To send 4K at 60 frames per second to YouTube, set your encoder’s video output to 3840×2160 at 60fps. YouTube generally detects that signal automatically. If you need to choose a resolution in Live Control Room, create a custom stream key and enable Turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution. YouTube’s current English encoder guidance recommends 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 50 Mbps for H.264 at 4K/2160p60.
Set up 4K60 in YouTube Live Control Room
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab to manage the stream and its key. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains the stream-tab controls.
- Choose automatic or manual resolution. YouTube recommends automatic detection by default. If you need to select a resolution yourself, create a custom stream key and, in Stream Resolution, turn on Turn on manual settings. This option is associated with the custom key; it is not a general resolution switch that turns a lower-quality encoder signal into 4K.
- Set the encoder’s output. Configure the encoder to send 3840×2160 (2160p), 60fps. YouTube detects the resolution and frame rate the encoder actually sends. The source, capture path, encoder and computer must all be capable of producing that output; check their specifications for device-specific support.
- Select a supported codec and bitrate. YouTube’s current English-language encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends the following bitrates for 4K/2160p at 60fps:
| Codec | YouTube-recommended bitrate for 4K60 |
|---|---|
| AV1 | 35 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 50 Mbps |
These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular encoder or connection can sustain the stream. Choose a codec your encoder supports and test that your upload connection can maintain its bitrate. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS transport and H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 encoding among its supported encoder settings. The opened English-language help page does not display a publication date; the 2026 date identifies when the guidance was accessed.
- Set keyframes and rate control. Use a 2-second keyframe interval and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube says not to exceed a 4-second keyframe interval.
- Test before the stream matters. Run a test with audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast. Check the Live Control Room preview before going live, then monitor stream health and any warnings during the broadcast. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover testing, preview and monitoring.
Automatic detection or manual resolution?
| Setting | Use it when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic detection | The encoder’s actual output is being detected correctly. This is YouTube’s recommended default. | Confirm that the encoder sends 3840×2160 at 60fps and that the Live Control Room preview and stream health look right. |
| Manual settings | You need to specify the stream resolution rather than rely on automatic detection. | Create a custom stream key and enable Turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution. |
Use manual selection to control the setting YouTube offers for the stream; it does not upscale or create detail absent from the encoder’s signal. The relevant choice is whether YouTube correctly detects the output you are sending or whether you need to set the resolution manually.
What “4K60” means for viewers
This setup controls the signal sent from your encoder to YouTube. It is separate from the quality options a viewer sees: YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats for different devices and network conditions. Sending 4K60 therefore does not mean every viewer will watch at 4K60; playback quality depends on the available transcodes and the viewer’s device and connection.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube’s encoder guidance says low-latency optimization is unavailable for 4K/2160p streams, which are set to normal latency. If low latency is essential, account for that limitation before choosing 4K.
Troubleshoot when YouTube does not show 4K60
- The encoder profile says 4K, but the stream is not 4K. Check the encoder’s actual output resolution, not just a profile name or source setting. It must send 3840×2160.
- The stream is 4K but not 60fps. Confirm the encoder’s output frame rate is 60fps and that every part of the source and capture chain supports it. YouTube lists frame rates up to 60fps; device capability varies.
- Manual resolution is unavailable or not taking effect. Confirm you created a custom stream key and enabled Turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution. Otherwise, leave resolution handling on automatic and check what the encoder sends.
- The stream drops frames or reports poor health. Check whether the upload connection can sustain the selected codec’s recommended bitrate. Test the connection and stream under conditions representative of the actual broadcast.
- The image looks poor despite a 4K setting. A 4K label does not ensure a clean 4K60 signal. Verify the actual encoder output, codec, bitrate and keyframe interval, then inspect the preview and stream-health information.
- You are unsure whether the equipment supports 4K60. Check the specifications of the source, capture device, encoder and computer. YouTube’s general encoder guidance does not establish compatibility for every model.
Do you need a capture card?
Not just to change a Live Control Room resolution setting. YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders, including software such as OBS; a capture card is relevant when your setup needs to ingest a camera or console signal into a computer. A card does not itself enable 4K60 in Control Room, and its compatibility depends on the entire signal chain. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance for encoder workflows.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel playing uploaded video 24/7 rather than broadcast a live camera or console feed, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud:
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not camera feeds, and streams to YouTube only. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
