Choose your output resolution and frame rate first, then set the video bitrate to YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for that combination. For a conservative 720p30 starting point, use 6 Mbps video, AAC stereo at 128 kbps, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS—provided the VPS can encode the source in real time and sustain the required upload rate.
Choose the resolution and bitrate together
YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on the ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 video recommendations, not total stream rates; audio uses additional bandwidth.
| Output | H.264 video bitrate recommended by YouTube |
|---|---|
| 360p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
YouTube says its recommended ranges are based on the ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. These values are for H.264; do not apply them as though they were universal across codecs. See YouTube’s encoder settings for its current recommendations and additional codec guidance.
A practical first setting
If the source is suitable and the VPS can keep up, 720p30 is a reasonable first configuration: 6 Mbps video, 128 kbps AAC stereo, and a two-second GOP. Move to a higher resolution or frame rate only after testing the actual encode and network under sustained load.

Set FFmpeg’s bitrate and publish to YouTube
This illustrative command loops a file and sends it to a YouTube RTMPS ingest endpoint:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -b:v 6000k -maxrate 6000k -bufsize 12000k -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "rtmps://<ingest-address>/<stream-key>"
It assumes 30 fps output: 60 frames per GOP gives a two-second keyframe interval. It is an example, not a universal tested command. Check your source’s actual streams and frame rate, and replace the endpoint and key with the values shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private.

- Prepare a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create or select the stream, and retrieve its server URL and stream key. Configure the stream before starting FFmpeg.
- Inspect the input. Confirm the file has the intended video and audio streams and check its frame rate. If there is no audio stream, explicitly map or generate audio as appropriate; the example assumes audio is present.
- Set the video rate.
-b:v 6000ksets the target video bitrate to 6,000 kilobits per second.-maxrate 6000kand-bufsize 12000kconfigure rate-control behavior; the buffer is not extra network capacity, and these options do not guarantee a perfectly flat instantaneous bitrate. - Set audio and keyframes.
-b:a 128ksets AAC audio bitrate. At 30 fps,-g 60requests a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds. If you change frame rate, recalculate the GOP to retain the intended interval. - Use real-time pacing for a file.
-rereads the file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible;-stream_loop -1repeats it continuously. FFmpeg documents real-time pacing for file inputs used in live streaming, but warns against applying a low read rate to a real live input because it can cause packet loss. See FFmpeg documentation. - Publish and verify. Send to the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room, then check the preview, audio, stream health, and warnings before relying on the feed.
YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe frequency, and no keyframe interval over four seconds for typical live encoding. RTMPS is its recommended encrypted extension of RTMP. FFmpeg’s -b:v and -b:a set video and audio bitrates respectively; consult the FFmpeg options reference for option details. If the input is already encoded in a compatible format, stream copy may reduce CPU load, but verify compatibility and output health before using it unattended.
Check whether the VPS can sustain the stream
Budget outbound bandwidth
YouTube advises that total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving about 20% headroom. For the example’s 6 Mbps video plus 128 kbps audio, payload is about 6.13 Mbps before protocol overhead; with that headroom, plan for roughly 7.4 Mbps of sustained outbound capacity. This is arithmetic from the settings, not a provider guarantee. Include any backup stream bitrate in the capacity calculation. See YouTube encoder settings and YouTube streaming tips.

Measure the VPS’s route to the ingest service and check the provider’s traffic allowance, outbound limits, and port policies. A nominal network speed alone does not establish that the path will sustain the stream.
Test encoding capacity, not just advertised VPS size
There is no universal vCPU or RAM minimum established for this workload. Encoding load varies with resolution, frame rate, codec, x264 preset, image complexity, concurrent services, and whether the VPS encodes or only forwards a compatible pre-encoded stream. No generic small-plan label guarantees real-time encoding.

- Run a representative video with motion and audio for a sustained test.
- Watch FFmpeg’s reported speed and CPU use; output must keep pace with real time rather than slowly falling behind.
- Monitor YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and warnings while the test runs.
- If encoding cannot keep up, lower resolution or frame rate, choose a faster x264 preset, or use a VPS with more dedicated compute, then test again.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the intended stream and checking stream health. Its health indicators can surface bitrate, codec, audio, and keyframe problems. See encoder settings and streaming tips.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prepare for nonstop operation
A bitrate setting does not make a stream uninterrupted. Before leaving it unattended, confirm the video and audio in the Live Control Room preview, review ingest health, and leave a test running long enough to expose resource, network, or process problems. A nonstop setup also needs process supervision and alerting so someone can respond if FFmpeg exits or the connection fails.

For a conventional H.264 workflow, RTMPS is the straightforward choice. YouTube’s protocol comparison describes HLS and DASH as segment-based alternatives that generally have greater latency, though they support other codecs and high-resolution use cases. Choose them only when the workflow calls for their trade-offs; see YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube reports low or unstable bitrate: Check sustained outbound capacity, provider traffic or port limits, and route quality. Recalculate for video plus audio and any backup stream; lower the output rate if the path cannot sustain it.
- FFmpeg speed drops below real time: The VPS is not encoding this workload fast enough. Reduce resolution or frame rate, use a faster preset, or move to more suitable compute; retest under representative load.
- Video appears but audio is missing: The source may not contain the audio stream assumed by the command. Inspect and map the correct stream, or add an audio source deliberately.
- Keyframe or ingest-health warning appears: Confirm the GOP duration matches two seconds and does not exceed four seconds, accounting for the actual frame rate. Check the codec and bitrate against the selected YouTube settings.
- The stream will not connect: Recheck the ingest address and stream key in Live Control Room, ensure the key is current and private, and verify outbound network and port restrictions with the VPS provider.
- The process stops during a long run: Inspect FFmpeg logs and host resource/network events, then configure process supervision and alerting. A successful short preview is not proof of continuous operation.
