In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, turn monetization on under Edit > Monetization, then choose automatic, scheduled, or manual mid-rolls. YouTube recommends automatic placement for most streams; scheduled breaks let you set a repeatable interval, and manual breaks let you choose a moment. None guarantees that an ad will run—or that every viewer will see one—so use pauses and transitions to reduce disruptive interruptions.
Set up mid-roll ads in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
- Start a stream from the Stream tab, or schedule one from Manage.
- Open Edit > Monetization and make sure monetization is on.
- Choose Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual for mid-rolls.
- If you choose scheduled breaks, select an interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. If you choose manual, insert breaks from Live Control Room while the stream is running.
Revenue from live Watch Page ads requires accepting YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module. Eligibility can vary; check the monetization options available in your own Studio account.
Choose the ad-break mode that fits your stream

For gaming streams, a match transition, loading screen, intermission, or planned pause is generally a less disruptive moment to offer a manual break than a live fight or a key explanation. This is a timing principle, not a guarantee about ad delivery.
Use Delay ads around important moments
In automatic mode, Delay ads in Live Control Room delays mid-rolls for 10 minutes. YouTube displays a five-second countdown before ads resume. YouTube notes that manually placed mid-rolls still display while this delay feature is on; if you rely on manual breaks, account for that distinction when deciding when to insert them.

Understand what viewers will—and will not—see
YouTube’s ad systems decide whether a particular slot serves an ad. A configured cadence or a creator-inserted slot is an opportunity for an ad, not a promise of delivery. Some viewers may see no ad and keep watching; viewers who do receive an ad rejoin after it ends or they skip it. YouTube describes its approach this way: “Our ad systems decide which ad slots may get an ad based on a number of factors to best balance viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values.” YouTube Help also explains that a mid-roll slot does not guarantee an ad will run.
YouTube reported that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour. That January 2024 platform-reported comparison averaged channels that enabled live automatic mid-rolls against channels that did not across 207 countries; it is not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel.

Take a break without ending the stream
YouTube’s Take a Break feature lets you show an away screen for 1, 3, or 5 minutes. Eligible viewers may see ads; when ads do not run, viewers see an away slate. The countdown reaching zero does not end the break automatically: you must end it in Live Control Room.
You can select a custom slate from your video library if it is public or unlisted and allows embedding. YouTube’s instructions also describe adding the overlay as a browser source in an encoder. This feature is separate from the mid-roll schedule.

Optional manual control with Stream Deck
YouTube Help documents an option to insert ads with an Elgato Stream Deck by downloading the YouTube plugin. It is optional: manual breaks can also be controlled from Live Control Room, and the device is not required for automatic or scheduled ads. Confirm current device and plugin compatibility before choosing a particular model.
What is—and is not—specific to 24/7 streams
YouTube’s published live-ad guidance describes general controls for live streams; it does not establish a separate ad schedule, maximum stream duration, or ad-delivery guarantee for a stream running continuously. Check the settings available in your current Live Control Room rather than assuming a special 24/7 rule.

Troubleshoot common ad-break problems
- Monetization or mid-roll choices are unavailable: Confirm monetization is on under Edit > Monetization and check your channel’s eligibility and required Watch Page Monetization Module in Studio.
- No ad appeared at the scheduled interval: An interval configures timing; it does not guarantee that an ad will be served. YouTube’s ad systems determine whether a slot gets an ad.
- Ads feel poorly timed in automatic mode: Consider a lower frequency, or use Delay ads for an important stretch. Automatic placement aims for natural breakpoints but cannot promise that every interruption will be avoided.
- A manual ad appeared despite Delay ads: YouTube says manually placed mid-rolls still display when the delay feature is on. Avoid inserting one during the period you intend to protect.
- The away screen is still showing after its countdown: End the Take a Break period in Live Control Room; it does not end automatically.
