Docker packages and runs the software; it does not schedule YouTube’s event or automatically click Go live in Studio.
How the pieces fit together
A scheduled YouTube broadcast and the media feed sent to it are different things. Google’s Live Streaming API models them as a liveBroadcast resource—the event viewers watch—and a liveStream resource—the incoming video feed. Docker can run the player that supplies the feed, but a separate step must create or schedule the event and another must determine when the player runs.
- Create the broadcast: schedule it in YouTube Studio or create and manage it through the Live Streaming API.
- Play the playlist: run FFmpeg or another suitable player in a container, with access to the media files and playlist.
- Send the feed: configure the encoder with YouTube’s server URL and the stream key for the channel.
- Control the timing: use a host scheduler, such as cron or a systemd timer, or application logic to start and stop the encoder process.
These parts can be automated to different degrees. A timer that starts FFmpeg does not itself create a YouTube event, and a Docker restart policy does not perform the Studio event transition.
Choose an approach for scheduling the broadcast
YouTube Studio and a manually started encoder
For occasional streams, schedule the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Set the event’s title, visibility and time, then note its watch-page details. YouTube says scheduling lets you promote the stream and share its URL so viewers can set reminders. At airtime, start the encoder with the event’s stream URL and key. In YouTube’s documented scheduled workflow, wait for the incoming preview and click Go live in Live Control Room.

This approach keeps event management in Studio, but requires an operator for the documented preview and launch steps. Do not assume that starting a container alone will make the scheduled event live.
Studio event plus a host timer
A host timer can start and stop the player at a planned time while you prepare the event in Studio. This reduces manual process control, but the timer and YouTube’s event state remain separate. If your goal is unattended launch, verify the complete workflow with your channel configuration rather than assuming a timer will transition the event to live.
API-managed broadcasts
For recurring schedules or custom metadata and state handling, an application can manage broadcasts through Google’s Live Streaming API. The channel owner’s Google Account must authorize writes. Your application needs to handle OAuth, API setup, permissions, quota and errors, as well as valid broadcast state transitions.

The API separates the event from its feed: a broadcast can be associated with a stream resource. Google’s guide says a stream can be bound to up to three broadcasts. A recurring channel may reuse a stream resource for broadcasts at different times; separate concurrent shows may call for distinct stream resources. The three-broadcast limit and concurrent-event semantics are not a general recipe for running many independent playlist streams.

A community project illustrates one possible combination: Docker-hosted Go2RTC, Bash scripts, curl, jq, cron and YouTube Data API OAuth credentials. Its README reports Ubuntu Server 24.04, Docker 27.5.1 and project version 1.1.0 as its own tested context, and documents assumptions including a /home/user path. Those are the project author’s reported details, not independent compatibility testing. Inspect its current scripts, image versions, credential handling and time-zone assumptions before adapting it.
Prepare the playlist and Docker service
Make the media available inside the container
Keep the video files and playlist in a directory the container can read, then mount that directory as a volume. Docker Compose can define the service, network and volumes in YAML and start the configured stack; it does not determine playlist order or wall-clock launch time.

FFmpeg supports the ffconcat list format through its concat demuxer. The actual command depends on the files’ codecs, timestamps, audio and video stream layout, whether the inputs match, and whether transcoding is needed. Confirm that the playlist plays in the intended order and test transitions using your actual files. Do not assume transitions will be seamless without testing.
Choose looping and process behavior deliberately
Decide how playback should behave when it reaches the end of the list: stop, repeat, or hand control back to a scheduler. The exact choice depends on the player command and orchestration you use. Test both end-of-file behavior and the scheduler’s stop action; a container that remains running is not necessarily still sending usable video.
Keep the schedule outside Compose
Use cron, a systemd timer or application logic for wall-clock start and stop decisions. Choose based on whether each event gets a separate process or container, how the host handles time zones and daylight-saving changes, and what recovery behavior you require. Compose describes and runs services; a separate scheduling layer controls when the stream process starts.

No bitrate or resolution value is universal for this setup: the appropriate encoder settings depend on the source files and the current YouTube encoder requirements. Check YouTube’s current settings and your media properties rather than copying an unverified preset.
Connect the encoder securely
- Get the event’s connection details: use the server URL and stream key provided for the channel or scheduled event in YouTube’s streaming setup.
- Provide them to the container: configure the encoder to send its output to that URL using that key.
- Protect the key: treat it as a secret. Do not commit it to a Compose file or repository, expose it in screenshots, or print it in logs. A protected environment file or a secret store is a practical implementation choice, not a special YouTube requirement.
- Verify the preview: check the incoming signal in Live Control Room before the scheduled event begins, then follow the Studio launch flow for the event.
If you use the API, add explicit handling for authorization failures, expired credentials, quota or API errors, and invalid broadcast states. A successful container start is not proof that the account is authorized or the broadcast is ready.
Test before relying on a schedule
- Create a private or unlisted test event and explicitly check its visibility. YouTube’s default visibility can depend on account age.
- Run the complete path: timer, container, playlist, encoder connection and YouTube preview.
- Check audio and video, synchronization, playlist order, transitions, end-of-file behavior and the scheduled stop.
- Simulate likely failures where practical, including a stopped encoder, temporary network loss, host reboot, unavailable source file and a clock or time-zone mismatch.
- Confirm that logs and alerts make failures visible, and test recovery rather than assuming it is seamless.
These checks matter because the workflow spans independent components. The documented sources do not establish a universal reconnect strategy or guarantee uninterrupted recovery for a particular Docker stack.

Common scheduling problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The scheduled event does not go live when the container starts. | The container sends media, but YouTube’s event transition is a separate step. | Check the incoming preview in Live Control Room and complete the documented Go live action. If using API automation, inspect the broadcast state and error handling. |
| YouTube shows no incoming video. | Wrong server URL or stream key, encoder failure, or no readable input. | Verify the event’s connection details, container logs, mounted media path and that the player is producing output. |
| The playlist stops early or does not repeat. | End-of-file behavior or list syntax differs from what the command expects. | Test the playlist and loop behavior with the actual files, then check the player command and scheduler’s stop logic. |
| The timer fires at the wrong time. | Host time zone, daylight-saving transition or schedule configuration mismatch. | Check the host’s clock and configured time zone, and test a schedule across the relevant time change. |
| The API-managed event cannot be updated or started. | Authorization, quota, permissions or broadcast state error. | Confirm OAuth authorization belongs to the account that owns the channel; log API responses and handle errors and state transitions. |
| Playback breaks at a playlist transition. | Input files may differ in timestamps, codecs or stream layout. | Test transitions between the specific files; adjust the media or processing approach based on the observed incompatibility. |
Choose the right setup for your use case
| Approach | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio plus manually started Docker encoder | Occasional scheduled streams with an operator available. | Event management is straightforward, but the operator handles preview and launch. |
| Studio event plus host timer | Predictable schedules where the event is prepared in advance. | The timer starts the encoder; unattended YouTube event launch must be verified separately. |
| API-managed broadcast plus Dockerized player | Recurring schedules and custom event or state management. | More automation control requires OAuth, authorization, API error handling and state management. |
| Community Go2RTC and cron example | A starting point for readers whose workflow fits its documented assumptions. | Community-maintained, with project-specific versions, paths and environment assumptions; inspect before adapting. |
| FFmpeg playlist player | Command-driven playback of prerecorded files. | Not a substitute for a production encoder when you need operator scene switching, graphics or multiple live inputs. |
For this narrow prerecorded-video workflow, the essential tools are software: Docker, a media player or relay, YouTube Studio or its API, and a host scheduler. A camera, capture card or encoder appliance is not required unless the production also includes a live camera or HDMI source. An external SSD is an optional way to hold video files if the host lacks room; the required capacity depends on the library’s actual file sizes.
YouTube archiving, copyright and channel rules
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement describes the archive behavior for streams under that duration; it is not a guarantee of unlimited runtime or of a complete archive for streams longer than 12 hours.
Before scheduling prerecorded material, make sure you have the rights to use every video and audio track. A live format does not remove copyright obligations. Review YouTube’s current copyright rules and channel monetization policies, including its reused-content guidance, before building a recurring playlist. Repeated or minimally changed material can affect monetization eligibility; a stream being technically playable does not establish that it complies with YouTube’s policies.
