YouTube does not document a feature that uploads a JSON file and applies playlist changes on a timer. To schedule YouTube Live playlist changes, use JSON as input for your own automation: a separate scheduler reads each instruction and calls the YouTube Data API. Schedule the live broadcast separately in YouTube Studio or through the Live Streaming API. A broadcast schedule does not itself trigger playlist edits.
What the JSON file can—and cannot—do
The workflow has two independent jobs. YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, or the Live Streaming API, schedules the broadcast. A separate script or job scheduler reads your JSON instructions and calls the YouTube Data API to add, update, or delete playlist items. YouTube’s documented API describes playlist operations and broadcast scheduling separately; it does not define a native JSON schedule-file feature.
- Broadcast schedule: specifies when the live event is scheduled to start.
- Playlist-change schedule: specifies what your automation should do to a playlist and when it should do it.
- JSON: a format you choose for your automation’s input. The API documentation defines request fields, not a standardized schedule-file schema.
That distinction matters for a live event: if your playlist must change before viewers arrive, your scheduler needs to run the edit at the intended time independently of the broadcast schedule.
Plan the playlist actions and identifiers
Collect the IDs you need
- Record the playlist ID for the playlist you intend to change.
- Record the YouTube video ID for each video you want to add.
- For an existing playlist entry that you intend to update or delete, retain its playlist-item ID. A video ID and a playlist-item ID are different identifiers.
The YouTube Data API’s playlistItems resource represents a video’s relationship to a playlist. Its documented methods include list, insert, update, and delete.

Choose an action for each scheduled change
insertadds a video to a playlist.updatechanges supported fields on an existing playlist item, such as its position.deleteremoves an existing playlist item.
Decide whether a change is an addition, a reorder, or a removal before building the schedule. For updates and deletions, identify the exact playlist item, not just the video.
Make an illustrative JSON schedule
The following is an example format for your own scheduler—not a YouTube-defined schema. It shows one addition and one position change. Use an explicit timezone in each timestamp so the job runner can interpret the intended time consistently.
{
"changes": [
{
"runAt": "2026-11-12T17:00:00Z",
"action": "insert",
"playlistId": "PLAYLIST_ID",
"videoId": "VIDEO_ID"
},
{
"runAt": "2026-11-12T17:05:00Z",
"action": "updatePosition",
"playlistId": "PLAYLIST_ID",
"playlistItemId": "PLAYLIST_ITEM_ID",
"videoId": "VIDEO_ID",
"position": 0
}
]
}
Replace the example IDs and times with real values. The updatePosition action name is an example for your own program; the YouTube API method is playlistItems.update. You could represent a deletion with an action such as delete and the playlist-item ID. Validate that every action has the identifiers and values it needs before the scheduler attempts an API request.

Authorize and run the API requests
Set up OAuth authorization
Playlist write requests require authorization for an account permitted to modify the target content. The YouTube Data API playlistItems.insert reference lists accepted OAuth scopes including youtube and youtube.force-ssl. Select the least scope that supports the operations you need, and authorize the relevant channel account. Do not place access tokens or other credentials in the JSON schedule file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInsert a video
The documented insert method sends a POST request to /youtube/v3/playlistItems. Its request body needs snippet.playlistId and snippet.resourceId; for a video, the resource kind is youtube#video.
{
"snippet": {
"playlistId": "PLAYLIST_ID",
"resourceId": {
"kind": "youtube#video",
"videoId": "VIDEO_ID"
}
}
}
Your scheduler reads the applicable JSON entry, constructs this API request, and sends it using the authorized account. The insert method reference lists a quota cost of 50 units per call.

Move an item
To set an item’s position, call playlistItems.update with the playlist-item ID and a snippet containing the playlist ID, resource ID, and desired position. The position is zero-based: 0 is the first position. Explicit positioning is valid only when the playlist is ordered manually; set the playlist to Manual ordering before relying on position updates.
{
"id": "PLAYLIST_ITEM_ID",
"snippet": {
"playlistId": "PLAYLIST_ID",
"resourceId": {
"kind": "youtube#video",
"videoId": "VIDEO_ID"
},
"position": 0
}
}
The update method reference lists a quota cost of 50 units per call. Confirm the playlist-item ID and video relationship before sending an update, particularly if playlist membership may have changed since the schedule was written.
Remove an item
To remove an entry, call playlistItems.delete for its playlist-item ID. Your schedule should identify the particular item to remove; deleting or changing playlist membership is not accomplished by editing the broadcast’s scheduled start time.

Run the schedule reliably
You need a separate timer or job runner to execute each entry. YouTube’s cited playlist and broadcast documentation does not prescribe a scheduler, hosting platform, timing precision, JSON format, retry policy, or secret-storage system; choose those for your environment rather than treating them as YouTube requirements.
- Load and validate: parse the JSON and reject malformed dates, unknown actions, missing IDs, or invalid positions before making API calls.
- Wait for each due time: have your chosen scheduler invoke the job at the date and time in the entry. Use the timezone convention supported by your runner consistently.
- Call the matching API method: map additions to
playlistItems.insert, supported changes such as position toplaylistItems.update, and removals toplaylistItems.delete. - Record outcomes: log the scheduled action, API response, and errors so you can determine what happened if a change is missing or ran unexpectedly.
- Test first: try the automation with a noncritical playlist before relying on it for a public event. This is prudent deployment practice, not a claim that YouTube provides an end-to-end JSON scheduler.
Schedule the live broadcast separately
Use YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Open the Manage tab and choose Schedule stream.
- Create a new stream or reuse settings, then set up the broadcast as required.
YouTube Help says a scheduled stream may appear in subscribers’ feeds as upcoming. That describes the broadcast listing, not a playlist-change trigger.
Use the Live Streaming API instead
The Live Streaming API’s broadcast insert operation creates a liveBroadcast resource with scheduled start-time and other broadcast fields. This schedules a broadcast resource; it does not document playlist-item scheduling. Whether you schedule the broadcast in Studio or through the API, arrange and verify the playlist automation as a separate job.

Check copyright and communicate changes
Playlist automation changes playlist membership and ordering; it does not grant rights to the videos or determine whether a stream is eligible to use them. Before scheduling a public live event, confirm you have the necessary rights to the content and that your planned use complies with YouTube’s applicable rules. Tell viewers about the live schedule and significant changes so the playlist and event plan are clear to them.
Common problems and fixes
- The JSON file appears to do nothing: uploading JSON to YouTube is not the documented scheduling mechanism. Confirm that your own scheduler is running, reads the file, and makes the API request.
- The API rejects a write request: check that OAuth authorization is present, the authorized account can modify the target content, and the request includes the required playlist and resource identifiers.
- An item will not move to the requested position: confirm the playlist uses Manual ordering, that the request includes the playlist-item ID and resource fields, and that the position is a zero-based value.
- A change ran at the wrong time: inspect the timestamp, timezone interpretation, and scheduler configuration. The schedule-file format and timing behavior belong to your chosen runner.
- The live event started without the expected playlist edit: treat this as two separate jobs. Check the playlist scheduler’s run history and API response; a scheduled broadcast does not invoke playlist edits by itself.
- You need to investigate quota use: the official insert and update method references each list 50 quota units per call. Check the relevant method reference for the operation being used and account for each scheduled API request.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream; it does not schedule JSON-driven playlist edits or replace the Data API workflow above. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home: StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
