Each YouTube channel needs its own stream/ingest configuration; a Studio scheduled event does not itself send video or guarantee an unattended start.
How the setup fits together
Think of the system as one server managing several independent jobs—not one YouTube stream shared across channels. Each job needs a playlist, a schedule, and the ingest settings for the channel that should receive that playlist.
- Playlist: the local video files to play, in the intended order.
- Schedule: when that playlist starts and whether it stops, goes to standby, or repeats.
- YouTube destination: the channel-specific stream configuration used by the encoder or scheduler.
- Broadcast: the event viewers see in YouTube. It is distinct from the incoming media stream.
Google’s Live Streaming API documentation says that “if you have multiple channels, you must create a different stream for each channel.” A stream can be reused for multiple broadcasts on the same channel, such as sequential scheduled events, but that does not make its ingest key valid for a different channel.
Docker provides a way to package and run the scheduler; it does not supply the scheduler, create YouTube events, or automatically solve channel/key mapping.

Before you configure Docker
Check the YouTube channels
- Confirm that each channel can use live streaming and that you can access its Live Control Room.
- For each channel, create or select the appropriate live stream and scheduled broadcast in YouTube Studio. Keep the channel’s server URL and stream key available for that destination.
- Decide whether the broadcasts should begin unattended. YouTube’s documented scheduled-event workflow has the operator start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and click Go live. Do not assume that scheduling the event alone removes this step; test the exact workflow in each channel before depending on unattended operation.
Prepare media and a VPS
- Put each channel’s playlist files in a clearly separated directory or storage location. Confirm that every configured file exists and can be read by the container.
- Choose a Dockerized scheduler that supports separate destinations and independent schedules. Muxshed’s documentation describes one-time and cron schedules using an instance timezone, multiple videos played back-to-back, and end behavior that can stop, show a standby card, or loop continuously. Those are Muxshed-specific capabilities, not features of Docker itself.
- Plan for the number of outputs that will actually run at the same time. The reviewed project documentation does not establish a universal CPU, memory, bandwidth, or channel-count minimum for a VPS.
Set up one job per channel
- Create a YouTube destination for each channel. In that channel’s Live Control Room, create or select its stream and scheduled event. Copy that channel’s server URL and stream key from YouTube into the corresponding scheduler destination. Never substitute another channel’s key.
- Install and configure the scheduler on the VPS. Follow the selected project’s current Docker deployment instructions. Muxshed documents deployment with Docker 24+ or Podman 4+. A separate project,
tedcharles/broadcaster, describes Docker deployment and optional NVIDIA GPU encoding; its Docker Hub listing specifies Docker Engine 20.10+ and Compose v2.0+. Treat these as project requirements, not a performance recommendation, and check each project’s current release, security, and maintenance status before installing. - Make a separate schedule for each playlist. Give every job an unambiguous name, assign its own media list and timezone-aware start rule, then select the destination for the matching YouTube channel. Review the mapping before saving: a correct schedule paired with the wrong destination still sends the wrong playlist to the wrong channel.
- Choose what happens at the end. For a finite program, select the scheduler’s stop behavior if available. For a gap between events, use standby if supported. For a continuous channel, configure a loop. Confirm the behavior in the selected application: these options are not universal Docker settings.
- Start one test output at a time. Start the job for one channel, check that YouTube receives its signal and shows the expected preview, then verify the media and destination before testing the next channel. Follow the channel’s Live Control Room workflow, including clicking Go live when YouTube requires it.
- Test concurrency before relying on the schedule. Run the number of simultaneous outputs you expect and observe CPU use and outbound traffic on the VPS while checking YouTube stream health for every channel. Repeat with the actual video profiles and encoding mode; a single-output test does not establish that the VPS can handle several outputs.
Keep schedules and stream keys from crossing
Use a configuration structure that makes each channel’s job visibly separate. For example, keep distinct job names and media paths, and store each destination’s ingest settings separately rather than copying one key into a shared default. This is operational guidance: a stream key functions like a secret connection credential.
- Do not publish stream keys in a public Compose file, repository, screenshots, or routine logs.
- Restrict access to the VPS and to the files or secrets that contain ingest settings.
- Use per-output logs so that a rejected key, missing file, or stalled job can be traced to one channel.
- Configure an appropriate container restart policy, health checks, and alerts for failed or unhealthy outputs. These are safeguards to add and verify; they are not guaranteed features of every scheduler.
- Document how to rotate a key and update its matching destination if a key is exposed or replaced.
Scheduling, time zones, and YouTube events
The VPS scheduler and YouTube Studio handle different parts of the process. The scheduler starts and sends the media; Studio represents and presents the event. A schedule in either place is not proof that the other side is ready.

For recurring schedules, set the intended instance timezone and check how the chosen scheduler handles daylight-saving changes. Muxshed documents cron-based schedules with an instance timezone, but behavior may differ in other applications. Test a one-time run and a recurring run before using them for important broadcasts.
For scheduled YouTube events, verify whether the channel’s current Live Control Room requires a manual Go live action after the encoder preview appears. The documented YouTube Help workflow includes that action. If your use case requires a fully unattended start, validate it on the actual channel and event configuration rather than inferring it from the VPS schedule. YouTube Help also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end; check the current channel workflow and settings for your planned stream.

Choose a scheduler and operating model
| Option | What the available project documentation says | What to verify for your setup |
|---|---|---|
| Muxshed | Maintainer documentation describes Docker 24+ or Podman 4+ deployment, one-time or cron schedules using an instance timezone, back-to-back videos, and stop, standby-card, or continuous-loop behavior. It lists YouTube among the available destinations. | Confirm current release and image provenance, distinct destination handling, key storage, recovery behavior, resource use, and documented upgrade and backup procedures. |
tedcharles/broadcaster |
Its Docker Hub listing describes a local-media continuous-channel application, Docker deployment, and optional NVIDIA GPU encoding; it lists Docker Engine 20.10+ and Compose v2.0+ requirements. | The listing is older than the Muxshed material reviewed. Investigate current maintenance, compatibility, independent schedules, destination separation, security, and recovery before choosing it. |
| A different Dockerized scheduler | Docker can run an application, but scheduling and YouTube destination features belong to that application. | Check whether it supports independent per-playlist schedules, the end behavior you need, channel-specific destinations, secret-safe configuration, useful logs, and restart or alert mechanisms. |
Do not select a VPS size from a generic channel-count rule. Whether media is relayed or re-encoded, the video profile, and the number of simultaneous outputs all affect the load. Measure the chosen configuration on the intended VPS before scheduling it unattended.
Copyright and channel eligibility
Having a file locally does not establish that you have permission to stream it. Check the rights for every video and music track, and review YouTube’s applicable content policies and monetization rules. A playlist’s inclusion in a live stream does not determine whether it is licensed or eligible for monetization. The reviewed setup guidance does not resolve those questions for a particular playlist.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| The event is scheduled, but no video appears. | Check that the VPS job started at the expected time and is sending media. Look for the preview in that channel’s Live Control Room and complete the required Go live action if prompted. |
| YouTube rejects the output or no preview arrives. | Verify that the job uses the correct channel’s server URL and stream key, that the selected stream belongs to that channel, and that the key has not changed. Check the matching job’s logs without exposing the key. |
| The wrong playlist appears on a channel. | Stop the affected output, then inspect the job’s playlist path, schedule, and destination mapping independently. Correct the pairing and run a preview test before restarting. |
| A scheduled job starts but stops early or skips a file. | Check the per-output logs and confirm each source file exists, is readable in the container, and is included in the configured playlist. Test the affected file by itself and review the scheduler’s handling of unavailable or corrupt media. |
| One output works, but several outputs stall or overload the VPS. | Measure CPU and outbound throughput while the intended number of jobs runs with the actual encoding behavior. Reduce simultaneous work or move to a more capable VPS only after identifying the bottleneck; the reviewed documentation gives no universal sizing threshold. |
| The stream stops after a container or host interruption. | Check whether the container restarted, whether the scheduler resumed the active job, and whether YouTube still accepts the destination. Add or verify restart behavior, health checks, and alerts; confirm the recovery path with a controlled test. |
| A recurring start is an hour early or late. | Check the scheduler’s instance timezone, the schedule’s timezone assumptions, and daylight-saving behavior. Validate the next run with a test schedule instead of assuming every scheduler interprets cron times alike. |
