How to Schedule Recorded Event Replays in an OBS YouTube Live Playlist

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Schedule the event in YouTube Studio, then use OBS to play the recording and send it to YouTube when the event is due. These are separate tasks: a scheduled YouTube Live event does not, by itself, schedule OBS playback. “Playlist” can mean an ordered queue of recordings in OBS, or a YouTube playlist that organizes the published replay afterward; the steps below cover both.

What you are scheduling—and where

YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room schedules the event for viewers. OBS acts as the encoder: it plays your local recording or recordings and sends that media feed to YouTube. YouTube’s documented launch flow still calls for starting the encoder, checking the incoming preview, and clicking Go live in Live Control Room. The reviewed YouTube and OBS documentation does not establish a built-in control that automatically starts OBS playback and launches the scheduled event together.

An OBS playlist is a playback queue. A YouTube playlist is a collection for organizing published videos. You can use either or both, but they do different jobs.

Schedule the YouTube Live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage, then schedule a stream. YouTube may adjust interface wording over time.
  2. Set the event’s title, scheduled time, audience, visibility, and other details. Scheduling creates an upcoming event that viewers can find and, where available, set reminders for.
  3. Open the event in Live Control Room and locate its stream connection details. You will need to connect OBS using YouTube’s connection flow or enter the stream URL and stream key in OBS.

Treat the stream key like a password: do not reveal it in a recording, screenshot, or shared screen. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS before going live.

Prepare the recording in OBS

For one recording

  1. Open or create the scene you will use for the event.
  2. Add a Media Source and select the video file. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes support for common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, though compatibility can depend on the file and system.
  3. Check the source’s playback and loop settings. A single-file Media Source can loop; enable looping only if you want the recording to repeat rather than stop at its end.

For an ordered series of recordings

  1. Add a VLC Video source. If that source is unavailable, install VLC and reopen OBS.
  2. Add the media items in the order you want them played. Review the list carefully, including the ending and transition between files.
  3. Choose whether the queue should loop or shuffle. Looping repeats the queue; shuffle changes the order, so leave it off when event segments must play in sequence.

OBS documents playlist playback and loop/shuffle controls, not a future-event scheduler. A queued playlist therefore does not remove the need to start the encoder and complete YouTube’s launch flow.

Connect and test OBS before the event

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Stream and connect to YouTube if that option is available, or select the custom stream option and enter the stream URL and key shown for the scheduled event in Live Control Room. Labels can vary by OBS version and connection method.
  2. Return to the event’s Live Control Room. Confirm OBS is sending a signal and that the preview shows the intended scene and media.
  3. Listen to the audio in the preview or a test recording. Check that the video is framed correctly, the correct file or playlist is selected, and the opening content is ready before the audience sees it.
  4. If you plan to keep a local backup, set OBS recording to a known location and verify there is enough free disk space. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup; OBS can record to a selected path.

YouTube Help recommends setting up at least two hours before an encoder event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. These are operational recommendations, not guarantees that a stream will be ready automatically.

Start the scheduled replay

  1. At least 15 minutes before the event, start streaming from OBS so YouTube can receive the feed.
  2. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and check that its picture and audio are correct.
  3. At the scheduled time, click Go live in Live Control Room. Starting OBS sends the feed; the YouTube control completes the documented event launch.
  4. Monitor playback and audio during the event. For a playlist, check that each item advances as expected and that the queue does not loop or shuffle unintentionally.

End the stream and organize the replay

End the broadcast through the YouTube and encoder workflow when the event is over. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Do not rely on the online archive as the only copy of an important event.

Once the archive is available, add it to a YouTube playlist if you want viewers to find it alongside related events. That published-video playlist is separate from the OBS queue you used to play the recording.

Troubleshooting

The VLC Video source is missing

The VLC source requires VLC. Install VLC, restart OBS, and check the source list again. If you only need one file, use a Media Source instead.

YouTube shows no preview

Confirm OBS is streaming, the scheduled event is the one selected in Live Control Room, and the stream URL and key match that event. Keep the key private; if it was exposed, replace it and update OBS.

The event is scheduled, but it has not started

Scheduling reserves the YouTube event time; it does not establish that OBS will start playing or that YouTube will launch the broadcast automatically. Start OBS, wait for the preview, and use Go live in Live Control Room.

The recording stops or repeats unexpectedly

For one file, review the Media Source loop setting. For several files, inspect the VLC queue and its loop and shuffle controls. Test through the ending of one item into the next before the event.

The archive is missing or incomplete

YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours, but that is not a substitute for a local backup. Check the local recording path and available disk space, and keep a local copy when losing the replay would matter.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want an uploaded recording or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs the playback in the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
