How to Send Raspberry Pi FFmpeg Alerts When YouTube Goes Offline

A reliable offline alert combines Raspberry Pi FFmpeg process or progress checks with YouTube’s own stream status and health—then confirms recovery on YouTube, not just by restarting FFmpeg.

Use two independent signals: monitor FFmpeg on the Raspberry Pi for a process exit or stalled output, and check YouTube’s Live Streaming API for stream status and health. A process that is still running does not prove YouTube is receiving data; a YouTube-side warning does not, by itself, explain why. Alert only after a condition persists long enough for your setup, and call the stream recovered only after YouTube reports it active again.

What an offline alert can—and cannot—tell you

Local monitoring answers whether the encoder process appears to be running and producing output. YouTube-side monitoring answers whether YouTube reports receiving stream data and what health information it has recorded. These are different checks: a Pi can be online while publishing has failed, and an FFmpeg process can remain alive even when its output is not reaching YouTube.

YouTube’s API defines active as the state in which the user is receiving data via the stream. That confirms YouTube reports ingest, not necessarily that a viewer can watch the public broadcast. If viewer playback matters, add a separate playback check; the API status check described here is not a public-player test.

Understand YouTube’s stream and health states

Read streamStatus and healthStatus.status together. Stream status describes the stream’s lifecycle and whether YouTube reports receipt; health status describes configuration health. Neither field should be treated as a complete diagnosis on its own. See the YouTube LiveStreams API reference for definitions.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Field Value What it indicates
streamStatus active YouTube reports receiving data via the stream.
streamStatus created, ready, inactive, or error Other documented lifecycle/receipt states; record the exact value and compare it with the previous observation rather than collapsing all of them into “offline.”
healthStatus.status good No configuration issues at warning severity or worse.
healthStatus.status ok No configuration issues at error severity.
healthStatus.status bad Error-severity configuration issues are indicated.
healthStatus.status noData YouTube’s backend has no stream health information. This is not a definitive explanation for absent data.

Keep both values in each observation. For example, inactive plus noData is more informative than a generic offline label, but still does not prove whether the cause is the Pi, network, stream key, or another issue.

Build a two-layer monitor

1. Watch the local FFmpeg process and output

Have a small wrapper or service check whether the FFmpeg process exists and exits successfully. If your FFmpeg command is configured to emit progress information, also check whether that progress advances. A process-presence check alone can miss a hung or stalled encoder; advancing local progress still does not prove YouTube is receiving the stream.

When the process exits, capture its exit state and relevant diagnostic output for local troubleshooting. Redact stream keys and other credentials before storing logs or sending any excerpt in an alert.

2. Check YouTube’s API state independently

Poll the relevant YouTube Live stream through the YouTube Data API using an authorized account and record the returned stream status and health status. The API path requires YouTube authorization; the exact OAuth setup, quota handling, and a universal polling interval are not established here, so follow the current API documentation and validate the setup for your account.

A Raspberry Pi companion project, YouTube-Pi4-StreamMachine, documents a Pi Zero status companion using read-only YouTube access and a local dashboard with labels such as OFFLINE, AUTH, READY, LIVE, and WARNING. It is an example implementation, not a guarantee of ongoing maintenance, security, availability, or suitability. Another example, YouTube-AutoEncoder, describes a Raspberry Pi-targeted headless FFmpeg/systemd encoder and YouTube Live API integration; treat it as a project example, not independent verification of its operational claims.

3. Combine observations without confusing them

Store a timestamped snapshot of the local process/progress check and the YouTube fields. Compare each snapshot with the previous one so alerts can distinguish a new failure from a continuing condition. A useful alert says which stream is affected, which signal triggered it, the observed values, when they were observed, and whether the condition has persisted through your chosen threshold.

Choose a threshold and notification channel

There is no universally established polling interval, stale-progress timeout, retry count, or alert threshold. Shorter polling can reveal a change sooner but creates more API polling and potential notification activity. Requiring a condition to persist can suppress transient alerts but delays notice. Choose and validate values against your connection, stream behavior, and operational needs rather than treating an example as a universal setting.

Send the alert to a channel the operator can actually receive, such as an email or messaging destination configured in your own environment. Test delivery and state transitions deliberately, including a temporary interruption if safe to do so. Do not put stream keys or OAuth tokens in notifications, screenshots, public configuration, or logs. Exact setup instructions vary by notification provider and are not specified by the sources cited here.

Alert on recovery only after YouTube confirms it

Restarting FFmpeg is an attempted remedy, not proof of recovery. The process may restart while YouTube still reports no incoming data. Send a recovery notice only after a later API observation reports streamStatus=active; include the observed health status and timestamp so the operator can see what YouTube actually reported.

FFmpeg documents reconnect options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, and reconnect_delay_max in its protocol documentation. These controls are protocol-specific, including HTTP options; they should not be presented as a guaranteed fix for a YouTube RTMP publishing failure. Recovery still needs an independent YouTube-side check.

Troubleshoot common alert patterns

Observation What it establishes What to check next
FFmpeg is absent or exited The local encoder process is not running as expected. Inspect the local service/process logs and restart behavior; keep credentials redacted.
FFmpeg is present but progress is not advancing The process exists, but the configured local progress signal appears stalled. Check the encoder and host/network condition; verify whether YouTube also reports a change.
FFmpeg is running and advancing, but YouTube is not active Local output activity does not establish YouTube receipt. Record both API fields and inspect the publishing path and stream configuration; do not declare recovery from the local signal alone.
YouTube reports noData The backend lacks stream health information. Use the stream status and local observations too; do not treat noData as a root-cause diagnosis.
YouTube reports bad The API indicates error-severity configuration issues. Review the health details available from YouTube and the stream configuration; preserve the exact state in the alert.
FFmpeg restarted, but no recovery alert is justified The process restart shows only a local event. Wait for a subsequent YouTube observation reporting active before notifying that the broadcast recovered.
Alerts arrive late or too often The configured polling and persistence choices may not match the desired balance. Adjust and validate them in your environment; no universal timing value is established.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the bigger problem is keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream running without relying on a Raspberry Pi at home, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
