First decide whether you need a Linode server at all. If your encoder can send the stream directly to YouTube, a Linode relay adds no necessary step. If you use Linode as a relay—for example, to forward a stream to multiple destinations or record it—you must secure an additional public server, its inbound publishing service, and any stream keys it stores.
This guide covers both setups, with hardening steps for a self-managed Linode relay. Exact commands and firewall rules depend on your Linux distribution, version, firewall, and network design, so confirm those details before changing access controls.
Do you need a Linode relay?
A direct setup sends video from your encoder to YouTube. A relay setup sends video to a service on Linode, which then forwards it to YouTube or other destinations. Linode’s example RTMP architecture uses an NGINX RTMP server, can optionally record streams, and can forward streams using destination credentials; it is an example, not a requirement for YouTube streaming. Linode’s RTMP server guide describes that pattern.
| Consideration | Direct encoder to YouTube | Self-managed Linode relay |
|---|---|---|
| Is a relay required? | No, if the encoder can publish directly to YouTube. | Only if your workflow needs the relay, such as forwarding or server-side recording. |
| Inbound publishing | The Linode does not need to accept the stream. | The relay accepts an inbound stream; restrict access and authenticate publishers. |
| Where credentials may be stored | In the encoder or its configuration. | In the encoder and potentially the relay’s forwarding configuration. |
| Maintenance | No relay host to patch or administer. | You maintain the host, exposed services, credentials, and any recording storage. |
If the relay serves no specific purpose, omit it. Every service and credential on an additional server expands what you need to protect.

Before changing the server
Write down the current design before applying security changes. The right firewall policy for a direct encoder-to-YouTube setup is different from one for a relay that accepts inbound RTMP.
- Identify the Linux distribution and release running on the Linode. Commands and SSH defaults vary; Linode’s SSH guide was published in 2017, so use its hardening principles rather than assuming its defaults match your current system. Linode: Harden SSH Access with Advanced OpenSSH Features.
- Determine whether the server receives inbound RTMP, which firewall controls traffic (host firewall, cloud firewall, or both), and which other services must remain reachable.
- Confirm you have a recovery route, such as a provider console, before restricting SSH or changing firewall rules.
- Back up the current SSH configuration before editing it, and keep the existing administrative session open while testing changes.
Patch the operating system and use a restricted administrator
Install security updates using the package manager and maintenance process for your distribution. Linode’s guidance recommends keeping packages current, removing unnecessary network services, and administering through a standard account rather than routine root access. See Linode’s SSH hardening guide.
- Create or confirm a personal, non-root account with the sudo privileges needed for administration.
- Verify that account can sign in and perform required administrative tasks before restricting root or other accounts.
- Apply available operating-system updates, then review which services are running and disable those your setup does not use.
- Keep a recovery route available and document how you will regain access if an update or configuration change interrupts SSH.
Harden SSH without locking yourself out
Limit SSH access to the accounts and authentication methods your administration requires. Linode documents OpenSSH controls for allowing or denying specified users or groups, but exact directives and defaults can differ by distribution and version.

- Check configuration syntax using the validation method available on your distribution. If it passes, test a fresh login before ending the original session.
- Only after successful testing, disable any login method or account you no longer need. Preserve provider-console or other recovery access.
Do not paste private keys, passwords, or stream keys into public posts or broadly readable files. Avoid copying secrets into logs or command histories when configuring services.
Allow only the network traffic your setup needs
Set policy at the firewall layers that apply to the instance, allowing only traffic required by the services you actually run. For a direct encoder-to-YouTube setup, do not open inbound RTMP just because you are livestreaming: the Linode may not receive any stream connection.
If Linode receives an inbound RTMP stream
Linode’s NGINX RTMP example listens on TCP port 1935. That is a detail of the example relay, not a universal port requirement. If your relay uses that service, allow inbound access only as broadly as the workflow requires; where possible, restrict publishing to known source addresses. Add publishing authentication rather than treating a reachable port as sufficient protection. The guide demonstrates an on_publish authentication hook; review its current configuration and repository before adapting it.

Check both the host firewall and any provider-level firewall for consistency. Do not leave other administrative or service ports exposed unless your design requires them.
If the server only sends a stream to YouTube
Keep the server’s inbound surface limited to administration and any other services you deliberately operate. The encoder-to-YouTube connection is outbound from the sender; opening inbound TCP 1935 on the Linode is not needed for that topology.
Protect stream keys and use encrypted delivery to YouTube
A relay’s forwarding configuration may contain the destination YouTube stream key. Restrict access to that configuration to the service and administrators that need it, and keep secrets out of support requests, public repositories, and broadly accessible logs. If a key is exposed, replace it through the relevant service controls and update the authorized encoder or relay configuration.

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP transmitted through TLS/SSL, providing encryption for the connection to YouTube. Its developer guidance specifies an RTMPS URL using the secure protocol, a valid endpoint and application name, and port 443. Encryption protects that transmission leg; it does not secure SSH, the Linode host, or credentials stored on it. YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide.
For an encoder publishing directly, obtain the current RTMPS URL in YouTube Live Control Room and enter it in the encoder. YouTube notes that the displayed default may be ordinary RTMP, so confirm that you selected the secure URL rather than relying on a remembered endpoint. Encoder support and labels vary. YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder.
If your encoder requires HLS rather than RTMPS, YouTube’s guidance describes HLS ingestion over HTTPS and notes that its segmented delivery has higher latency than a continuous stream. Choose a method supported by both YouTube’s current settings and your encoder. YouTube HLS ingestion guide.

Add monitoring and recovery as separate layers
Review authentication and service logs, watch for unexpected listening services, and keep a current backup and recovery procedure. If you retain recordings, decide who can access them and how long they should be kept; a recording can contain material you did not intend to publish or retain.
Fail2ban can monitor logs and respond to repeated failures, but it is an additional defense, not a substitute for sound account controls and firewall rules. Linode’s guide, updated June 27, 2023, states: “Fail2ban is intended to be used in conjunction with an already-hardened server and should not be used as a replacement for secure firewall rules.” Linode: How to Use Fail2ban to Secure Your Server.
Before ending your working SSH session, verify from a separate session that administrative access still works and that the network rules permit the required traffic while denying unnecessary access. No single measure—RTMPS, a firewall, or Fail2ban—makes a server secure by itself.
