To restrict Grand Theft Auto VI, set a child’s family-account game restriction by age on PlayStation 5 or Xbox, then use a title-specific block or exception if the platform offers it for your account. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) currently lists the game as M (Mature 17+) in the United States for PS5 and Xbox Series. Its content descriptors include blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and use of drugs and alcohol; the entry also notes in-game purchases. Check the ESRB listing and your console’s displayed rating before setting a restriction. Ratings differ by region: the US PlayStation product page has said the rating was unconfirmed, so families outside the ESRB region should use their local rating label rather than assume the US category applies. See the US PlayStation listing.
Choose an age restriction or a game-specific block
An age-based restriction is the broad setting: it limits games according to the age level you choose for the child’s account. A title-specific control is narrower and may let you block or approve an individual game. Use a child account managed by your family group; an age filter may prevent access when the game’s rating is above the level allowed by that filter. Platform menus and available exceptions can change, so confirm the current options shown for the child’s account.
Playtime, online communication, user-generated content, and spending are separate family-control decisions. A game-rating restriction should not be treated as a setting for those other activities.
How to block GTA 6 on a child’s PS5
Set the child’s PS5 game age level
- Make sure the child has a child account in your PlayStation family. A family manager can set controls for child family members.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child, open Parental Controls, and choose an appropriate restriction level or customize it. Set the PS5 game age level to match the rating you want to allow.
- Alternatively, use the PlayStation Family app: select the child, open settings and Parental Controls, then choose the restriction level and PS5 game age level.
ESRB’s PS5 parental-controls guide documents these age-restriction routes. Menu labels can vary as PlayStation updates its software.

Consider a title-specific exception
If you want to make a decision about one game rather than change the child’s general age level, check the title’s rating and the current console controls. PlayStation Support describes game exceptions, but whether and how an exception is available depends on the account and current platform controls. Review the on-screen choices rather than assuming a particular override will work.
How to block GTA 6 on Xbox
Filter games by age in the Xbox Family Settings app
- Make sure the child is managed as a family member.
- In the Xbox Family Settings app, open Your Family and select the child.
- Open Content Restrictions, switch on Filter Inappropriate Content, then choose Allow Content Suitable for Age and confirm the child’s age.
These steps are from ESRB’s Xbox parental-controls guide, which covers Xbox One and later consoles as well as the app.

Allow or block one title
The Xbox Family Settings app also provides a title-level allow/block option. Use it if you want a decision for an individual game rather than changing the child’s general age filter. ESRB says children need parental confirmation for individually restricted games.
Use Xbox console settings instead
On the console, ESRB documents this route: Settings > Privacy and online safety, select the family member, then adjust Content restrictions. Menu names may vary by software version. The ESRB guide says Xbox restrictions apply to Xbox One and later consoles and Windows 10 devices; do not assume this coverage is identical to PlayStation’s.

Review the other controls separately
Once the game restriction is set, decide whether the household also needs limits for the following areas. Their settings are distinct from game age ratings:
- Communication and user-generated content: Choose what the child can access or share through online services.
- Playtime: Set any schedule or duration rules available in the family controls.
- Spending: Review purchasing permissions and spending limits, especially because the ESRB entry notes in-game purchases.
ESRB outlines these categories in its parental-controls overview; check the platform’s current family settings for the controls available to your account.

Check the rating and settings again when the game is available
Ratings are regional, and the available title-specific options or menu names may change. Before making a decision, check the game’s on-screen rating and the relevant local ratings authority, then confirm that the child’s family settings still reflect your choice. The ESRB listing is the basis for the US M (Mature 17+) category; the US PlayStation page’s unconfirmed-rating statement does not establish a rating for other regions.
