Netflix offers a profile maturity rating and title blocks; HBO Max combines Kids-profile ratings with a Parent Code and PINs for adult profiles; Disney+ offers profile ratings, Junior Mode, and profile-access controls. Ratings filter what is available on that profile, while a PIN or exit code helps prevent switching to a less-restricted one.
Menus can vary by device, app version, and country. The Netflix and HBO Max steps below come from their official help pages; Disney+ confirms the controls and supported management devices, but its current help page does not provide a verified click-by-click path here.
Before you start: restrict the profile your child uses
These services apply ratings limits to individual profiles, not uniformly to every profile on an account. A child could still reach less-restricted content by switching to an adult profile unless you protect that profile too. A profile PIN or exit code controls access; it does not replace the content rating limit.
- Choose the child’s existing profile or create a dedicated one.
- Set its rating limit, then use any available title-blocking option for individual exceptions.
- Protect adult profiles and profile switching wherever the service offers those controls.
How to set parental controls on Netflix
Use a browser to set the maturity rating
- Open the Netflix Account page in a browser.
- Select Profiles, then Adjust parental controls, and choose the child’s profile.
- Verify your identity with a code sent by email or mobile phone, or with the Netflix account password.
- Set the Maturity Rating and select Save.
Netflix says a profile’s maturity level limits the titles shown to those matching the selected level. Ratings are set by Netflix or a local standards organization and vary by region. For US viewers, the help page lists examples including TV-Y, TV-Y7, G, TV-G, PG, TV-PG, PG-13, TV-14, R, TV-MA, and NC-17; these labels should not be assumed to apply in other countries. Netflix displays ratings and content advisories on title detail pages. Use the Netflix app on a phone or tablet
- Tap My Netflix, then tap the profile name.
- Choose Manage Profiles, select the child’s profile, then tap Viewing Restrictions.
- Tap Maturity Rating, enter the account password when asked, and choose the desired rating.
Netflix requires a web browser to change the maturity rating of a Kids profile. You can also block specific shows or movies on an individual profile, which helps when a particular title is unsuitable even though its general rating is allowed.
How to set parental controls on HBO Max
Create a Kids profile and choose its ratings group
- Open the profile menu and choose + New Profile.
- Select an avatar or skip, then enter the child’s name.
- Turn on Kids Mode and choose a Ratings group. The US help page says the default is PG / TV-PG.
- Optionally turn on Kid-Proof Exit.
- Add the child’s birthdate and save.
The Kids profile’s ratings group limits what the child can watch and find through search; the home screen and search results show titles allowed by those settings. You can edit profiles through Manage Profiles on a phone, tablet, or computer, and the TV interface also has profile editing. Prevent switching to an adult profile
With Kid-Proof Exit enabled, leaving the Kids profile requires the four-digit Parent Code. Also add a Profile PIN to each adult profile your child could access. HBO Max may prompt for the Parent Code when someone leaves Kids mode; opening an adult profile protected by a Profile PIN requires that PIN.
HBO Max opens the last-used profile on a computer, phone, or tablet. On a TV, it opens the last-used Kids profile if one was used; if an adult profile was last used, it displays Who’s Watching. In a shared household, check which profile is active rather than assuming the app opens the child’s restricted profile.

How to set parental controls on Disney+
Disney+ lists these controls: Content ratings, Junior Mode, Profile PIN, Profile creation restriction, and Not Rated & Live Content. Its help materials say controls can be managed on a supported web browser or in the Disney+ mobile app, including while editing a profile. Open the profile you want to change and look for its profile-editing and parental-control settings; the exact current menu sequence is not established in the available Disney+ help page. A profile’s content rating hides titles above that level from browsing and search. Not Rated & Live Content can prevent the profile from viewing live content without an assigned rating. Junior Mode provides an interface featuring series and movies selected for younger viewers; it is distinct from setting a rating limit on a regular profile. Details: Disney+: Junior Mode.

Disney+ materials indicate that non-Junior profiles may default to a family-friendly rating. Check the active profile’s actual setting and adjust it to your household’s needs rather than relying on a default. Check the setup from the child’s point of view
- Confirm the correct profile is active and its chosen rating is saved.
- Search or browse for a title above the selected limit to check that it is filtered as expected.
- Check that the child cannot enter an unrestricted adult profile: use the Parent Code or adult-profile PINs on HBO Max, and the available profile safeguards on Disney+.
- Review a specific title separately when needed. On Netflix, use its individual-title block option; ratings alone may not address every household concern.
- If a menu is missing or named differently, consult the linked service help page for your country and device. Ratings and interface steps can vary by region, device, and app version.
