To send a GStreamer live pipeline to YouTube, encode video as H.264 and audio as AAC, parse H.264 into AVC format, mux both branches with flvmux, then send the FLV output through an RTMP- or RTMPS-capable sink. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). The exact sink element and URI syntax depend on your GStreamer installation.
How the pipeline fits together
Use this shape as a starting point, not a universal copy-and-run command. Replace the source elements, AAC encoder, and final sink with elements available on your machine:
video source ! videoconvert ! x264enc ... ! h264parse ! video/x-h264,stream-format=avc ! queue ! mux.
audio source ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! AAC encoder ! queue ! mux.
flvmux name=mux streamable=true ! RTMP(S)-capable sink configured with the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
flvmux creates the FLV output; it does not itself connect to YouTube. Its H.264 input expects AVC stream format, so the parser and caps filter on the video branch are important. GStreamer documents the muxer’s pad caps and streamable property in the flvmux reference. In streamable mode, the muxer omits indexes and duration information intended for non-streaming files.
Choose installed encoders and sources
x264enc encodes H.264; h264parse can produce AVC format. One documented AAC option is voaacenc, included in the Bad Plug-ins package. Its supported input rates include common 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz options. Check the local plugin catalogue and inspect negotiated caps rather than assuming every distribution includes the same elements: see the x264enc, h264parse, and voaacenc references.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up YouTube Live ingest
- Get the ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream key and use the ingest address shown for the stream. Configure these in the RTMP(S)-capable sink installed on your system; sink names and URI syntax vary, so confirm them in that element’s local documentation. YouTube explains where to find the key and recommends RTMPS in its RTMPS setup guidance.
- Choose RTMPS when available. YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS and recommends the secure RTMPS transport. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to send to the associated stream.
- Start with a private or unlisted test. Verify that YouTube receives both audio and video and that Live Control Room reports a healthy stream before relying on the setup for an event.
Match the encoder settings to YouTube
YouTube’s current encoder guidance calls for H.264 video and AAC audio, CBR rate control, and resolution- and frame-rate-appropriate video bitrate. Its 2026 H.264 recommendations include 8 Mbps at 720p30, 14 Mbps at 1080p30, and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed quality levels or universal minimums; consult its full table for other output modes. Leave network capacity for audio and transport overhead rather than allocating the entire connection to video.
Keyframe interval
YouTube Help, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions,” says: “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds”. With x264enc, key-int-max is a frame count, not a time value. For a two-second interval, use approximately twice the output frame rate—for example, 60 frames at 30 fps—and verify the actual encoded output.

Audio format and rate
YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround sound. Its guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1; 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. Ensure the audio branch negotiates the channel layout and sample rate you intend to deliver.
Keep the two branches from blocking each other
Place queues between the encoded branches and the muxer, as in the pipeline shape above. GStreamer notes that x264enc can introduce enough latency for a simple queue on the other branch to fill and block the pipeline. Increase the non-video queue limits or use a multiqueue if testing shows this behavior. tune=zerolatency may help in some live situations, but it trades away encoding quality; evaluate it with your real sources rather than adding it automatically. See the x264enc latency notes and GStreamer Basic tutorial 10.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
flvmux rejects the video branch or the pipeline will not link |
The parser output is not in the AVC stream format expected by the muxer. | Inspect negotiated caps after h264parse and ensure they include stream-format=avc. The parser’s config-interval property controls SPS/PPS insertion; -1 inserts them with each IDR frame, but do not set it universally without evidence that it is needed. See the parser reference. |
| The pipeline stalls after starting, or one branch stops producing data | Encoder latency may cause a queue on the other branch to fill and block. | Check queue limits and pipeline logs; raise the relevant non-video queue limits or test a multiqueue. Consider zerolatency tuning only if the latency trade-off is acceptable. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The sink, ingest address, key, or transport may be misconfigured, or the required sink/plugin is absent. | Confirm the endpoint and key in Live Control Room, check that the installed sink supports the chosen RTMP or RTMPS connection, and validate plugin availability locally. A pipeline that links successfully does not prove that its destination URI syntax is correct. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or buffering | The selected bitrate may exceed available upload capacity, output settings may not match the chosen YouTube recommendation, or the connection may be unstable. | Check the actual output resolution, frame rate, CBR target, keyframe interval, and sustained upload capacity. Leave headroom for audio and network overhead, then test under conditions similar to the event. |
| Audio is missing or the stream is rejected | The AAC encoder may be unavailable, caps may not negotiate, or sample rate/channel layout may not match the intended output. | Confirm the encoder plugin is installed, inspect the audio caps after conversion and resampling, and check the YouTube audio settings for the selected stereo or 5.1 mode. |
Test before the event
YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned event, monitoring stream health, and reviewing any messages in Live Control Room. Validate the complete pipeline—not just a saved FLV—so the sources, encoder latency, muxer, sink, network, and YouTube ingest are all exercised together.

If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded video rather than run a custom live GStreamer source, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video from the cloud, so a computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It is not a replacement for a live GStreamer camera or capture pipeline.
