How to Set Bitrate in OBS for YouTube Live Streaming

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In OBS, set your live-stream bitrate under Settings → Output → Video Bitrate. Set the stream’s resolution and frame rate under Settings → Video, then choose a YouTube live-ingest bitrate that matches the codec and output settings. Keep enough upload headroom for a stable connection, use CBR with a 2-second keyframe interval, and test before going live.

Where to set bitrate in OBS

  1. Open Output settings: In OBS, select Settings → Output. In Simple output mode, set the streaming Video Bitrate field directly. OBS notes that the appropriate value depends on your upload speed and the streaming service’s limits. If you use Advanced output mode, locate the streaming encoder’s bitrate control on the Output page.
  2. Set the stream’s picture settings: Select Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to the resolution you want to send, and choose the desired Common FPS Value.
  3. Choose the matching YouTube live recommendation: Use YouTube’s live encoder settings table for the ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate you have selected. The H.264 examples are listed below.
  4. Set the rate control and keyframes: For YouTube live ingest, use CBR (constant bitrate) and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  5. Check upload capacity and test: Leave bandwidth headroom, run a test with representative gameplay, audio, and motion, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before and during the event.

For the current OBS and YouTube controls and recommendations, see the OBS streaming guidelines and YouTube’s live encoder settings.

H.264 bitrate recommendations for YouTube live

The figures below are YouTube’s live-stream ingest recommendations for H.264, not its separate encoding recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos. YouTube’s live recommendations depend on the codec, resolution, and frame rate. The current figures shown here were accessed on 2026-10-03.

Output resolution and frame rate H.264 live bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps

YouTube’s table also provides separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265. Do not apply the H.264 figures automatically if OBS is sending a different codec; check the current live settings table for the codec actually being ingested.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How much upload speed do you need?

Your configured bitrate must fit within the connection’s stable upload capacity, not just its best speed-test result. YouTube advises leaving room for bandwidth variation: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” Its network guidance also says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth.

OBS’s troubleshooting guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when setting bitrate against upload speed. Treat that as a rough starting estimate, not a guarantee: other devices or applications may share the connection, and a fluctuating connection can still drop frames.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Test the connection at the location and time you expect to stream, preferably over wired Ethernet.
  • Account for audio and any other stream traffic when evaluating total bandwidth.
  • If your connection cannot reliably support the recommended bitrate with headroom, lower the bitrate and, if needed, choose a lower resolution or frame rate.

For a given codec, resolution, and frame rate, use YouTube’s recommendation as a target—not as a reason to exceed what your connection can sustain.

Test stream health before the event

  1. Run a private or unlisted test with the same OBS scene, game, audio sources, and settings you plan to use.
  2. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages while the test is running. Include fast gameplay or other high-motion material if that resembles the real broadcast.
  3. Watch OBS for dropped frames and connection warnings. If the stream is unstable, reduce the bitrate and reassess the connection; repeat the test before relying on the new setting.

OBS explains that “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server is not stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” A clean start does not prove the connection will remain stable throughout a longer event, so keep monitoring after going live.

Troubleshooting bitrate and dropped frames

Symptom Likely cause What to try
OBS reports dropped frames or the stream disconnects The connection to YouTube may be unstable, or the configured bitrate may be too high for available upload capacity. Lower the bitrate, check for competing uploads or other network use, and test again. If necessary, reduce resolution or frame rate to use a lower matching YouTube recommendation.
YouTube preview or stream health reports an issue The ingest settings may not match the stream being sent, or the upload connection may be inconsistent. Confirm the codec, output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in OBS; compare them with YouTube’s current live encoder guidance and check the connection during a representative test.
Bitrate is set to a recommended value, but frames still drop A published recommendation cannot account for every shared or variable connection. Leave more headroom by lowering the bitrate, then reassess stability. Do not assume a speed test’s peak upload result is continuously available to OBS.
Unsure whether the YouTube number applies The figures differ by codec, resolution, and frame rate; prerecorded-video upload guidance is also separate. Verify OBS’s actual output settings and consult YouTube’s live-ingest table for that codec and combination.

OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide and YouTube’s live encoder settings are useful references if a problem persists.
