1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo show the current story title in an OBS scene, add a Text source, enable Read from file, and select a text file containing the title. OBS displays what is in that file; a person or an external process must update it when the story changes. Adding the source does not automatically connect OBS to a story feed.
Set up a file-backed title in OBS
- Select the scene. In the Scenes dock, choose the scene where the title should appear. If you need a new one, add it there. OBS scenes are made from sources, which are layered; sources higher in the Sources list appear above those below them. See OBS’s overview of scenes and sources.
- Add a Text source. In the Sources dock, select the add control and choose the available Text source. OBS offers Text (GDI+) on Windows and Text (Freetype 2) on macOS and Linux. The OBS documentation marks Freetype 2 as deprecated on Windows, so use the source type available in your installed version. See OBS Text Sources.
- Point the source to the title file. In the Text source properties, enable Read from file and choose the file containing the current story title. With this option enabled, OBS reads the text from the selected file rather than the source’s manually entered Text property. Keep the file accessible at the same location while OBS is running.
- Make the overlay readable and visible. Enter or adjust the title’s styling in the source properties, then use the preview to position and resize it. Keep the Text source above any video or graphic source that would cover it. For precise placement, OBS also provides Edit Transform controls. See OBS’s scene and source controls.
- Check the update and scene. Change the text file and confirm the displayed title reflects the change. Then test the whole scene before starting the stream; check that the title remains legible over the video and does not cover important content. OBS recommends testing scenes and settings before an initial stream. See OBS’s overview.
Make the title change when the story changes
The file-backed source handles display, not story selection. Decide what system determines the current story and how it will update the file. For a manually operated stream, an operator can replace the title whenever the story changes. For an automated workflow, the process that knows which story is current must write that title into the selected file. OBS’s Text source documentation does not specify a story feed, file format, or update schedule; those are part of your own workflow.
Choose an update method
| Approach | Best suited to | What you need to manage |
|---|---|---|
| File-backed Text source | A person or existing process can write the current title to a text file. | Keep the file path available to OBS and ensure someone or something updates its contents at each story change. |
| OBS script or WebSocket integration | An existing script or external application can interact with OBS sources. | Build and maintain the integration, test that it changes the intended source, and secure the connection. OBS documents scripting and WebSocket capabilities, but does not provide a ready-made story-feed connector in the cited guidance. |
OBS supports Python and Lua scripts, and its built-in WebSocket endpoint lets external applications and scripts interact with OBS. WebSocket is included by default in OBS Studio 28 and later; the OBS Remote Control Guide recommends protecting it with a password. These capabilities can be used as part of a custom automation, but you still need a source for the story data and logic for when to update the title. Read the OBS Remote Control Guide.
Connect OBS to YouTube and protect the stream key
In YouTube’s encoder workflow, use the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room in the encoder’s stream settings. For the scheduled-stream workflow, YouTube’s instructions say to start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and select Go live. Keep the stream key private: do not place it in the title file, overlay, or other public material. See YouTube’s instructions for live streaming with an encoder.

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish what happens to one uninterrupted stream lasting 12 hours or longer, so it should not be treated as a promise that a continuous 24/7 broadcast will be archived. It also does not guarantee uninterrupted operation of OBS, the encoder, or the process updating the title. See YouTube’s live streaming guidance.
Check these failure points before relying on the overlay
- The title does not appear: confirm the Text source is visible, its file-read option is enabled, the selected file contains text, and the source is above any source that might cover it.
- The old title remains: check that the operator or external process updated the exact file selected in the Text source, then verify the change in the OBS preview.
- The title is hard to read or obscured: adjust its styling, position, or size in the preview and review the source order against the full scene.
- An automated change does not reach OBS: verify that the script or external application is connected to the intended OBS source and that its update logic matches the story schedule. OBS’s documented interfaces do not supply the story-feed connection for you.
- The title or stream key is exposed: remove the key from any public-facing text or graphic and treat WebSocket authentication as part of securing an external control connection.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded videos live without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not go live from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only. This is not an OBS story-title automation feature: a changing title still needs its own update workflow.
