How to Set FFmpeg NVENC Options for a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Loop in India

YouTube’s 2160p60 live bitrate recommendation is 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for HEVC/AV1. Here’s how to adapt FFmpeg NVENC settings and safely test a loop.

For a 4K/2160p60 YouTube Live loop, use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS. YouTube’s current English-US live guidance recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for HEVC or AV1 at this resolution and frame rate. The right NVENC command depends on your GPU, FFmpeg build, source file, and YouTube ingest settings, so treat the template below as a starting point—not a tested universal command—and verify it with a private or unlisted test stream before going live.

Choose the codec and bitrate

Use YouTube’s live-streaming recommendations, not its separate upload recommendations: upload presets are for video files and may specify different bitrates. The figures below are YouTube Help’s current English-US recommendations for a 2160p60 live stream, accessed in 2026. They describe platform guidance, not a guarantee of stability or a required broadband-plan speed.

Codec YouTube-recommended bitrate at 2160p60 Minimum listed by YouTube Practical consideration
H.264 50 Mbps 14 Mbps h264_nvenc is a sensible starting point for compatibility, provided your GPU and FFmpeg build support it.
HEVC/H.265 35 Mbps 10 Mbps Use hevc_nvenc only if your GPU, FFmpeg build, and selected YouTube ingest path support it.
AV1 35 Mbps 10 Mbps Use an AV1 NVENC encoder only if the installed GPU and FFmpeg build expose it and the ingest path accepts it.

The lower minimums are not good targets for a reliable 4K60 broadcast: YouTube’s recommended values are substantially higher. The video bitrate is also not the same as the total upload capacity you need. Measure sustained upload on the actual streaming connection, account for other traffic on it, and leave headroom rather than treating an advertised download speed as evidence that the stream will hold.

Check the source and local encoder before building the command

Confirm the file is actually 4K60

NVENC encodes the frames you give it; choosing a 4K60 bitrate does not turn a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate file into native 4K60. Confirm the source dimensions, frame rate, audio stream, and color format with your local media-inspection tools. If the source is not 3840×2160 at 60 fps, decide deliberately whether to scale or change frame rate; conversion can add processing load and does not restore missing detail or motion.

Confirm FFmpeg and GPU capabilities

Encoder names and available presets, tuning values, rate-control modes, and codec support vary by GPU generation and FFmpeg build. Check the encoders and options exposed by the FFmpeg binary you will run, and check the installed GPU’s documented capabilities. Do not assume that a flag accepted by one build will work on another. NVIDIA’s FFmpeg/NVENC guidance provides a high-quality starting point, but it does not establish that every system can encode 4K60 with the same settings.

Build a cautious FFmpeg command

This H.264 example shows the main settings to adapt. Replace the input, ingest URL, and stream key placeholders with your own values from YouTube Live Control Room. The example is not a verified end-to-end command for every FFmpeg build or media file: in particular, confirm loop behavior and option availability locally before relying on it.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "INPUT.mp4"
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-c:v h264_nvenc -preset p6 -tune hq -rc cbr
  -b:v 50M -g 120 -bf 2
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ac 2
  -f flv "YOUTUBE_RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"

Use the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in your own YouTube Live setup; do not publish or share the key. Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots, and logs where possible. If your build rejects an option, consult that build’s FFmpeg help and remove or replace only settings it does not support. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest.

What the important options do

  • -re asks FFmpeg to read the input at its native rate rather than sending a file as fast as it can be read. Confirm the timing behavior with your chosen input and build.
  • -stream_loop -1 is commonly used to request repeated input, but loop syntax and boundary behavior must be checked against your installed FFmpeg and tested with the actual file. Inspect the transition for a picture jump, audio click or gap, timestamp problem, or reconnect.
  • -map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream. -map 0:a:0? selects the first audio stream if one exists; if the file has no audio, check the resulting output and YouTube stream health rather than assuming the optional mapping behaves identically in every setup.
  • -c:v h264_nvenc selects NVIDIA’s H.264 hardware encoder. For HEVC or AV1, substitute the encoder name available in your local build and use the bitrate recommended for that codec; do not switch codecs without verifying GPU and ingest support.
  • -preset p6 and -tune hq are quality-oriented starting points where available. NVIDIA’s high-quality live guidance points to higher presets such as p6 or p7, but slower settings use more resources and may not sustain 60 fps on every system.
  • -rc cbr selects constant-bitrate rate control, as YouTube specifies for live encoding. -b:v 50M sets the H.264 video target to YouTube’s 2160p60 recommendation. If you use HEVC or AV1, the recommended target is 35 Mbps instead.
  • -g 120 sets a 120-frame GOP in builds where this option maps to the encoder’s keyframe interval. At 60 fps, that is two seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and lists four seconds as the maximum; confirm the encoder’s actual keyframe behavior.
  • -bf 2 requests two B-frames. YouTube recommends two in its advanced encoder settings; NVIDIA notes that B-frames can improve compression but add reordering latency. Confirm support and behavior on your encoder and ingest path.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ac 2 re-encodes audio to stereo AAC at YouTube’s recommended 128 kbps. YouTube also lists MP3 as an accepted RTMP/RTMPS audio codec. Check the source’s audio codec, channel layout, and sample rate before deciding whether to copy or re-encode.
  • -f flv selects the output container commonly used for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Use the ingest URL provided in YouTube Live Control Room rather than guessing a server address.

The template omits a maximum bitrate and VBV buffer setting because the right values and their interaction with CBR depend on the installed encoder. NVIDIA discusses CBR and buffer choices, but YouTube’s live bitrate recommendation is the basis for the target above. Check your FFmpeg/NVENC build’s guidance before adding further rate-control flags.

For HEVC or AV1

Only change the encoder after confirming that the GPU and FFmpeg build expose it and YouTube accepts it for the selected ingest configuration. Set the target video bitrate to 35 Mbps for either codec at 2160p60, then retain the two-second keyframe target and other compatible settings. YouTube’s HDR guidance is a separate workflow: it identifies HEVC and has additional stream-key and protocol requirements. Do not add HDR flags to an SDR source; YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit for SDR.

Set up YouTube Live and test the loop

  1. Prepare the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Select the appropriate live-stream setup and copy the ingest URL and stream key supplied there. Keep the key private. Use the settings for a live ingest, not YouTube’s file-upload bitrate table.
  2. Check the source and local system. Confirm that the file contains the expected video and audio streams, that the GPU exposes the chosen NVENC encoder, and that the FFmpeg options in the template exist in your build.
  3. Run a private or unlisted test. Use a representative section or the intended loop and check YouTube’s stream health and messages while FFmpeg is running. YouTube recommends testing before going live.
  4. Inspect the loop boundary. Listen and watch across the transition for a visible discontinuity, audio click or gap, timing issue, or stream reconnect. A file that looks fine on its own may still have a poor transition when repeated.
  5. Measure the real upload connection. Test sustained upload from the location and connection the encoder will use, while accounting for household or office traffic. If the stream reports instability, reduce competing traffic or revise the setup and test again; a nominal broadband download figure does not establish a reliable upload.
  6. Start the public broadcast only after the test is clean. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages and the FFmpeg process after switching to the intended audience.

Copyright, looping, and monetization considerations

Looping a file does not give you rights to its music, video, or other included material, and a continuous broadcast is not itself permission to use someone else’s work. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and check the relevant YouTube rules before broadcasting. A repeated video also does not automatically become original or qualify for monetization because it is live; channel monetization decisions depend on YouTube’s policies and review. For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
FFmpeg says the NVENC encoder or an option is unavailable The installed build or GPU does not expose that codec or flag. Check the local FFmpeg encoder and option listings and the GPU’s codec support. Use a supported encoder and settings; do not copy options from a different system blindly.
YouTube shows unstable stream health or dropped frames The sustained upload path may not support the selected video bitrate under real conditions, or competing traffic may be using capacity. Measure upload at the streaming location, reduce other network traffic, and retest. Remember that YouTube’s bitrate number is the video target, not a promise that a connection at exactly that rate is sufficient.
The video does not appear as 4K60 The source may have different dimensions or frame rate, the encoder may be failing to sustain output, or YouTube may not have settled on the expected stream format. Check source properties, FFmpeg output, and YouTube stream health. Do not assume that setting a bitrate or GOP changes source resolution or frame rate.
The picture or sound jumps at the repeat point The end and beginning of the media may not form a clean transition, or loop timing may behave differently in the installed FFmpeg build. Test the boundary locally and in a private/unlisted stream. Adjust or edit the source transition and validate the selected looping method before relying on it continuously.
The stream will not connect The ingest URL or stream key may be wrong, the key may have been changed, or the selected ingest configuration may not accept the codec or protocol. Copy the current RTMPS details from YouTube Live Control Room, check that the key remains active and private, and confirm codec support for that ingest setup.
Audio is missing or rejected The input may have no audio stream, or its codec, layout, or sample rate may not suit the chosen output path. Inspect the input streams and the output mapping. Decide whether to encode AAC stereo at the recommended 128 kbps or use another accepted option supported by the source and ingest path.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the YouTube loop to continue without leaving a PC or home connection on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a camera feed.
