To search Nintendo game trademarks in the United States, use the official USPTO Trademark Search. Search the game name first, then broaden to alternate wording and pronunciations, search owner names separately, and check the goods, services, and status on promising records. A result is a lead for further review—not proof that a name is available or legally clear.
Start with the game name in USPTO Trademark Search
The USPTO’s Trademark Search database covers applied-for and registered marks. Open it from the USPTO’s trademark search page and begin with the Nintendo game name you want to investigate.
The simple wordmark and general-search options work with one word at a time, according to the USPTO’s Trademark Search help. For an exact multiword phrase, use the field-tag or search-builder approach and enclose the phrase in straight double quotation marks. For example, the help page shows CM:"happy birthday" AND LD:true to search an exact phrase among live marks. Substitute the actual game wording; this example is not a Nintendo-specific query.
Broaden the search beyond the exact title
An exact-title search can miss records with only part of the name, added wording, a different spelling, or a similar pronunciation. Search important words individually and in combinations, and try plausible spelling and pronunciation variations. The USPTO describes a basic “knock-out” search as a starting point, not a complete search strategy. Its guidance warns: “There’s no surefire way to uncover all potentially conflicting trademarks.”

Search Nintendo-related owners separately
Search owner information as a separate angle using the owner-name option or the ON: field tag. The USPTO help page’s syntax example is ON:"John Smith"; replace the sample with the owner name you want to search. Inspect the owner shown on each result rather than assuming every relevant record uses the same Nintendo entity name.
Check goods, services, and live status
For promising wording matches, look at what the record actually covers and whether it is live. The USPTO help documents GS: for goods and services, IC: for international class, and LD:true or LD:false for live or dead records. Its examples include GS:"yoga pants" and IC:025. These are syntax examples, not Nintendo-related findings.

- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
- Goods and services: Consider whether the listed goods or services relate to your intended use. A live mark with similar wording and related goods or services deserves closer review.
- Class: Use an international class as a filtering aid, not a final test. Goods or services can be related even if they fall in different classes; a shared class number alone does not establish a conflict.
- Status: A live record merits attention, but status alone does not determine whether a proposed use is permissible. A dead record is not the same as a legal finding that a name is available.
Open important results in TSDR
When a result may matter, open its record in the USPTO’s Trademark Status and Document Retrieval system (TSDR). The USPTO says TSDR provides additional record details and documents. Review that information instead of relying only on the search-results tile; prosecution and maintenance details may help explain the record’s current state.
Compare potentially relevant records
When several results appear, assess them together rather than treating a single matching word or class as decisive. Compare:

Know what a USPTO search can—and cannot—tell you
A federal database search is an essential part of a comprehensive trademark clearance search, but it does not guarantee that you have found every potentially conflicting mark or that a name is legally available. The USPTO says a comprehensive search may involve sources outside its system and suggests considering a private trademark attorney for complex clearance work. If you plan to use or register a name and the results raise questions, professional advice can help assess the specific facts.
