Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo find a moment by what happens in it, use a video tool with visual or semantic search; to find something someone said, use transcript search; and to narrow files by known properties, use metadata filters. The footage usually has to be analyzed and indexed first. These search modes are different, and a tool that can answer questions about one video does not necessarily search a whole folder or archive.
Choose the search mode that matches what you remember
“AI video search” can mean several kinds of retrieval. Start with the clue you have, then choose the corresponding search feature.
- Visual or semantic search: Describe a scene, object, action, setting, or mood, such as “a character runs through a snowy forest at night.” This is useful when you remember what appeared on screen but not the words used in the file name or dialogue. Adobe Premiere documents visual search; NVIDIA SIL-Wheel documents text-to-video matching against video embeddings.
- Transcript search: Search for an exact phrase, a speaker’s words, or a topic discussed aloud. Premiere offers audio and text results, while Moment Search says it transcribes and indexes spoken words on-device. That on-device description is the vendor’s claim.
- Metadata search: Filter using file or project properties you already know, such as frame rate, file type, or label color. Premiere documents metadata filters and allows up to eight filter rules to be stacked.
- Reference-clip search: Supply a sample clip to find visually similar footage. NVIDIA SIL-Wheel documents video-to-video search, including modes that combine a text query with a reference video.
These approaches search different signals. A semantic query is not a substitute for a transcript when you need a particular line, and a transcript will not reliably find a silent visual event.
How meaning-based video search works
Most systems first ingest or analyze footage, then create searchable representations of some combination of its frames, audio, transcript, or metadata. For example, a custom pipeline may turn video into embeddings, store them in a vector database, and retrieve candidates whose representations are similar to the query. A separate vision-language component may then describe or summarize results. Search is therefore usually an indexing-and-retrieval workflow, not ordinary filename search with a chat box added.

Some tools build an index in the background before library search becomes useful. For a one-off question about a supplied clip, a video-understanding API may be enough; for repeatedly searching an archive, persistent indexing and clear library scope matter more.
A practical workflow for finding a scene or line
- Identify the clue. Choose visual search for what appeared on screen, transcript search for speech, or metadata filters for known file properties. If the scene is clear in your memory but you do not know how the tool labels it, start with a visual or semantic query.
- Check what the tool actually searches. Confirm whether it searches the open editing project, a selected local library, an uploaded collection, a server archive, or only a video you supply. Check operating-system and file-format support before investing time in indexing.
- Analyze or index the footage. Allow the tool to finish its analysis before judging search quality. In a custom system, ingestion creates embeddings and stores them for later retrieval. Indexing time and supported footage depend on the product or pipeline; do not assume one tool’s behavior applies to another.
- Write a descriptive query. Use a short, specific phrase that combines the subject with an action or context—for example, “red car turns into a narrow alley in rain” rather than “car.” Include a useful setting, lighting condition, or camera angle if you remember it. Adobe recommends descriptive multiword queries and trying different phrasings.
- Open the result at its timestamp. Treat ranked matches as candidates, not proof. Check the surrounding footage to confirm the moment, especially if timing or precise detail matters.
- Refine with another mode or filter. Try alternate wording, narrow by source or time range, apply metadata filters, or provide a reference clip if supported. If the target is a tiny object or a brief movement, use close inspection rather than trusting a broad semantic result.
Which tools fit which kind of video library?
These options differ in scope and intended user. The documentation does not establish a single best choice for every library.

| Option | Search and scope | Platform or deployment | Useful qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Premiere media intelligence | Visuals, Audio, Text, and Metadata search within Premiere projects; metadata filters can be combined. | Premiere feature; Adobe says the models are installed locally and that footage, analysis data, and searches stay on the computer. | Adobe says visual search is English-only and less effective on small details and fast motion. Its help page was last updated June 2, 2026. |
| Scenelet | Natural-language search over files indexed on the PC, with thumbnails and timestamps, according to the vendor. | Vendor describes a Windows app and lists MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM support. | Offline operation and on-device processing are vendor claims. Check current compatibility, requirements, and licensing with the vendor. |
| Moment Search | Visual description search and spoken-word transcription and phrase search, according to the vendor. | The cited product page describes on-device speech indexing. | Confirm the current supported platform and pricing before choosing it. |
| NVIDIA SIL-Wheel | Text-to-video and video-to-video semantic search; its documentation distinguishes semantic video embeddings, caption-based search, and frame-level visual search. | Research-oriented documentation, rather than a general-purpose desktop library app. | Choose the retrieval mode that suits the clue: semantic concepts, text captured in captions, or a specific object in a frame. |
| Intel Open Edge Platform video search and summarization | Custom ingestion, embeddings, vector-database retrieval, and generation or reranking components. | Version 2026.1 documentation describes customizable self-hosted or on-premises deployment. | An implementation option for a managed archive, not a plug-and-play recommendation for every casual search. |
| NVIDIA VSS | Searches video files or streams with routes for actions or events, visual attributes, combined queries, and image search. | Implementation-oriented archive-search workflow. | Results can include start and end timestamps, with source or time filters and optional critic verification. Similarity thresholds vary with video content. |
| Gemini video understanding API | Can analyze a supplied video and answer questions about it. | Google API; processing modes and supported models are version-sensitive. | This is not evidence of a persistent folder index. Google’s separate File Search documentation says audio and video formats are not currently supported. |
How to choose between a project feature, desktop app, and archive system
- Already editing in Premiere: Try its project-level media intelligence search first if it covers your footage and search mode. Adobe’s documentation describes local processing for this feature specifically.
- Searching a personal Windows folder: A local desktop app such as Scenelet may suit you if its current supported formats and requirements match your files. Verify the vendor’s privacy and compatibility statements before indexing valuable footage.
- Managing a large or shared archive: Evaluate systems such as Intel Open Edge Platform or NVIDIA VSS if you can operate or commission an implementation. Compare deployment, ingestion, result timestamps, filtering, and verification—not only the quality of a natural-language demo.
- Asking about one video: A supplied-video analysis API can answer questions about that video, but that capability alone does not mean it creates a reusable index of your video library.
What AI search can miss
- Fast action and tiny details: Adobe says Premiere’s visual model analyzes a smaller version of footage as a sequence of still images, which makes small details and fast motion harder to detect. Google documents a static video mode that samples one frame per second and warns that fast action may lose detail at that rate.
- Wording differences: A query that is too broad—or uses terms unlike the tool’s representations—may rank unhelpful results. Try distinct descriptions of the same moment and check whether the tool supports transcript or reference-based search.
- Scores are not certainty: A similarity score is not a probability that a match is correct. NVIDIA VSS notes that useful cosine-similarity thresholds depend on the video content.
- Language and indexing limits: Premiere’s documented visual search is currently English-only. Availability, supported formats, and platform requirements vary across products, so check the named tool’s current documentation.
- Privacy varies by feature: Adobe’s local-processing statement applies to the named Premiere feature; Scenelet’s offline and on-device statements are the vendor’s claims about its app. Do not assume other features or video-AI services have the same data handling.
