For a stable automated YouTube stream, choose your output resolution and frame rate first, set the bitrate YouTube recommends for your ingest codec, use constant bitrate (CBR), and set a keyframe interval of 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Then confirm your measured upload capacity can sustain the stream with headroom, and test the encoder’s start, stop, and recovery behavior before relying on it unattended.
Choose the right bitrate for your resolution, frame rate, and codec
Bitrate is not one-size-fits-all: YouTube’s recommended ingest rate changes with the output mode and codec. The table gives YouTube’s recommended values in Mbps for streams checked on 2026-10-03; its Help page does not display a publication or update date. These are encoder input recommendations, not guaranteed viewer quality. YouTube transcodes streams for playback, and scene complexity and encoder quality also affect the result. YouTube’s encoder settings lists the full current table.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 / H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p60 | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p30 | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
Recommended bitrate is the normal target
YouTube also lists minimum bitrates, which are lower limits rather than the usual target when your connection can sustain the recommendation. For H.264, the minima are 6 Mbps at 1080p60, 5 Mbps at 1080p30, 3 Mbps at 720p60 and 720p30, and 0.4 Mbps at 480p30 and 360p30. For AV1 or H.265, the corresponding minima are 4 Mbps, 4 Mbps, 2 Mbps, and 0.3 Mbps. Higher resolutions have separate minimums in YouTube’s complete table. Use the row for your exact codec and output mode; do not substitute a minimum or copy the AV1/H.265 figure into an H.264 setup.
Set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval
In the encoder’s video output settings, set bitrate control to CBR (constant bitrate) and keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube’s recommendation, checked on 2026-10-03, is “Recommended 2 seconds” and “Do not exceed 4 seconds.” Bitrate and keyframe interval are separate controls: hitting the bitrate target does not fix an interval that is too long. YouTube’s encoder settings also specifies supported ingest formats and protocols.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the encoder asks for frames instead of seconds
Convert seconds to frames by multiplying the interval by the output frame rate. At 30 fps, set 60 frames for a 2-second interval; at 60 fps, set 120 frames. A 4-second interval would be 120 frames at 30 fps or 240 frames at 60 fps, but the recommended setting remains 2 seconds.
Codec, protocol, and special cases
- YouTube’s encoder page lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Use a codec your encoder supports and select its corresponding bitrate column.
- YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Choose RTMPS if your encoder offers it.
- For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S); the cited page says AV1 is not supported for HDR. It lists 10-bit depth for HDR and 8-bit for SDR.
- For 2160p (4K), YouTube says the low-latency improvement option is unavailable and streams use normal latency.
Check upload capacity and leave headroom
Compare the stream’s outbound bitrate—not your download speed—with a real upload measurement. YouTube recommends 20% headroom and notes that other users or devices sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to the encoder. Its guidance says: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” See YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube’s network and streaming tips.

- Use the recommended bitrate for your codec and output mode as the stream-rate baseline, then allow at least the recommended 20% headroom.
- Check the connection at the location and time you plan to stream. A speed test result is not a guarantee that capacity will remain steady when the network is busy.
- If you send a primary and backup stream, budget for both outbound rates rather than checking only one.
- A wired Ethernet connection can remove a variable wireless link when your encoder and network equipment support it, but a cable cannot increase the upstream capacity supplied by your internet service.
Configure YouTube and the encoder for recurring or unattended streams
- Choose output mode in the encoder. Select the intended resolution and frame rate, then choose a supported codec and its recommended bitrate from the table. In Live Control Room, YouTube says the encoder needs resolution, frame rate, and bitrate specified; YouTube detects other encoder settings. Manual resolution selection is available with a custom stream key and manual settings enabled. Details are on YouTube’s encoder settings page.
- Set stream controls. Set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, then choose RTMPS if available.
- Create or schedule the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Copy its stream URL and key into the encoder. Custom or reusable stream keys and saved stream settings can simplify recurring events; follow YouTube’s stream management guidance.
- Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish or share it; reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
- Decide who starts and stops the broadcast. YouTube’s stream settings include Auto-start and Auto-stop controls that allow starting or stopping from the encoder. Enable them only if they match your workflow. They do not ensure that a particular encoder can wake a computer, run on a schedule, or recover unattended; check the encoder’s own documentation and test it.
- Rehearse the full operation. Send a test with representative motion and audio. Confirm the preview appears, check stream health and messages while live, and test the intended schedule, restart, and failover behavior before relying on it. YouTube’s setup steps are documented at YouTube’s encoder setup page.
Troubleshoot bitrate, keyframe, and automation problems
- Stream health reports connection instability: measure upload capacity again, check outbound rather than download speed, reduce competing network use, and confirm there is headroom beyond the stream rate.
- Encoder settings are rejected or the stream will not connect: verify the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate match a supported configuration; check the stream URL and key; try RTMPS if supported.
- Keyframe setting is in frames: calculate interval seconds × frame rate. Use 60 at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps for the recommended two seconds.
- Stream stops when the computer or encoder stops: YouTube’s Auto-start/Auto-stop controls do not keep an encoder process running. Confirm that the chosen encoder can operate on the intended schedule and recover from a failure, then rehearse that behavior.
- Quality looks different from the incoming feed: YouTube transcodes the feed for viewers. The ingest bitrate is not a promise of a specific playback rendition or visual result.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than a locally operated encoder, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the file as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
