You can send pre-recorded video to YouTube Live with GStreamer by decoding each file, normalizing its audio and video, encoding the tracks for YouTube, muxing them into FLV, and sending that output to YouTube’s RTMP or RTMPS ingest URL with rtmpsink. A playlist needs more than a single pipeline: an application must select each file and manage transitions while keeping the outgoing stream coherent.

The reliable way to build this is to verify a one-file stream first, then add playlist control and test transitions on the machine and GStreamer installation you intend to use.

How the GStreamer-to-YouTube workflow fits together

The basic flow is:

  1. Select a local video file.
  2. Demux and decode its video and audio.
  3. Convert and normalize both tracks to a consistent output profile.
  4. Encode video and audio in formats YouTube accepts.
  5. Mux the encoded tracks into FLV.
  6. Send the FLV output to YouTube using GStreamer’s rtmpsink, the ingest URL, and the stream key supplied by YouTube.

GStreamer documents rtmpsink as an RTMP sink that accepts FLV content; it is provided by the RTMP plugin in GStreamer Bad Plug-ins. Its example illustrates the encoder-to-mux relationship, but is not a complete YouTube-ready audio/video playlist pipeline. See the GStreamer rtmpsink documentation.

Exact encoder element names and available formats depend on the operating system, installed plugins, and hardware. A pipeline that works on one host may fail to negotiate caps on another, so verify the elements locally instead of assuming a universal command.

Set YouTube’s ingest details and protect the key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a live stream.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder configuration. Use the URL provided there rather than an endpoint copied from an older tutorial.
  3. Keep the key secret. YouTube treats it like a password and address for your stream. Do not expose it in logs, shell history, source control, or screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update your configuration.
  4. Start sending the stream and check the Live Control Room preview and health indicators. For a scheduled stream, follow the current Live Control Room workflow to click Go live after the preview is ready.

YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the workflow, while its live stream settings guide explains stream settings and key management. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For recurring or longer broadcasts, confirm the current Live Control Room lifecycle and archive behavior rather than assuming one connection can run indefinitely.

Choose an output profile YouTube can ingest

YouTube’s encoder settings guide lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported protocols and recommends RTMPS, the encrypted option. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.

A conservative first test

Start with H.264 video and AAC audio if your GStreamer installation supports them. YouTube’s accepted formats do not guarantee that your local build includes a matching encoder. Set constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, and choose a resolution and frame rate appropriate to the source and available upload bandwidth.

Bitrate targets depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec. For one specific example, YouTube lists 1080p at 30 fps with H.264 at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Do not apply that figure to other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs; consult YouTube’s full settings table for the target profile. Leave upload headroom and check the actual stream health rather than treating the configured bitrate as proof of a stable connection.

Verify the GStreamer installation before building the stream

  1. Confirm the host has GStreamer plus a decoder/demuxer for the test media, video and audio converters, suitable encoders, flvmux, and rtmpsink.
  2. Check the installed plugin set with GStreamer’s inspection tools. If rtmpsink is absent, install the relevant Bad Plug-ins package for that platform.
  3. Use explicit output caps and check that every branch negotiates the intended format. YouTube’s protocol and codec support does not imply that your installed plugins can produce it.
  4. Send one short, rights-cleared file to an unlisted or test event before adding playlist logic. Inspect the preview and resulting recording for video, audio, motion, and timing.

The GStreamer gst-launch-1.0 documentation describes the command as a basic pipeline and debugging tool and recommends using the GStreamer API for applications.

Build a single-file pipeline before the playlist

For one file, a conceptual pipeline has a URI or file source feeding a decoder, then separate video and audio conversion/encoding branches. Link both encoded branches to flvmux, then link the mux output to rtmpsink configured with YouTube’s current ingest URL and key. GStreamer elements such as uridecodebin or filesrc ! decodebin can provide the decode stage, depending on how the application is built.

Why a playlist needs application-level control

Sending one media file and scheduling a changing list of files are different engineering tasks. GStreamer documents multifilesrc as reading a sequentially named set of files into buffers. That role does not establish that it can schedule arbitrary video items, independently decode heterogeneous media, or ensure continuous timestamps at every switch. See the GStreamer multifile plugin documentation.

What the playlist controller must do

  • Track the playlist and select the next URI when the current item ends.
  • Handle end-of-stream and open or decode the next item.
  • Normalize differences in resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and timing before encoding.
  • Keep the outgoing encoded/muxed stream and RTMP connection coherent while the source changes.
  • Detect errors and decide how to recover when media cannot be opened or a transition fails.

A higher-level GStreamer playback or URI API and application bus events can be used to implement this control. The design goal is one stable output feeding one RTMP connection while the source changes behind it. This architecture still needs testing: transitions can expose timestamp discontinuities, encoder restarts, or audio gaps. Do not describe a transition as seamless until it has been validated with the target files, machine, and YouTube ingest.

Test playlist boundaries deliberately

  1. Keep the confirmed one-file output configuration unchanged.
  2. Add application logic for a second file and handle the first file’s end-of-stream event.
  3. Test pairs that differ in codec, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and duration, one difference at a time.
  4. Watch the YouTube preview and inspect the recording around each boundary for black frames, silence, freezes, timestamp jumps, or a dropped connection.
  5. Only expand to the full playlist after the transitions you need work reliably.

Schedule and operate the broadcast

For a scheduled broadcast, coordinate the encoder start with YouTube’s preview and Go live controls. Monitor the stream while it runs, and stop the encoder and end the event using the current Live Control Room workflow. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a single event or connection is suitable for indefinite broadcasting.

A command-line launch is useful for proving a pipeline or debugging it, but playlist transitions, monitoring, and long-running control call for an application that handles events and errors. GStreamer documents gst-launch-1.0 as a basic tool rather than a replacement for application logic.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • rtmpsink is missing: It is supplied by the RTMP plugin in GStreamer Bad Plug-ins. Check the installed plugin set and install the appropriate package for the host.
  • Caps negotiation fails or a codec is unsupported: YouTube’s accepted formats do not mean the local build has the required encoder or decoder. Inspect available elements, use compatible caps, and test each branch before connecting the mux.
  • YouTube shows no preview or cannot connect: Recheck the current server URL, stream key, protocol configuration, network access, and Live Control Room health messages. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
  • Black video, silence, or broken transitions: Test audio and video branches separately, then inspect the muxed stream and preview. Normalize mixed source formats and investigate timestamp continuity or encoder restarts at playlist boundaries.
  • Bitrate fluctuates or the stream is unstable: Match the profile to YouTube’s resolution-specific settings and available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream quality; lower the target profile if the connection cannot sustain it.
  • A launch command works once but not as a scheduled service: A command-line pipeline does not itself provide robust playlist scheduling, monitoring, or recovery. Add application-level event handling and operational controls.
