For a 24/7 yoga stream, use FFmpeg’s HTTP -reconnect options only when FFmpeg reads an HTTP source. They do not reconnect an outgoing YouTube RTMP/RTMPS publish connection. For output recovery, FFmpeg documents the FIFO muxer with -attempt_recovery and a retry wait. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds); none of these settings guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast.
Choose options for the failure you need to recover from
A stream can fail at its source, on the connection between FFmpeg and YouTube, or because the FFmpeg process or host stops. The option family depends on where the failure occurs:
- FFmpeg is reading an HTTP or HLS source and that input disconnects: HTTP protocol options such as
-reconnectmay help recover the input. - FFmpeg is publishing to YouTube and the outgoing RTMP/RTMPS connection fails: HTTP reconnect options are not the fix. Use FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer output recovery pattern.
- FFmpeg exits, the machine restarts, or the source becomes invalid: FIFO recovery alone does not restart the process or repair the source. Those require separate operational measures.
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation describes the input-side options. Its FIFO muxer documentation gives an output-recovery example using RTMP. The documented behavior applies generally; the reviewed official material does not specify India-only flags, an India-specific ingest endpoint, or different reconnect semantics by location.
Recover an outgoing YouTube connection with FIFO
For an already-produced video and audio stream, this adapts FFmpeg’s documented FIFO/RTMP example. Replace the input, mapping, ingest endpoint, and private stream key with the values for your actual source and YouTube Live Control Room setup.

"rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_PRIVATE_STREAM_KEY"
This is an adaptation of FFmpeg’s example, not a tested command for every input, FFmpeg build, or YouTube account. Check the options and syntax supported by your installed FFmpeg binary. Select the exact RTMPS ingest endpoint and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room; protect the key and do not expose it in shell history, logs, screenshots, or published commands. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the stream to Google’s servers.
What the recovery flags do
-f fifo -fifo_format flvwraps the FLV output in the FIFO muxer.-attempt_recovery 1enables recovery attempts when the output fails.-recovery_wait_time 1sets the wait between attempts to one second. FFmpeg’s documented example uses this interval and retries indefinitely while the process remains active; verify behavior against your installed version.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1lets encoding continue if the FIFO queue fills by dropping packets. This can mean missing parts of the stream. Without dropping, FFmpeg may instead block while the muxer catches up, so choose according to whether packet loss or a stalled pipeline is the more acceptable failure mode.
Retries cannot make recovery invisible to viewers, and they cannot fix an invalid key, expired or broken input URL, account setup problem, or permanently failed source. Check FFmpeg’s logs and YouTube Live Control Room messages when recovery does not work.

Add HTTP reconnects only for an HTTP input
If FFmpeg also reads a live HTTP/HLS source, place the HTTP protocol options before that input’s -i. The following shows syntax to adapt, not a universal command:
ffmpeg -reconnect 1
-reconnect_streamed 1
-reconnect_on_network_error 1
-reconnect_delay_max 30
-i "HTTP_INPUT_URL"
... output options ...
The 30-second maximum is an illustrative operator choice, not a recommendation from FFmpeg or YouTube. Check FFmpeg’s HTTP option documentation and your installed build before relying on any option; the online source tracks FFmpeg master and may differ from an older distribution.

Decide whether EOF should trigger a retry
-reconnect_at_eof treats end-of-file as an error and can suit a source expected to continue indefinitely. Do not enable it blindly for a finite file, where EOF is normal. For HTTP status failures, -reconnect_on_http_error can target selected retryable status codes; which codes to retry depends on the source. -reconnect_streamed addresses streamed or non-seekable inputs, while -reconnect_on_network_error covers TCP/TLS errors during connection. None of these input settings supplies recovery for the outgoing RTMP/RTMPS connection.
Set YouTube’s encoder parameters for the chosen mode
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a maximum keyframe interval of four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options and supports up to 60 fps. Set the bitrate for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying one number to every stream. YouTube’s figures below are platform guidance, not measurements of what an Indian internet connection can sustain.

Choose a practical starting mode for yoga
For a mostly static yoga camera, 30 fps may be a reasonable starting point, but that is an editorial inference, not a measured recommendation for a particular Indian connection. Consider image detail, movement, encoder capacity, and sustained upload capacity together. A brief speed-test result does not establish that an uplink will hold its bitrate continuously over a 24/7 broadcast.

Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Confirm the input plays and that FFmpeg maps the video and audio streams you intend to send. Adjust
-map 0:v -map 0:aif your source has a different stream layout. - Copy the current RTMPS ingest endpoint and private stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key secret.
- Run a controlled private or unlisted test with representative movement and audio. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics and messages during the test and broadcast. Check both the YouTube status and FFmpeg logs if output recovery is triggered.
- Plan separately for FFmpeg crashes, machine restarts, resource exhaustion, and source failure. FIFO output retries address a class of publishing failures while FFmpeg remains running; they are not process supervision.
Troubleshoot common reconnect failures
- The stream does not retry after an RTMP/RTMPS disconnect: HTTP
-reconnectflags apply to HTTP input handling, not RTMP output. Configure output recovery with FIFO and confirm the output options are attached to the intended output. - FFmpeg rejects an option: The installed version may not support it, or the option may be placed incorrectly. Check that build’s help and documentation; place HTTP options before their corresponding
-i, and set FIFO/muxer options with the output they control. - The stream resumes with a gap or dropped content: With
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1, packets may be discarded when the queue fills. If you remove that setting, FFmpeg may block while the muxer catches up. Neither choice ensures a seamless viewer experience. - Retries continue but publishing never succeeds: Check the RTMPS endpoint, stream key, YouTube account/setup messages, and whether the input is still valid. Repeating a request cannot repair bad credentials or a permanently unavailable source.
- The broadcast stops even though FIFO recovery was enabled: FIFO does not replace supervision for a process crash, host restart, maintenance, or exhausted resources. A service manager can be configured separately for process supervision; no India-specific supervisor setting is established by the cited FFmpeg or YouTube guidance.
- The selected bitrate produces unstable health: Reassess codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder capacity, and sustained upload capacity. The YouTube bitrate table is not a guarantee of stability on a particular ISP or route.
