YouTube Studio can schedule an upcoming broadcast and its watch page; the encoder supplies the live feed. OBS can loop or shuffle a playlist, but its official documentation does not establish a built-in clock-time scheduler for choosing a specific video. For timed changes, you need a separate scheduling or automation layer in your playout setup, or a cloud service that supports the schedule you need.
First decide what you mean by “schedule”
- Start the broadcast at a future time: schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, then connect your encoder when it is time to go live.
- Rotate through videos: make a playlist in your playout software and loop it, if sequential or shuffled playback is enough.
- Switch to a particular video at a particular time: configure time-based switching in a scheduling or automation layer. A YouTube scheduled stream and an OBS playlist alone do not establish this behavior.
These are separate jobs. YouTube Studio manages the broadcast and its viewer-facing watch page; the encoder or cloud playout system determines what viewers see and hear.
Schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio
Use this when you want an upcoming stream to have a scheduled start and watch page. Scheduling the broadcast does not choose or switch the prerecorded videos in the encoder’s feed.
- In YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go Live > Manage.
- Select Schedule Stream, then reuse settings from a previous stream or create a new stream.
- Set the broadcast details and scheduled start time, then save the stream.
- In your encoder, enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. YouTube Help instructs creators to enter these in the encoder to start streaming. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Check the stream preview in Live Control Room before the broadcast. If you use YouTube’s auto-start or auto-stop settings, confirm they are enabled and understand how they affect the broadcast before relying on them.
YouTube says scheduled streams can help viewers find the upcoming watch page and set reminders. The scheduled time concerns the broadcast, not the schedule of individual videos within it. See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube Help: Schedule a live stream.

Use OBS for a loop or playlist—not assumed clock-time changes
Play one video
OBS’s built-in Media Source plays an individual media file. Add it as a source to the scene you send to the stream, then check the source’s playback behavior and the scene preview. This works for a single video, but does not by itself schedule a different file to take over at a specified hour.
Rotate through a playlist
OBS’s VLC Video source can play a playlist and provides loop and shuffle controls. Use an ordered playlist for a repeatable sequence, or shuffle if the order does not matter. A playlist and its loop or shuffle settings are not evidence of clock-time selection—for example, choosing video A at 9 a.m. and video B at noon.

For specific video changes at set times, add a scheduling layer
If the broadcast must stay online while different videos begin at exact times, the playout system needs a way to trigger the change. That can be a scheduling or automation layer that controls the media or scene sent by the encoder, or a cloud playout service whose current features explicitly meet the requirement.

Before choosing a setup, verify that it can select the intended item at the intended time, keep the outgoing program continuous during transitions, and recover appropriately if playback or the connection fails. Do not assume a playlist, a scheduled YouTube broadcast, or an OBS scene by itself supplies those functions. The official OBS pages cited above confirm media and source capabilities, not a clock-time switching recipe.
Choose local or cloud playout

YouTube’s encoder guide identifies cloud tools as an option for 24/7 playout, but its listing does not establish those providers’ current commercial terms or precise scheduling capabilities. For any option, check the feed in preview and monitor the actual audio and video. Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Preview the complete output: confirm the right video, scene, framing, and audio are reaching the encoder preview, not just playing locally.
- Check the schedule: verify the stream’s time zone and trigger times in any scheduling layer. Test a change before relying on it for a live audience.
- Test continuity: observe a transition between videos and check for gaps, frozen frames, unintended desktop capture, or audio that continues after the picture changes.
- Check access and recovery: confirm the stream key is entered correctly and test any available recovery or failover behavior before depending on it.
- Review rights and YouTube rules: use video and audio you have the rights to stream. A live format does not make copyrighted material permissible, and repeated or reused material may raise separate monetization or policy concerns. Check YouTube’s current rules for your channel and content.
YouTube states that live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is a threshold, not a recommended duration or a guarantee that a longer broadcast will be archived. If retaining a recording matters, verify the current archive behavior and arrange a separate recording where appropriate. See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
