You can use cron to start local streaming scripts at India-local times, but cron schedules commands—not YouTube broadcasts. First prepare or schedule each broadcast in YouTube Studio, then configure an encoder such as FFmpeg with that broadcast’s server URL and stream key. If by “playlist” you mean a YouTube video playlist rather than local media files, cron and FFmpeg do not by themselves turn it into a live broadcast.
Understand the two schedules—and what “playlist” means
This workflow has two separate parts: YouTube’s broadcast setup and your Ubuntu machine’s command schedule. YouTube Studio prepares a live event; cron starts a local process at a chosen time. Starting FFmpeg does not necessarily make a scheduled broadcast live automatically: YouTube’s documented encoder workflow includes checking the preview in Live Control Room and selecting “Go live.” For a fully unattended setup, you must decide how broadcast creation and the transition to live are handled, rather than assuming cron performs those steps.
Local media playlist
If “playlist” means a sequence of video files stored on the Ubuntu machine, FFmpeg can join them before or as part of encoding. The right concat method depends on whether the files have compatible formats and whether you need to re-encode them.
YouTube playlist or scheduled broadcast
A YouTube channel playlist is not the same thing as a live broadcast. The YouTube Live Streaming API models broadcasts and streams as separate resources; it can be used to schedule and manage broadcasts, but it is a separate development route, not a requirement for simply starting a prepared encoder with cron. The API documentation does not establish that a regular YouTube video playlist can be scheduled as a live stream.

Prepare each YouTube broadcast and encoder
-
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current interface and broadcast options.
-
Record the stream server URL and stream key for the broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a script, repository, log, or article. Store it somewhere readable only by the account running the encoder.
-
Configure the encoder for the scheduled stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder settings guidance; it lists H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a tested FFmpeg command for every source file or Ubuntu installation.

Build a local playlist with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents two common approaches to concatenation in its FAQ. The concat demuxer can avoid re-encoding when the container and input parameters allow it. The concat filter is designed for concatenation and is the appropriate direction when re-encoding is required. Neither method is universally suitable for every mix of files; test the actual playlist before putting it on a schedule.
- Use the concat demuxer when inputs are compatible and you want to avoid re-encoding, subject to FFmpeg’s input requirements.
- Use the concat filter when the media requires re-encoding or the inputs need to be brought into a consistent output format.
- Decide whether the playlist should repeat or finish. The schedule and script need a defined end condition; starting a process is not the same as deciding when a broadcast should stop.
The reviewed documentation does not establish a universal end-to-end command for streaming every playlist to every YouTube broadcast. Build and validate the FFmpeg invocation against your own files, encoder settings, and stream details.

Set cron to India time on Ubuntu
A crontab entry has five time/date fields followed by a command: minute, hour, day of month, month, and weekday. Cron checks entries every minute, and a job runs as the user who owns that crontab. Use the IANA time zone Asia/Kolkata for India-local scheduling when your installed cron implementation supports a per-crontab timezone.
The Ubuntu Noble crontab(5) manual documents CRON_TZ. The Ubuntu Jammy crontab(5) manual documents the classic cron syntax but does not establish the same per-table timezone support. Cron implementations and package versions vary, so check the manual for the Ubuntu release and package installed on your machine. The Noble manual identifies cronie 1.7.1-1; the Jammy manual identifies cron 3.0pl1-137ubuntu3.

Install the entries in the crontab for the intended account, for example with crontab -e while logged in as that user. Cron’s environment is more limited than an interactive shell, so scripts should use stable absolute paths and explicitly define required environment variables. If your installed cron does not support CRON_TZ, configure the host timezone deliberately and confirm the next run with a harmless logging job. The schedule timezone and the daemon’s timezone used in logs may differ.
When both day-of-month and weekday are restricted, ordinary cron semantics allow either matching field to trigger the job; they are not an AND condition. Review the schedule fields carefully so that a job does not run on dates you did not intend.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a design for multiple playlists
Use one script and cron entry per playlist when schedules are distinct and simple. A single dispatcher can instead select a playlist from configuration, but it adds logic that you must test. In either design, determine whether streams overlap, whether each uses its own prepared broadcast and key, and whether the Ubuntu host can handle the combined encoding, memory, and network load. Those limits depend on the specific machine and setup; no universal capacity figure follows from cron or YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Start by testing each playlist on its own. Only schedule overlapping jobs after verifying that the host and the planned YouTube broadcasts can support them. Cron’s successful launch of a process does not prove that the encoder connected, YouTube accepted the stream, or the broadcast went live.
Make scheduled jobs observable and recoverable
- Capture output and errors. Redirect each job’s standard output and error to a distinct log, as in the illustrative crontab, and make sure the log directory exists and is writable by the crontab owner.
- Check process outcomes. Review exit status and logs, and confirm the stream appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room rather than treating a cron launch as success.
- Prevent duplicate starts. Decide how the script detects an already-running encoder so a delayed or repeated invocation does not create an unintended second process.
- Define shutdown behavior. Decide how the encoder stops, what happens at the broadcast end, and how you will handle a missed start or failed connection. Test those paths rather than assuming cron manages them.
- Protect credentials. Restrict access to scripts and configuration containing stream keys; avoid logging secrets.
Common scheduling problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The job runs at the wrong local time | The host timezone differs from India, or the installed cron does not support the assumed CRON_TZ behavior. |
Check the installed package’s manual, configure the host timezone or supported per-crontab setting, and validate with a harmless test job. |
| The job works in a terminal but not in cron | Cron provides a limited environment, or the script relies on relative paths or interactive-shell settings. | Use absolute executable and file paths, define needed environment variables in the script, and inspect redirected output and errors. |
| The encoder starts but the broadcast is not live | The encoder connection and the YouTube broadcast transition are separate steps. | Check the preview in Live Control Room and confirm whether a manual “Go live” action or an API-managed transition is part of your design. |
| The stream fails when a playlist changes files | The inputs may not satisfy the chosen concat method’s compatibility requirements. | Test the actual media sequence and select the concat demuxer only where its input requirements permit; otherwise use a concat filter with re-encoding. |
| Two jobs interfere or overload the host | Schedules overlap, duplicate processes start, or the machine lacks capacity for the combined workload. | Test jobs separately, check for existing encoder processes, and validate the actual overlap before enabling it. |
