YouTube creates the event and supplies the ingest address and stream key; the server handles the playlist, encoding and continuous connection. The YouTube setup below reflects its guidance checked on October 3, 2026.
How the setup works
A scheduled YouTube live stream and a 24/7 playback system are two separate parts. YouTube Studio creates the event and watch page. A server-side player or other equipment plays prerecorded files in sequence, encodes the output and sends it to YouTube using the event’s stream URL and key. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover the connection and event workflow, but do not prescribe a playlist or looping program.
- YouTube Studio: creates and configures the live event.
- Server and encoder: play your files and send a live audio/video signal to YouTube.
YouTube supports an encoder running as software on a computer or a standalone hardware encoder; its instructions do not require a particular server operating system, hardware class or playlist tool. Choose software or equipment that can play the files in sequence, encode your chosen format continuously, accept YouTube’s ingest settings and recover in a way you can maintain.
Check channel eligibility first
Before configuring the server, confirm that the channel can livestream. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Its current help guidance also says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and the user must be at least 16 to livestream. Schedule the live event and get its ingest settings
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- In Live Control Room, open Manage → Schedule stream. Create a new stream or reuse prior settings. Reuse copies metadata, stream settings and the stream key, so check that the title, visibility, schedule and other copied details fit this event.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. YouTube describes the key as analogous to a password and address. Keep it private; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
- Use the RTMPS URL if your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP traffic using TLS/SSL. Reveal and copy the RTMPS URL from Stream settings rather than assuming the regular RTMP address is the right one. YouTube notes port 443 may help with some SSL connection issues; use the endpoint and options shown for your event. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Configure the server’s playback software to send the playlist output to the encoder, then start the encoder. Wait for the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live for a scheduled event unless you have deliberately configured and checked auto-start. Inspect auto-stop too: do not assume either setting is enabled or behaves as you intend.
- Check that the public watch page is accessible and that both audio and video are present. Confirm that the server continues sending a healthy signal after the stream is live.
Choose encoder settings for the actual stream
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the bitrate that matches your selected resolution and frame rate; a single bitrate is not appropriate for every stream. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 options, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio, with format-specific limits. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Check the full table before configuring the encoder: YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Match the encoder’s output to the video you intend to play and the capability of your server and connection. If you change resolution or frame rate, consult the relevant bitrate entry rather than carrying over a value from another format. Use RTMPS when supported, and copy the exact event URL and key from Live Control Room.

Build and operate the playlist on your server
The YouTube event does not create or loop a playlist for you. Configure your chosen player or encoder to play the prerecorded files in the required order and continue playback as a live output. The exact playlist syntax, loop setting, process supervisor, restart command and server sizing depend on the software and host you select; YouTube’s cited help pages do not specify those implementation details. Use that tool’s own documentation rather than assuming a command or setting.
Before relying on the channel, run an end-to-end test with the same files, playlist behavior, encoder settings and ingest path you plan to use. A spare or existing suitable computer can host software encoding; a dedicated server or always-on mini PC is optional, not a stated YouTube requirement. Budget for keeping the machine, network connection and playback process available, and for maintaining whatever restart or failover procedure your selected system supports.

Test reliability and monitor the stream
A 24/7 channel needs operational monitoring in addition to a correct initial setup. YouTube recommends checking preview, testing backup encoder rollover, checking local archive growth, verifying viewer access and monitoring audio and video quality. Its guidance is at YouTube’s live-streaming tips for computers.
- Confirm event privacy, metadata, schedule and stream key before starting.
- Test the full media-to-encoder-to-YouTube path in an unlisted or private test where appropriate.
- Inspect the Live Control Room preview before publishing; verify picture, sound and the public watch page on relevant devices.
- Monitor the player, server process, outgoing connection and audio/video during operation. Decide how the chosen software or host will recover after a process or connection fault, and test that procedure rather than assuming recovery.
- Keep the stream key private and test any backup encoder rollover you plan to rely on.
- Decide separately whether you need a local recording or another archive. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; its reviewed guidance does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete replay.
Copyright, reused content and continuous programming
Having permission to upload a video does not by itself establish that it is suitable for every YouTube policy or monetization decision. Use only material you own or are authorized to stream, including music, game footage and other third-party elements. A continuous loop is still subject to YouTube’s rules and any rights claims; scheduling the event does not grant rights or guarantee monetization. Review the applicable YouTube policies for your content and account before running the channel.
