You can use Google Sheets as a schedule and Apps Script to call YouTube’s APIs, but there is no single API operation that turns a list of playlist videos into scheduled livestreams. Create each scheduled livestream as a separate liveBroadcast, and add videos to a playlist separately as playlistItems. The workflow below keeps those resources and their IDs distinct.
What the workflow can—and cannot—schedule
A YouTube livestream event is represented by a liveBroadcast. A liveStream is a separate resource that carries video to YouTube; a broadcast can be bound to a stream. Adding a video to a playlist is another operation entirely. The APIs document these as separate resources and methods, not as a playlist feature that automatically starts a livestream or schedules every video in sequence. In this setup, the spreadsheet is your input and tracking surface, Apps Script orchestrates requests, and YouTube’s APIs create or update the relevant resources. A scheduled broadcast is an event, not a guarantee that a video will be sent to it automatically. The documented API workflow does not establish unattended playlist playback.
Choose a spreadsheet layout
Google’s documentation describes API fields and operations, not a prescribed spreadsheet template. A practical sheet can use one row per planned broadcast or playlist action, with columns like these:

- Scheduled start time: the future date and time for the broadcast, including a consistent time-zone convention.
- Broadcast title: the title sent as
snippet.title. - Privacy: the supported privacy status you intend to send as
status.privacyStatus. - Playlist ID: the playlist to which a video should be added.
- Video ID: the YouTube video identifier to insert into that playlist.
- Broadcast ID: the ID returned when the broadcast is created.
- Playlist item ID: the ID returned when the playlist item is inserted.
- Status and error: a processing result for each operation, so you can distinguish success from a row that needs attention.
Keep broadcast fields and playlist fields separate even if they share a row. One row can describe related work for an event, but the API calls still create different resources, with different returned IDs and possible failures.
Enable the YouTube service in Apps Script
- Open the script attached to your spreadsheet. In Google Sheets, use Extensions > Apps Script to open its Apps Script project.
- Enable the advanced YouTube service. In the Apps Script editor, open Services, add YouTube Data API, and save the project. Google’s Apps Script YouTube service documentation explains that the advanced service exposes YouTube Data API and Live Streaming API methods and follows the public APIs’ objects, methods, and parameters.
- Authorize the operations you use. Run a function that calls the service and follow Google’s authorization flow. Playlist-item insertion requires OAuth 2.0 authorization; the broadcast insert reference lists the authorization scopes for that operation. Request only scopes appropriate to the operations in your script.
Enabling the service makes API methods available to your script; it does not create a ready-made scheduling spreadsheet or a turnkey scheduler.

Create each scheduled livestream as a broadcast
For each event row, use liveBroadcasts.insert. Its request body requires a title, a scheduled start time, and a privacy status. The start time must be in the future and close enough that YouTube can schedule it reliably; do not treat arbitrary far-future dates as guaranteed. Consult the current LiveBroadcasts: insert reference for the accepted resource fields and constraints.
- Read and validate the row. Confirm that the title and privacy value are present and that the scheduled start time parses as a future time in the intended time zone.
- Build the broadcast resource. Put the title in
snippet.title, the start time insnippet.scheduledStartTime, and the privacy setting instatus.privacyStatus. - Call the insert method. Use the advanced YouTube service to send the resource to the Live Streaming API.
- Save the returned broadcast ID and result. Store the ID in the sheet and mark the row as created only after a successful response. If the call fails, record a useful error instead of marking the row complete.
Creating the broadcast does not itself send video. Broadcasts and streams are distinct resources, and the event may need to be associated with a stream as part of a broader live setup. This scheduling workflow should not be represented as an operation that starts an encoder or plays a playlist.

Add a video to a playlist as a separate operation
Use playlistItems.insert when a row should add an existing YouTube video to a playlist. The request needs the target playlist ID in snippet.playlistId and a video resource identifier in snippet.resourceId. Google’s PlaylistItems: insert reference documents the operation and its authorization requirement; the playlists implementation guide shows the OAuth-authorized workflow.
- Check the IDs. Confirm the playlist ID and video ID are populated and belong to the intended resources.
- Construct a playlist-item resource. Set
snippet.playlistIdto the target playlist andsnippet.resourceIdto the YouTube video resource. - Insert and record the outcome. Save the returned playlist-item ID on success. On failure, leave the row visibly incomplete and capture the API error for review.
Do not infer that inserting a broadcast also adds its video to a playlist, or that inserting a playlist item schedules a broadcast. The operations require separate requests and identifiers.

Handle ordering and updates carefully
Playlist order
If you need to set a playlist item’s position, check that the playlist uses manual ordering. The PlaylistItems: update reference documents the manual-sort requirement for positioning. An insertion alone is not a substitute for verifying the playlist’s ordering behavior.
Broadcast updates
Before updating a broadcast, read the current resource and preserve values that must remain. The LiveBroadcasts: update method requires the resource ID and relevant scheduling or monitoring data. If a request includes a mutable part but omits values that should be retained, the update can replace or remove those values. Avoid building an update from an incomplete or stale spreadsheet row.

Make reruns and failures safe
A script can stop partway through a batch: some broadcasts or playlist items may already have been created when a later request fails. Use the sheet’s status columns to make that state explicit. Before retrying a row, check whether its operation already succeeded and whether the returned ID was saved. Do not blindly repeat inserts; duplicate playlist items and other API errors are documented possibilities.
Playlist insertion can fail because of permissions, a missing playlist or video, an unsupported playlist, an existing duplicate, or a playlist capacity limit. See YouTube Data API errors for documented error details. Show a row-level message that identifies the failed operation and lets you correct the relevant ID, permission, or playlist condition before retrying.
- Authorization error: confirm the script has been authorized for the operation and that the signed-in account has the necessary access.
- Missing or incorrect resource: recheck the playlist ID, video ID, or broadcast ID in the row.
- Duplicate playlist item: verify whether the video is already present before attempting another insert.
- Invalid schedule: check that the scheduled time is future-facing and within the scheduling range YouTube can reliably handle.
- Unexpected update result: review the complete resource sent in the update, especially fields in any included mutable part that must be retained.
- Incorrect playlist position: confirm that the playlist is manually ordered before sending position updates.
Manual scheduling or spreadsheet automation?
For a small number of events, creating schedules manually in YouTube Studio can involve less initial setup. A Sheets-and-Apps-Script workflow can make repeated, row-based planning easier to organize, but it also means maintaining authorization, request handling, IDs, and error recovery. These are practical trade-offs, not a measured comparison of the two approaches; the API documentation describes operations rather than evaluating Studio against Apps Script.
