For a conventional landscape YouTube livestream, build the animation and encoder canvas at 16:9. A common full-HD setting is 1920×1080; 1280×720 is a lower-resolution 16:9 option. Keep pixels square, avoid adding black bars to force a shape, and check the Live Control Room preview before leaving the stream unattended. YouTube’s guidance is general live-stream advice, not a separate rule for 24/7 animation.
Choose the frame shape for the way viewers will watch
For the usual horizontal viewing experience, use 16:9. YouTube recommends this ratio for live-stream video quality, and calls it the standard aspect ratio for YouTube on a computer. See Manage live stream settings and Video resolution & aspect ratios.
A 24/7 animated stream does not have a special aspect-ratio requirement in YouTube’s published guidance. Treat 16:9 as the sensible default for a standard horizontal stream, rather than a rule unique to continuous animation.
Pick a matching 16:9 resolution
YouTube lists these resolutions for its default 16:9 ratio:

These are examples in YouTube’s resolution guidance, not a requirement to use one particular size. Higher resolution can preserve more visual detail, but the encoder and network also have to deliver it reliably. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations vary with resolution and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that suits every stream. Consult YouTube’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance and live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the relevant settings.
Set up the animation and encoder
- Design the composition. Set the animation canvas to 16:9 for a landscape stream, and place essential artwork and text comfortably inside the frame.
- Choose the frame dimensions. Select a 16:9 size such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720, based on visual detail and the upload capacity you can sustain.
- Match the encoder output. Set the encoder to the same frame dimensions as the animation. YouTube’s advanced live encoder guidance lists square pixels; pixel shape is a separate setting from the frame’s 16:9 shape.
- Keep the picture clean. Do not bake black bars into the animation to make it fill a 16:9 file. YouTube’s player adapts to the video’s shape and viewing device; padding can interfere with that dynamic adaptation.
- Test before leaving it running. Check the Live Control Room preview for the intended framing and cropping, confirm the stream is receiving the expected frame, and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing before going live. Choose a bitrate suitable for the selected resolution and frame rate, and for reliable upload capacity.
YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into different output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. That does not remove the need to send a correctly composed, stable source stream.

When vertical 9:16 makes sense
Vertical is a separate composition decision, not a substitute setting for a landscape animation. YouTube Live Control Room supports horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 formats. Its default vertical treatment can center-crop a horizontal stream, which may cut off characters, interface elements, captions, or other details near the sides. You can choose other vertical layouts in Live Control Room; inspect the result before relying on it. See Get started with live streaming.
- Keep 16:9 if the full width of the animation matters and most viewers should see the landscape composition.
- Use a dedicated vertical composition if important elements need to remain visible in 9:16.
- Test the actual vertical presentation, especially if using a center crop; do not assume a wide frame will survive cropping intact.
