How to Set OBS Audio Monitoring for a Continuous YouTube ASMR Stream

To hear your ASMR microphone in OBS while viewers hear it too, set the listening device under Settings > Audio > Advanced > Monitoring Device, then open Edit > Advanced Audio Properties and set the source to Monitoring Enabled. Do not select Monitor Only (mute output) for audio that belongs in the live mix: that mode lets you listen locally but mutes the source for viewers.

Set up OBS monitoring without muting the audience

  1. Choose where you will listen. In OBS, open Settings > Audio and find Advanced > Monitoring Device. Select the headphones or other output where you want to hear the monitor feed. Confirm the selected device is connected and audible.
  2. Choose the source’s monitoring mode. In the main OBS window, open Edit > Advanced Audio Properties. Find the microphone or other ASMR source. Set its monitoring mode to Monitoring Enabled if you want to hear it and include it in the stream output. OBS menu labels can vary by version, so check the labels shown in your installed version.
  3. Check the stream’s audio track. In Advanced Audio Properties, confirm the source is assigned to the audio track used by your YouTube stream. Monitoring controls local listen-back; track assignment determines whether the source is included on the stream’s selected track.
  4. Prevent playback from feeding back into the mic. Use headphones or another listening route that does not send the monitored sound back into the microphone. Keep the listening output at a comfortable level.

What the OBS monitoring modes do

Mode What you hear What viewers hear Use it when
Monitor Off No monitor feed from that source Depends on whether the source is routed to the stream output and its track You do not need local listen-back for that source
Monitor Only (mute output) The source is sent to your monitoring device The source is muted from the output mix You need to hear a source privately, not send it to viewers
Monitoring Enabled The source is sent to your monitoring device The source remains in the output mix, subject to its routing and track assignment You want to hear the source while viewers hear it too

Monitoring is a local listen-back route, separate from the mixer’s level meter. A moving meter confirms signal activity, but it does not tell you how the audio sounds or how loud it seems to a listener.

Check the signal before starting a continuous stream

  1. Listen at the source and in OBS. Confirm the mic or other source is audible at the device, then listen to the signal as it reaches OBS through the selected monitoring device.
  2. Make a representative local recording. Record the kind of quiet speech, handling sounds, pauses, and other audio you intend to use. Listen back before going live; a short, representative test can reveal problems that meters alone cannot.
  3. Test through YouTube. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test using audio and activity similar to the planned broadcast. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and verify that the source is reaching viewers rather than only your headphones.
  4. Keep checking during the broadcast. Continue monitoring audio and video quality and watch YouTube’s stream health. For a continuous stream, a successful initial check does not guarantee that the audio route will remain correct throughout the run.

YouTube audio encoder settings

YouTube’s general guidance for stereo live audio lists AAC or MP3, a 44.1 kHz sample rate, and 128 kbps stereo audio. These are encoder recommendations, not OBS monitoring settings and not evidence of a particular ASMR loudness target or sound quality. Confirm the recommendations in the Live Control Room guidance for the version in use.

Fix common monitoring problems

  • You can hear the mic, but viewers cannot. The source may be set to Monitor Only (mute output), or it may not be assigned to the audio track used by the stream. Choose Monitoring Enabled when the source should reach both you and viewers, then verify its track assignment and test the YouTube preview.
  • Viewers hear the mic, but you do not. Check that the intended headphones or output are selected under Settings > Audio > Advanced > Monitoring Device, that the source is set to a mode that enables monitoring, and that the output device is connected and audible.
  • The sound echoes or doubles. OBS warns that capturing a device as a scene source while also selecting the same device globally under Settings > Audio can cause echo. Review both the global audio devices and scene sources, then remove the unintended duplicate capture route.
  • The meter moves, but the recording sounds wrong. A meter only indicates signal level. Listen to the OBS monitor feed and review a local recording to check the actual sound; adjust the relevant source or listening route based on what you hear.
  • Audio is missing from the YouTube preview or stream. Verify the source’s output mode and stream-track assignment, then repeat a representative test and check stream health in the Live Control Room.

Or let it run in the cloud

The OBS method keeps you in control of the setup, but a continuous broadcast from your computer depends on that computer, OBS, and your connection staying available. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
