantee that every viewer will see an ad at each interval. YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve.
Set a scheduled mid-roll interval
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Start a stream from the Stream tab, or schedule one from Manage.
- Open Edit → Monetization and make sure monetization is on.
- Choose Scheduled under the live ad settings, then select 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes between ad breaks.
YouTube’s live monetization guidance describes these controls for live streams generally; it does not document a separate scheduler or exception for 24/7 streams. Check the settings on the particular stream, since channel defaults or stream configurations may differ. YouTube’s controls and interface labels can change.
What the three live ad modes do
Automatic
YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls. It selects breakpoints and offers low, medium, and high frequency settings, so viewers may receive ads at different times. YouTube says the mode includes measures intended to limit disruption for members, temporarily pause mid-rolls for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snooze mid-rolls for everyone during high engagement.
Scheduled
Scheduled mode sets a regular interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. It is a configured cadence, not a promise that an ad will play for each viewer at each interval: YouTube states, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” When no ad runs, the viewer continues watching the stream.

Manual
With manual mid-rolls, you insert each break while live. If you do not insert a break, no mid-roll will be served. YouTube cautions that earnings potential may be lower with scheduled or manual mid-rolls than with automatic mode; that is platform guidance, not a prediction for an individual channel.
Choose a mode for a continuous stream
- Choose Scheduled if you want a regular configured interval without inserting every break yourself.
- Choose Automatic if you prefer YouTube to select breakpoints and adjust delivery around engagement signals.
- Choose Manual if you want to decide when each break happens and can reliably manage the live control.
For a 24/7 channel, weigh predictability against interruption: recurring ad slots can fall during important content, while automatic mode may place breaks at different times for different viewers. The available official guidance does not specify a special 24/7 restart behavior, maximum duration, or separate ad workflow.

Reduce interruptions during important moments
In automatic mode, use Delay ads at the top right of Live Control Room when you need to protect an important moment. YouTube says this delays mid-rolls for 10 minutes and displays a five-second countdown before ads resume. Manually placed mid-rolls still display during that delay, so Delay ads does not suppress manual breaks.
Eligible streams may show side-by-side mid-roll ads next to the live stream. YouTube’s help guidance says streams with captions turned on will not show side-by-side ads.

Set channel defaults and verify the stream
Monetized channels without rights management can set channel-level mid-roll defaults for future live streams. YouTube says channels with rights management currently do not have channel-level settings. Even when a default exists, confirm the monetization choice on the stream you are about to run.
YouTube’s live monetization guidance also reports an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels with live automatic mid-rolls enabled compared with channels without the feature, averaged across 207 countries. This is YouTube’s January 2024 comparison, not a guarantee of results for any channel.

Optional manual control with a Stream Deck
YouTube’s guidance names an option to insert ads using an Elgato Stream Deck by downloading the YouTube plugin. This is an optional control for manually triggered breaks; it is not required to choose a scheduled interval in Studio.
