You can limit game time with built-in settings: on iPhone, use Screen Time to set a daily allowance for the Games category or selected games; on Android, set a timer for each game in Digital Wellbeing. For a child’s device, use Screen Time on iPhone or Family Link and available parental controls on Android.
Set a game limit on iPhone
- Open Settings > Screen Time > App Limits.
- Tap Add Limit.
- Select Games to limit the category, or expand it and select the specific games you want to include. If you select multiple apps or categories together, the allowance applies to that selection.
- Set the time allowance and tap Add.
To give yourself different allowances on different days, use Customize Days while setting the limit. Apple’s instructions cover category and selected-app limits in Set schedules with Screen Time on iPhone.
Set limits for a child
Open Screen Time and select the child under the Family section before adding App Limits. Apple’s Screen Time guide for families explains managing a child’s settings. Apple also says Screen Time usage reports and settings can sync across iPhone, iPad, and Mac when Share Across Devices is enabled; the devices and configuration in your family setup determine how that option applies.
Set a game timer on Android
- Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing & parental controls, then tap App timers. The label or route may differ by device; if needed, search Settings for “Digital Wellbeing” or “app timers.”
- Choose the game you want to limit.
- Tap Set timer, choose the allowance, and tap OK.
Google says that when time runs out, “the app closes and its icon dims.” Timers reset at midnight. To use the game again before then, delete its timer. Google notes that steps vary by device and that app timers may not work with some work or school accounts. See Manage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing.

Set a child’s game limit on Android
Family Link
- In the parent’s Family Link app, select the child.
- Open Screen time > Time limits > App limits.
- Choose the game, tap Set limit, select the hours and minutes, then save.
Google’s Set app limits on your child’s device page gives the Family Link instructions.
On-device parental controls
Android also documents parental controls configured on the device, including app limits, daily limits, downtime, and blocked apps. Availability and setup depend on the device and family configuration; consult Google’s Set up parental controls on Android instructions rather than assuming every phone has the same menu.
