To stream an OBS playlist to YouTube with constant bitrate, open Settings → Output, set Output Mode to Advanced if needed, then choose CBR for the streaming encoder’s rate control and enter a video bitrate in kbps. The playlist is a separate OBS source: add it with VLC Video, then connect OBS to your YouTube stream key. Choose a bitrate for your codec, resolution and frame rate, and make sure your connection can sustain it.
Set up the YouTube stream and OBS playlist
Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a live stream.
- Copy the stream key from YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream and enter the key using the YouTube connection option shown in your OBS version. The key authorizes YouTube to accept the encoder feed, so keep it private. See YouTube’s instructions for streaming with an encoder.
Add and loop the playlist
- Choose or create the OBS scene you want to broadcast.
- Add a VLC Video source and add the media files to its playlist. VLC must be installed; if OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC.
- Check the source properties. Loop Playlist is documented as on by default, while Shuffle Playlist defaults to off. The playlist source controls what plays; it does not set the stream bitrate. See OBS’s media-source documentation.
If you are streaming one file rather than a playlist, OBS’s Media Source can loop it, but its Loop setting defaults to off. Enable it if the file should restart automatically.
Set CBR and choose a video bitrate
- In OBS, open Settings → Output. If the streaming encoder controls are limited or absent, change Output Mode to Advanced.
- Under the streaming encoder settings, set Rate Control to CBR (constant bitrate) and enter the video bitrate in kbps. Control names and available options vary by OBS version, operating system and encoder. OBS documents streaming controls under Output; see its streaming overview.
- Choose the bitrate for the codec, ingestion resolution and frame rate you will actually send. For two common H.264 targets, YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists:
| H.264 ingestion format | YouTube minimum video bitrate | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s H.264 figures for the specified formats, not universal OBS defaults. YouTube publishes different guidance for other resolutions and for AV1 or H.265; use the matching row in YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table. A given bitrate does not guarantee identical visual quality for every video: static scenes and fast motion place different demands on encoding.
Check keyframes, audio and transport
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Video codec and frame rate: YouTube’s standard RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, up to 60 fps. Confirm that your selected OBS encoder and workflow support the codec you choose. The example bitrate table above is specifically for H.264.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Its advanced settings recommend 128 Kbps for stereo audio or 384 Kbps for 5.1 surround, with 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1 sample rate. These audio values are separate from the video bitrate.
- Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport. Follow the requirements for your chosen protocol and any specialized HDR or HLS setup rather than assuming standard settings cover every workflow.
For the full requirements, consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make sure your upload connection can sustain the stream
The selected video bitrate must fit your reliable upload capacity, with room for audio and normal network variation. YouTube recommends testing upload speed, leaving 20% upload headroom, and accounting for a backup stream if you use one. A bitrate that exceeds what the connection can sustain can cause interruptions even when OBS is set to CBR.
Before a public broadcast, test with audio and movement similar to the planned playlist. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages as well as OBS. YouTube’s live streaming tips explain testing and stream-health checks.

Troubleshoot common problems
- No CBR option is visible: Switch OBS Output Mode to Advanced, then inspect the streaming encoder controls. The exact labels depend on the selected encoder and OBS version.
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS—for example, 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- The playlist stops instead of restarting: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled in the VLC Video source. For a single Media Source file, enable its separate Loop property; it is off by default.
- OBS drops frames or disconnects: Lower the video bitrate and test again. An unstable Wi-Fi connection may be the cause; OBS recommends trying a wired connection as a troubleshooting step. See OBS’s dropped-frames guidance.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Recheck that the stream uses CBR, the bitrate matches the codec and format, the keyframe interval is within YouTube’s guidance, and the upload connection has headroom. Use YouTube’s stream-health messages to identify the reported issue.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube playlist stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to running OBS on a computer at home: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
