You can’t natively AirPlay an iPhone screen to an Xbox Series X. Xbox Series X isn’t a built-in AirPlay receiver. If you want to show your iPhone on the TV, use an AirPlay-enabled TV, Apple TV, or compatible HDMI adapter. If you want to play Xbox games on your iPhone, use Xbox Remote Play—it streams in the opposite direction.
Can you AirPlay an iPhone directly to Xbox Series X?
No—not with a standard Xbox Series X setting. Apple’s AirPlay overview describes mirroring to Apple TV and AirPlay-enabled TVs; Xbox consoles aren’t listed as native AirPlay receivers. You can open iPhone Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, and choose a compatible receiver, but you should not expect the Xbox to appear.
Don’t confuse AirPlay with the Xbox Wireless Display app. Wireless Display is intended for compatible Miracast senders; iPhones use AirPlay, a different protocol.
Some instructions online refer to AirServer, an app that can make supported devices act as AirPlay receivers. However, AirServer’s Xbox product page specifically describes Xbox One. Its documentation also discusses Xbox software editions, but that is not enough to confirm current Xbox Series X|S compatibility. Check the current Microsoft Store listing or ask AirServer support before buying or relying on it.

AirServer: a conditional workaround
If AirServer or another receiver app explicitly confirms support for your Series X|S, the general setup is:
- Install the supported receiver app from the Xbox/Microsoft Store and launch it on the console.
- Connect the iPhone and Xbox to the same local Wi-Fi network. Avoid guest Wi-Fi.
- On the iPhone, open Control Center and tap Screen Mirroring.
- Select the receiver shown on the iPhone. Enter an on-screen code if prompted.
- To stop, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, then tap Stop Mirroring.
AirPlay discovery can fail when a router blocks communication between devices. VPNs, client isolation, and some mesh or managed networks may also prevent the receiver from appearing. Even if mirroring connects, protected video apps may block playback or show a black screen; AirServer documents these network and content-protection limitations here. Mirroring also adds delay, so it’s a poor choice for latency-sensitive games.

Xbox Remote Play is the reverse direction
Xbox Remote Play streams games from your Xbox to your iPhone. It lets you play your console remotely; it does not send the iPhone Home Screen, Photos, Safari, or other apps to the TV through the Xbox.
Microsoft’s current Remote Play page lists Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One, a compatible iPhone or iPad running iOS 15.1 or later, a Microsoft account with an Xbox profile, and an internet connection. It calls for 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data and lists 10 Mbps download speed as a connection requirement signal. A compatible Bluetooth controller is useful for gameplay. Check Microsoft’s page for current requirements.

- On the Xbox, open Settings and find the Remote features controls in the device or connection area. Enable remote features and run the connection test if it’s offered.
- Install or open the official Xbox app on your iPhone and sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the console.
- Choose the console or Remote Play option in the app and select your Xbox Series X.
- Pair a compatible Bluetooth controller with the iPhone if you want to play games.
Xbox menu names and app screens can change with updates, so follow the labels currently shown on your console and in the Xbox app. Remote Play can work over supported local or external internet connections; it does not require the iPhone to act as an AirPlay sender.
Best ways to show your iPhone on the TV
- AirPlay-enabled TV or Apple TV: Mirror wirelessly to a compatible receiver. The Xbox stays connected to another HDMI input; switch the TV input when you want to return to Xbox gaming.
- Wired HDMI adapter: Connect the iPhone to the TV’s HDMI input, then switch the TV to that input. Check your iPhone’s connector and whether the adapter supports video output; Lightning and USB-C models need different accessories, and a charging-only USB-C accessory won’t display video.
- Native TV or Xbox app for streaming: If you only want to watch a particular streaming service, use its TV or Xbox app where available. Protected content may not mirror from an iPhone even when ordinary screen content does.
Troubleshooting
The Xbox doesn’t appear under Screen Mirroring
First confirm that your receiver app explicitly supports Series X|S and is running. Then put both devices on the same non-guest Wi-Fi network, temporarily disable a VPN, and restart the app and devices. If the router isolates wireless clients, local discovery may be blocked. If the receiver still doesn’t appear, use an AirPlay-enabled TV, Apple TV, or HDMI adapter rather than assuming the Xbox can receive AirPlay.

It connects but video is black
Try mirroring the Home Screen, Photos, or Safari. If those display but a streaming service does not, DRM or the service’s playback rules are the likely cause. Use the service’s native TV/Xbox app or a supported TV receiver instead.

The image is choppy or delayed
Move the iPhone and console closer to the router, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi where practical, pause large downloads, and reduce network interference. Ethernet for the console may help if the receiver setup supports it. Screen mirroring is not a good fit for games where quick response matters.

Remote Play won’t connect
Check that remote features are enabled, the Xbox app and console use the same Microsoft account, and the console passes its remote-play network test. Confirm the iPhone meets Microsoft’s current iOS and connection requirements. Pair a controller if gameplay is your goal.
