In OBS, open the reconnect settings, enable Automatically Reconnect, then set Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. OBS increases the wait between retries by doubling it each time, so Retry Delay is not a promise of a fixed interval. There is no official universal best value: choose an initial delay and retry limit for the outages you want to tolerate, then check YouTube’s broadcast settings separately.
Set OBS to retry its YouTube connection
- In OBS, open the reconnect settings. The precise panel location can vary by OBS version; the current English interface labels are Automatically Reconnect, Retry Delay, and Maximum Retries. Turn on Automatically Reconnect.
- Enter a value for Retry Delay and choose a Maximum Retries count. OBS does not prescribe a universal setting for a YouTube playlist stream, so base these values on how long an interruption may last and how long you want OBS to keep trying.
- Do not interpret Retry Delay as the interval for every later attempt. OBS says the retry time doubles on each retry to avoid overloading services. A maximum retry count of zero disables reconnect attempts. OBS output reference
Check YouTube’s broadcast settings separately
OBS reconnect controls govern OBS’s attempts to restore its encoder connection. YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop are separate broadcast controls. YouTube says that when these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder. The stream key tells OBS where to send the feed so YouTube can accept it. For a scheduled broadcast that should resume
If OBS stops sending and your goal is to resume the scheduled broadcast, do not end the event, and review whether Auto-stop should be off. Verify the event after reconnecting
Once OBS has reconnected, confirm the broadcast is live in YouTube’s Live Control Room. An OBS retry does not guarantee that YouTube will keep the same event available, and the cited YouTube help does not specify a reconnect window or promise recovery after every outage.

Choose a retry policy for your outage risk
- Short interruptions: choose an initial delay and retry limit suited to brief drops, while remembering that subsequent retry waits increase.
- Longer outages: decide how long you want OBS to continue retrying and set the maximum accordingly. Do not assume OBS retries indefinitely; zero disables them.
- Scheduled events: decide whether YouTube’s Auto-stop behavior fits your intended recovery path before relying on OBS reconnect.
These are configuration decisions, not official recommended values. The cited OBS and YouTube documentation does not establish a single winning delay, retry count, or recovery duration for every outage or event state.
Common reconnect problems
- OBS makes no retry attempts: check that Automatically Reconnect is enabled and that Maximum Retries is not set to zero.
- Retries seem farther apart than the configured delay: OBS doubles retry time on each attempt, so later waits are longer than the initial setting.
- OBS reconnects but the scheduled YouTube broadcast does not continue: inspect the event’s Auto-stop setting and confirm the event remains available in Live Control Room. OBS’s guide warns that Auto-stop prevents continuing the broadcast after the encoder stops.
- The stream is connected but not live on YouTube: check the broadcast status in Live Control Room and confirm OBS is using the stream key associated with that broadcast.
